Yes Sally. He was approaching retirement and had given up good manners for utter selfishness. Left me with a hatred of Jazz.

hunkeydorey · 01/02/2007 22:09

Freddy Mercury. My kids are totally into Queen at the moment and dd2 has become his biggest fan!

Mercy · 01/02/2007 22:10

lol 2nerves!

No, definitely not that sort of thing. This is slow, melodic, type stuff. More in the Frank camp, certainly not impro.

Mercy · 01/02/2007 22:16

What about Barry Manilow?

frumpygrumpy · 01/02/2007 22:29

Barry Manilow is a singer?

emsiewill · 01/02/2007 22:52

Can't believe no-one has mentioned George Michael (well only in relation to his opinion of Queen songs anyway). I saw him in concert last year, and was blown away by how good a singer he is. It had been so long since I'd last seen him live that I'd forgotten.

Carly Simon - but wouldn't admit that in real life

frumpygrumpy · 01/02/2007 23:04

I hate this phrase. But. What's your point caller?

Gingerbear · 01/02/2007 23:05

Al Green
Seal
kd lang
George Michael
Matraca Berg

theheadgirl · 01/02/2007 23:07

Am agreeing with most of SallyStrawberry and Califrau's suggestion, but at the risk of being lynched......I just dont get Elvis. I know he's a legend and stuff, but I don't get it. All you fans, tell me songs of his that might change my mind???
My list:
Tracey Thorn
Eva Cassidy
Aretha
Luther Vandross
Stevie Wonder
George michael
Beverley Knight - no one's mentioned her yet
Kirsty Maccoll
Alison Krauss
Dolly Parton
elton John
Karen Carpenter.

Freckle · 01/02/2007 23:13

Matt Munro
Justin Hayward
Rick Astley (voice not songs!)
Norah Jones

Well, it's all subjective isn't it?

Headgirl - Don't know that this is a good representation of Elvis' voice but I can't listen to 'In the Ghetto' without a tear. I seriously have to turn it off whenever anyone else is around because I look like a loon weeping away.

Stiller · 01/02/2007 23:20

I agree about Elvis. I think he's pure cheese.

Most of my favourites have been mentioned already but clearly baritones only press my buttons...Neil Hannon, Lloyd Cole, anyone?
Annie Lennox has a beautiful agile voice, and I love Nina Simone too MrsJC
I know you said steer clear of the classics but I could listen to Dawn Upshaw, Kathleen Ferrier or Juan Diego Florez all day.

Marina · 01/02/2007 23:33

Oh, and Martin Fry in his ABC heyday...cracking falsetto

theheadgirl · 01/02/2007 23:38

Oooh marina, yes, Neil Hannon!
