Very, very sad news. He will be missed.
Thinking of his family, friends and all who knew and loved him.
May he rest in peace.

JugBouquet · 29/07/2026 16:01

Yes, DH rang me this morning! I’m taken aback at how saddened I am. I only saw him live once, in The Swell Season, ages ago.

And I went into my teenager’s room to say he’s never allowed to get a motorbike.

WaveyGodshawk · 29/07/2026 16:03

It's just so shocking isn't it, I can't take it in. His poor wife, child and family, friends.
RIP Glen, the world will be a dimmer place without you.

SummerNocturnal · 29/07/2026 16:14

Yes, I just read that. Motorbike accident. Utterly tragic. RIP Glen 💐

LlynTegid · 29/07/2026 16:17

Very sad and thoughts for his family. I remember him singing at the memorial to Shane MacGowan.

Twattergy · 29/07/2026 16:18

Im extremely sad. Saw him live last year and was struck by how full of creative energy he was. Immense raw musicianship. He performed a most moving song written for his baby son. He was an exceptional musician. Once is a masterpiece. A huge loss.

YoungSoak · 29/07/2026 16:22

Very sad news, he was a great talent and seemed like a decent person. His son is only 3 or 4. His poor family must be devastated

deeahgwitch · 29/07/2026 16:27

So sad.
Suaimhneas síoraí dá anam.

Kirys · 29/07/2026 17:59

Absolutely shocked and devastated. Loved every different dimension of this warm, genius, passionate, generous and talented man from The Commitments, to The Swell Season, to The Camino Voyage. 💔

Fond memories of him in The Commitments. Didn't really appeal to me personally musically . Hearing so many positive stories about him . Seems to have been just a really nice guy . Great musician and mentor to other musicians. Very hard for wife and child . Especially tragic when he died due to an accident at such a young age .

Sakura7 · 29/07/2026 18:20

Very sad for his family. I enjoyed his music back in the day.

However, he's another disappointing male celebrity. At best a creep, at worst a groomer, as many people involved in the Dublin music scene back then would tell you.

Yeah, have seen a few comments about this. His relationship with Markéta always felt off although they do seem to have remained friends and colleagues long after the relationship ended.

Having said that I was shocked and sad to hear the news this morning. And his son is so young.

waffleyversatile1 · 29/07/2026 18:40

This is so sad. Song of good hope is one of my favourites. Thoughts with his family and friends x

RIP Glen Hansard 💔 such sad news - huge fan of The Frames.

They met when she was 13 and he was 31. She apparently used to write him love letters. He was quoted as saying:

"I had been falling in love with her for a long time, but I kept telling myself she's just a kid."

Then funnily enough they get together once she's old enough.

Teaforthetotal · 29/07/2026 19:12

RIP ,I'm listening back to my favourite Frames tracks now and thinking of the 'old' days. Used to listen to them and go to their gigs with my first boyfriend. It was happy, simpler times.
Sadly I did go off him after the Marketa thing . I find it worse now than I did at the time, .as I'm around the age he was when he got with her
He undoubtedly left a major stamp on Irish music though and I'm sad for his loved ones.

RoniaCheetah · 29/07/2026 19:16

I've been so sad about this today.

I used to know him a bit back into the day and some of his family are still friends of mine. I've seen him live more times than I can count between Frames gigs, solo gigs and singer songwriter nights around Dublin in the 90s. He was an absolute gent. Such a kind and genuine man.

Ireland has lost a real legend but the clips and memories everyone has been sharing today have been really beautiful.

Feel awful for his family, wife and 3 year old son.

Teaforthetotal · 29/07/2026 19:19

@RoniaCheetah that is lovely to hear that he was nice irl.
One of my favourites is a version of Rainy Night in Soho he did on a Late Late tribute to Shane McGowan a few year's ago.

donthaveaname · 29/07/2026 22:02

Saw him so many times live and was always left with the impression that the words he wrote were so very personal and the endless energy he gave to his performances reflected the intense personal nature of those words!

loved the little stories he told between songs 🥰

this is one of my favourites…

I listened to him and Declan O'Rourke singing Raglan Road last week in tribute to Luke Kelly. It's absolutely beautiful.

I can't believe it. His poor family.

Rest in peace Glen Hansard💐

Fupoffyagrasshole · 29/07/2026 23:40

god this is so sad I was thinking about him all day

and he has a little boy too - saw an interview with him a few years ago about how happy he was being a dad :(

myself and my sister ran into him in jfk years ago delayed flight and we were on same flight and we went to say hello and god he was so friendly and talked to us for absolutely ages !!! Such a genuine nice guy!

Dontlletmedownbruce · 30/07/2026 19:39

I am surprised by how sad I am. I'm not a huge fan but I went through a Frames phase once upon a time. I can't keep thinking about that little kid and how we must have kept thinking one day he would teach him to play and share his passion for music and now that's been snatched away. Life can be so so cruel.

The funeral arrangements have been announced

It's being livestreamed and shown on RTE. I expect it to be an amazing celebration, full of music, from St Patrick's cathedral. Much like Shane McGowan 's was.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm in the UK otherwise I would have liked to pay my respects in some way.
I'm still in shock at the news but the tributes have been so fulsome and far reaching, it has been comforting to see.

He was a pedophile. Regardless of talent.
