That's very scary re psychology. My child is hoping to study that. I did an MA through Womens Studies in UCD many moons ago. It's Gender Studies now and my former head of dept has been completely captured.

I know. It's scary.

That said, I'm not au fait with the situation in all universities but I work in one and the dc have attended two so I'd say pretty representative.

I came across this info on TwiX yesterday and thought it would be of interest to folks on this thread. It feels like this proposal is similar to legislation that exists in Australia and that has been used successfully to silence and punish people espousing gender critical views:

https://gript.ie/irish-politicians-want-to-fight-true-but-harmful-info/

"The Irish Government has said it intends to target so-called “mal-information” — information that is factually true, but deemed “harmful” — as part of its new National Counter Disinformation Strategy.

This week, Communications Minister Patrick O’Donovan defended the move in an exchange with Gript, insisting that the Government must ensure citizens have access to what it considers “trusted sources” of news.

“I think within the world that we live in at the moment, it is important that the public, the citizens have access to information that they know is from a trusted source,” he said, adding that too much of what circulates online amounts to mere “gossip.”
The National Disinformation Strategy, published in April, was preceded by a public consultation in 2023. Of the 470 submissions received, 83% opposed the plan outright, with many respondents warning of censorship and threats to free speech. Only 11% supported the proposals — many of these from state-funded bodies, NGOs, and government departments. Despite this overwhelming opposition, the Government pressed ahead."

That is outrageous. Don't tell the truth in case it makes people think. There are a lot of respectable people in Ireland who have exactly the same mindset that 70 years ago prevented advertising tampons, 40 years ago prevented giving information on abortion. Keep the proletariat away from anything that might let them form independent ideas. The taboos have changed, the commitment to narrow-mindedness survives intact and triumphant.

I hope the presidential candidates get asked about it - those debates may be the only chance of getting some things aired.

UtopiaPlanitia · 15/09/2025 03:02

Your examples are excellent. The paternalistic attitude of Irish govt and media class towards their fellow citizens is extreme.

Sometimes, I half-seriously wonder if their dislike of an informed citizenry was the reason for the ridiculously slow development of decent internet infrastructure in Ireland 🤔

DeanElderberry · 15/09/2025 07:55

that motto has said it all for centuries

Obedientia Civium Urbis Felicitas

and where Dublin leads, the rest of us have to follow

Indie Cork is closing for good after this year's festival. It is a celebration of Cork film and music. One of the founding members died last year. But it has also been hit by a wave of withdrawals after another founder tweeted I Stand With JKR.

It is all very sad but the Arts in general seems to be terrified of this lobby.

OP posts:
Abhannmor · 17/09/2025 09:28

Oh dear. I know Rhys is a comedian of sorts and it's hard to know how much is just shite talk . Bit unwise in the present atmosphere. Good job we have actual free speech here. Americans blather on about it but are routinely murdered for having the wrong views , both left and right.

As for the Cork thing...you'd wonder how much of it is down to personal animus / ambition. I binned Twitter and Reddit years ago - thank the Goddess - so am not up to speed.

"I stand with JK Rowling" is offensive hate that makes people unsafe.

On the other hand, they seem to think this is perfectly fine.

Thanks for sharing that, I wasn't aware of it and I've often seen him around my city centre. I'm disgusted that my city council are supporting him.

Inasmuch as we're less likely to be murdered generally speaking. The fashion clown guy would need 24 Hr security in the USA. So would GC people.....

DeanElderberry · 17/09/2025 12:33

But we don't have the constitutional right to free speech that the USA has.

In practice we are not, I think, as restricted as the UK with its D/DSMA-Notice system, but there is a lot we 'can't' talk about - think of the decades where no-one from a known republican group could be broadcast. And the big silence around gender seems pretty coordinated.

I think we often imagine we have a right to free speech because we hear it talked about by Americans, but we don't.

Abhannmor · 17/09/2025 13:30

American talk about free speech is just that . Quoting Charlie Kirk's own words will get you in deep shit. He himself was big into cancelling people. And he had 9m followers.
That's the trouble with extremists of all stripes. They hate free speech really but love their own right to hate speech. Wait til they get a sniff of power though....

Well this nasty individual with his talk shit get hit is getting a taste of his own medicine and he's now a target in the city, so much so that his home address has been posted on social media.

Hundreds of posts slating him so he'll probably use them to make himself the victim. If I was him or his family I'd be very worried for his safety.

He is a very stupid man and possibly mentally unwell? I don't approve of targeting peoples homes. Although he'd stand out a mile anyway?

I wonder , if you wind the clock forward 20 years , will half these people be on the far right / born again / loony bin. Or just happy well adjusted gay people?

It’s likely those of us on here are already well informed but this article by a fellow Irish woman is worth the read if only to remind us of the bigger picture and that events in the U.S are a just a distraction from the real source of the stranglehold of this tyranny in Ireland.

God that is shocking and depressing in equal measure , even if you know some of the background.

It's been said before in here but there will be lawsuits and no doubt yet another Tribunal. Has to happen - and let noone quibble over the cost.

The trans movement seem to be very comfortable with violence. Hang terfs, stab your local terf, no terf deserves teeth, death threats, threats of elaborately-detailed rape scenarios... not to mention actual violence against women.

The website TERF is a slur | Documenting the abuse, harassment and misogyny of transgender identity politics has examples,, but approach it with caution, the examples given are extremely violent and often very graphic.

TRAs get away with levels of violent speech, threats of violence, and actual violence against women that I can't imagine being tolerated from any other group.

It didn't entirely surprise me that the murder of CK would be welcomed enthusiastically by members of the trans community, but I have been surprised that they are so upfront about not just condoning, but celebrating the killing of CK. Gloating, even.

Have the usually vocal representatives of the trans community in Ireland come out and condemned Rhys Wallace's words? Is he going to be challenged by his peers? Are they going to distance themselves from him? 'Not in our name'?

DeanElderberry · 23/09/2025 09:59

The illusion fantasy people have accepted shunning and collective violence as a way to control realists. They are fascist.

https://dublinfestivalofhistory.ie/event/stalling-civil-rights-the-illiberal-origins-of-the-anti-trans-backlash/

I can't believe this is the output from UCD now. I did a master's in women's studies back in the day. Our former director is one of the most vocal hand maidens now.

That reads like a ChatGPT mishmash of groundless trans nonsense about what GC is really about. It even contains the trademark 'trans folk' and 'bathroom' instead of toilet🙄

What's striking about it is that it reflects the trans obsession with toilets. Where they want to pee. Why they should be allowed pee in the women's toilet. Where they are going to pee if we don't let them pee in the women's toilets. Why the UK Supreme Court are transphobic bigots for not legislating to allow the to pee in the women's toilets. (overlooking the fact that the SC only clarified existing law AND the case was about representation on boards, not about toilets.)

Dr Frank follows the TRA guidebook to the letter, and goes straight to the subject of sexual assaults in toilets. Bang, right there in the first sentence, under a huge photo of a toilet.

Nothing about the erasure women's rights in all the areas of society which do not take place in toilets.

Sometimes I wonder what the T in LGBT really stands for...😏

Irish, gender critical YouTuber Jack Jewell posted regarding the murder of Charlie Kirk and I thought he made some interesting points in his videos:
