I love Mika. I think he sings that song 'Why Don't You Like Me'. He's like a mixture between Robbie Williams and Freddie Mercury. He commands several octaves with precision and feeling, yet remaining cool.

Spidermama · 01/02/2007 23:48

Marc Almond? OMG you have to be joking. He's the worst singer of the eighties IMO. I like the guy but he couldn;t sing a note.

CntingSainsburys · 02/02/2007 00:56

Jeff Buckley
Nick Drake
Carole King
Aretha
Kathryn Williams

honky nico hehehe

her story is quite sad isn't it

neil young?

Marina · 02/02/2007 09:20

ooerr, SEA, he is in my subcategory of people who can write wonderfully, but maybe not do justice to their songwriting...I have to be in the right mood to listen to Neil...
along with Bob Dylan and Billy Bragg.

But other people doing his songs, oh yes pruni.
Dh has decided he has rediscovered Dylan after the interminable No Way Home was shown last year on BBC4. I am keeping good divorce lawyers' numbers on speed dial...

Marina · 02/02/2007 09:31

So I am a philistine too but I think I'd like to poke Bob's eyes out.

MrsJohnCusack · 02/02/2007 09:35

I am forced to listen to Bob Dylan a lot here, whining on
the only reason he is slightly bearably is that ANYTHING is better than when DH is in a Genesis mood. Which he is at the moment - really helping my mood.
Or Neil Young, which we get quite a lot too.

great songwriters (except fecking Genesis), but not great singers IMO

hannahsaunt · 02/02/2007 09:37

Bob is a dream to listen to when the alternative is Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam)...actually when he's feeling so inclined, Bob can be fab live but it's quite hit or miss.

Now Leonard Cohen on the other hand...could listen to him all day

southeastastra · 02/02/2007 09:37

yes know what you mean about neil young.

mamas and papas? that bloke in mcalmont and butler (was it mcalmont?)

ludaloo · 02/02/2007 09:39

Not that I'm particularly a Fan, but Mick Hucknall really can sing. I always think a good singer is someone who sounds as good singing live as they do on their albums...and he really does.

Eva Cassidy does too

choosyfloosy · 02/02/2007 09:40

no no no NO paul simon really really really can sing, listen to 'american tune' or any of 'still crazy...' and you won't tell me otherwise

i'll tell you who really can't sing and that's Al Stewart [tumbleweed]

an awful lot of pop singers have very constrained voices IMO, like Freddy Mercury, they get stuck into their own vocal tics too much. imo stevie wonder is a bit guilty of this, but of course he's a genius singer - i remember 'lives of the great songs' describing 'sunshine of my life' as 'the standard nobody else can sing'. and listening to early michael jackson now is just tragic, his voice is so lovely to listen to before he started fiddling with it.

roger daltrey can sing
and bruce dickinson from iron maiden
and paul weller, yes
and sophie ellis-bextor
and paul mccartney

and emma kirkby - and bryn terfel - and...

hannahsaunt · 02/02/2007 09:41

Actually, I don't think voices come better than Eva Cassidy - her Songbird album sends shivers down my spine every time, it's just so beautiful.

Have to also confess to loving listening Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson (maybe that's a childhood thing though) and Louis Armstrong.

MrsJohnCusack · 02/02/2007 09:55

AH HA another vote for my beloved Roger Daltrey

Marina am only steering clear of classical/opera because I would bore on for hours. that's the reason I didn't put Ella Fitzgerald - I kind of feel she is ABOVE discussion. We have the complete Songbooks (DH bought for about £2 at his old job ) and they are just so amazing. (Makes it even harder to be subjected to Genesis).

Nina Simone was on my mind as I've also been listening to the 'Best of' collection a lot recently - it is pure genius. It is on my Ipod for my labour selection

ludaloo · 02/02/2007 09:55

I have her album in the car...its very relaxing to drive to.

Sting is my all time favorite. I'm not sure whether I would say he really can sing...his voice isn't that brilliant live IMO but he is a genius song writer and I have pretty much every album...including the Police...I love him!

noddyholder · 02/02/2007 09:59

Paul weller
Liam Gallagher

Damon Albarn

harpsichordcarrier · 02/02/2007 10:03
