My DH and I have started going to the theatre Saturday matinees more regularly now our kids are older teens and we can leave them home alone on Saturday afternoons!!

We have booked Dracula so far as Australian friends have raved about it but wondering what else is coming out that people are excited about?

Saw Standard of Living at Haymarket.. Rory Kinnear was excellent but wasn’t sure about the play as a whole. Got tickets for Golden Boy at the Almeida coming up..

We've whisked this away as it was posted in the wrong topic. No threads were harmed in the move. MNHQ.

I saw The Children courtesy of cheap ticket codes on the last day of the run. It was excellent and the tickets were a bargain - I was surprised to get them at the end of the run.

The Story next, I'm really looking forward to it. Reviews have been mixed but personal recommendations have been good. Fingers crossed.

I saw The Story a couple of weeks ago. First half was excellent but I got rather lost in the second half - just too much going on and the staging was confusing

Confusing and problematic staging seems to have been a theme of a number of NT productions this year. No idea if they are experimenting with new ideas but whatever it is, it is not working (well not for me).

I'm seeing the play later this week so will prepare to concentrate hard!

Do let me know what you think. I hope it’s not just me who found it confusing!

I loved The Children! £10 tickets was a bargain. Fences is getting rave reviews at the Lyric too, I might try and squeeze it in
I also really liked The Story though the ending was a little muddled and it was a bit shouty.

Some Woman is our next at the Dorfman, looking forward to that

I love James Graham so I'm really looking forward to this. What was it about the play you weren't keen on? (If you can give it away without spoiling it!)

@C8H10N4O2 a new director took over at the National last year so think she's trying to make mark.. The first play I saw under her reign was The Bacchae which I enjoyed (and know quite well as a classicist) but definitely not for traditionalists (or the MN feminist brigade).

@KingscoteStaff that actually makes sense that it was written first. I thought some of the satire was a bit obvious in a way that I didn't with 1536. But yes, very different takes on Clytemnestra.

Do you think its her direction or another contributor to the staging and design? I had only seen a couple of her productions before she took up this role - way back in Tricycle days - but I enjoyed them and don't recall feeling the staging was messy or confusing in the way I've felt a few times this year.

I just saw Standard of Living at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket. I enjoyed it.

I've got Rent booked for later this year which I am really looking forward to. Oh and Panto of course!

It just seemed a bit flat to start with.. but did get better in the second half. Am sure you’ll enjoy it!

Saw the Dogman musical, very entertaining and a couple of surprisingly good voices in the lead cast. Seeing the Hamlet / Radiohead mash up next month and just booked for the Great Gatsby ballet next year so excited!!
