I've seen Joan Baez in concert 3 times. Each one seemed better than the last.

Ditto Dolly Parton, who is also an amazing songwriter and plays musical instruments as well.

My other vote, The Indigo Girls.

And Barbra S, sally

It's really hard to do this when you haven't heard someone for a long time, isn't it?

I might have missed her on the list, but Bjork.

Mercy · 01/02/2007 21:29

ok, haven't read the thread but here are a few people from my early days I would like to nominate

Frank Sinatra
Chet Baker
Elvis Presley
Mahalia Jackson
Dusty Springfield
Brian Wilson
Carole King

Will have to think about later ones.

Love this thread btw!

When I asked dp he said Bjork!

JanH · 01/02/2007 21:30

Oh yes to Brian Wilson (if he did most of the singing?)

lucykate · 01/02/2007 21:31

pruni, i agree that now, he does sort of grunt and growl , but his voice is pretty knackered, U2 have been on the go for years, since they were about 15. if you listen to their earlier stuff, his voice is alot better.

Lio · 01/02/2007 21:31

OH yes deffo Bjork, such an individual, could listen to whatever her first album is called over and over and over... interspersed with Kathleen Battle and Karen Carpenter, of course.

2nervesleft · 01/02/2007 21:32

For the men I love both Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.
I don't like singers who do vocal gymnastics and appear to be in pain to reach the notes. Much prefer old Frank who seemed to just open his mouth and out it came.

Yah for Eva Cassidy. Beautiful emotion in her voice, and Karen Carpenter. What is it about these tragic women?

frumpygrumpy · 01/02/2007 21:33

Ray Lamontagne - a god

Paulo Nutini - a god and YES I fancy the 20 year old pants off him and I'd like to share everything I know about sex with him AND he has an amazing voice AND his dad owns a chippy.

Mick Hucknall

Alison Moyet for me too

James Morrison

Leona has a great voice but shit music for me so far......

Michael Hutchence - a loss, gritty and raw

Ol Frankie boy still manages it for me too

Leonard Cohen's voice is up for debate, but personally I love it.

MrsJohnCusack · 01/02/2007 21:34

and how could I forget my beloved Kirsty MacColl

am still not going to start on the ones I don't like from here, it's a full moon and one must be careful...

lucykate · 01/02/2007 21:34

what about chrissie hynde?, i've always been a bit undecided about her voice

frumpygrumpy · 01/02/2007 21:34

love Chrissie Hynde's voice
