Seriously? A party whose raison-detre is Anti-abortion?

Opposing the destruction of human life is a political position I support. I don’t believe abortion is a good thing for women.

PoolQuandry · 04/09/2024 22:41

Unless you care about bodily autonomy for women of course. Because he certainly doesn't.

I care about human life being destroyed.
I don’t believe abortion has been good for women. I’m sure it’s been “good” for plenty of feckless men though.

Am I the only one (expat, dc in British schools) amazed that this was junior cert material? Apart from any of the offensive stereotyping, it's just so babyish. It looks like it was produced for 7 - 9 year olds maximum.

Aranknickers · 05/09/2024 09:32

For leaving cert there is also a section on "white Irish privilege" in another book which is also to be removed.

How much is this actually costing us taxpayers?!

Abhannmor · 05/09/2024 09:52

Aranknickers · 04/09/2024 21:02

Funnily enough this activity wasn't included in the Irish language version of the book. Wonder why that was?

That is quite discriminatory in itself imo. It implies that English speaking Irish ppl are inbred retards while Gaeilgeoirí are not. This seems a bit counterintuitive on the face of it. I can only assume they didn't to offend teachers of Irish? Foley might be transferred to the Blaskets and forced to read Peig without Google Translate 😱.
Oddly enough @AgileGreenSeal black and brown skinned ppl look great in those old Clancy bros Aran sweaters. They don't suit us half so well. Unless you take a tan?

& self id. Ang man that says he’s a woman is a woman. Ireland is often quoted internationally as a shining example of where there are no reports of a single problem with self id

There are myriad problems with self ID here of course. But a lie can be half way round the world while the truth is putting its boots on as Churchill said. And he should know , lying old get.

MarieDeGournay · 05/09/2024 10:08

Who in the name of all that's holy wrote that?? I'd really love to know who they are and where their heads are at. Seriously, I think they should be identified and made to explain how on earth they thought that was appropriate.

And then who OKed it for publication. And then all the people who say it and didn't say 'Whoa!'. In short, WTF?

I briefly wondered it it was being used to reveal what it's like to be at the receiving end of prejudice -

'How would you like it if the Irish were portrayed in this insulting way? Not good, eh? You'd start complaining about discrimination immediately, wouldn't you? So don't treat other groups in insulting and prejudiced ways.'

but no, it look like it wasn't that subtle - just shocking.

Irish people are not insular, angry, petty, xenophobic and racist...what an accusation. How dare they. We are openminded, tolerant, welcoming, and completely respectful towards all groups, regardless of who they are, where they come from, what they look like or what religion they are. ...
Aren't we?

Abhannmor · 05/09/2024 10:54

I like to think so @MarieDeGournay . In my town - it would be classed as a hamlet in England - there are 200 asylum seekers. Creaking at the seams since the Ukraine war started but still no problems 🤞. To say nothing of legal migration from the EU and lest we forget , the UK. Mass attendance is very high. Yet equal marriage was carried by a large majority as was Repeal. Being a GAA fan and being tolerant and broadminded are not mutually exclusive. Same goes for music, literature and Irish language. Catholic means universal of course and worship was formerly conducted in a foreign language - gasp- Latin.
No doubt there are some people out there who haven't come to terms with the Viking raids. Yet I'm continually amazed at how well we have coped tbh , from a standing start around 2000 , our rate of immigration is higher than that of the UK. I pray that we don't end up with their problems. But these utter wankers at Education are not making things any easier.

Just to add a confession : I own not one but two Aran sweaters. My adult kids wear them too. But they are all dark green / blue. Does this lessen the offence ? 😂

Snap love an aran just bought another!! Also me and my son have red hair. Guess we're just intrinsically bad!!

Same here and furthermore, at the rate thngs are going soon we won't have any real rights left at all. Sure how could we when the powers-that-be pretend they can't even dfine what a woman actually is, other than some waffle about self-identity?
Regarding the outrageous anti-Irish bigotry, and I would say, racism in that book, I am not surprised, only disgusted and angry. I was born and reared in England in the 60s and 70s; I experienced what some might reagrd as mild anti-Irish attitudes, usually from people who didn't realise I am of Irish ethnicity, but some of them did and expressed it in a covert way, but the way some Irish people here in Ireland, and particularly MSMs, politicians and the woke crowd seem to despise their own people, culture, language and ethnicity horrifies me! In fact, it'd be much harder to find an English person who is as anti-Irish as the aforementioned these days, as loads of English people actually like the Irish now. They certainly seem to like them more than the likes of whoever wrote that pile of hateful shite!

Sunlightinclouds · 05/09/2024 15:00

I am glad Edco have bowed to pressure and agreed to remove this from the books, but I don't understand how it got there in the first place. Edco are the publishers but surely they don't set the curriculum or write the text? Does nobody in the Department of Education check on this content?
The 'White Irish Privilege' content in the Leaving Cert SPHE book was withdrawn after objections during public consultation, which suggests that the Department of Education are involved in signing off on the content. So why are Edco the only ones doing a mea culpa?

Aranknickers · 05/09/2024 15:31

https://gript.ie/white-irish-privilege-references-removed-from-sphe-curriculum/

A different school book aimed at leaving cert with the brainwashing of "white Irish privilege"..

Abhannmor · 05/09/2024 15:41

Same here @Sunlightinclouds . Some drone commissioned this drivel and nobody checked it I'm guessing. Outsourcing means never having to say you're sorry.

halava · 05/09/2024 15:52

Get them brainwashed when they're young.... and hope no one else notices.

Ah but this isn’t ordinary despising & deriding out culture this is Irish despising our culture.

At one time we had to be the best Catholics in the world now we have to be the woke at little island in the world.

Agree. Same smugness and same tendency to cling to orthodoxy.

Yes, i would be interested to hear more about who wrote this, how it came about and who approved. The Department of Ed shouldn't be allowed to wash their hands just because they hand over their curriculum to be rewritten by activists. The same seems to have happened with gender and I'm glad this is getting attention

EternallyConfused100 · 05/09/2024 19:23

This is very accurate

Imagine the national and international media if it had been a stereotyped representation of people who don't suffer from "white irish privilege"

For the first and probably the last time I found myself agreeing with Aontu

We are a family involved in GAA, my DD plays the fiddle and my youngest is into Irish dancing. They all go to a Gaelscoil. We also welcome immigration in Ireland which has been a good thing (and eat pizza) Irish people are generally outward looking and we've also worked hard to revive our traditions.

This is not representative of any family that I know. This is not what the racists look like!

That's your belief. Just because you believe it, it doesn't make it true.

I am a woman. My body belongs to me and me alone. I am fortunate enough to live in a time where accidental pregnancy doesn't mean lifelong ties to feckless men. Or serious health problems. I don't want to go back to a time when women had to book the boat in secret or endanger their lives.

You can't ban abortion @AgileGreenSeal. You can just ban safe abortion practices, which is a massive threat to women.

Abhannmor · 06/09/2024 09:54

This thread has triggered a memory. I was in Tralee general hospital seeing a consultant from India. He mentioned that he had also lived in Germany and Britain but said Ireland has the best quality of life. Only one caveat in his opinion - ' The government spends too much money in Dublin. They treat us as ignorant culchies!'

How's that for integration? I wonder what he'd make of this rubbish.

Yeah it's just another religion. But one with forgiveness , compassion or redemption. Express the wrong opinions and you'll never work again. Even the Pope can't do that. Look at Graham Linehan. Rightly praised for his surreal send up of religion. Says women and children need privacy , dignity and safety : banished from polite society.

Yes, that's exactly it! The dogma, craw thumping, virtue signalling, fake compassion and bullying. The ironic part of it is that these bullies pretend to be so brave now in standing up to the catholic church when the church has lost its power but are happy to let the new men in dresses walk all over women and children

What "bullies" are you talking about?

DeanElderberry · 07/09/2024 11:46

All four members of family A look very similar - in a rather striking and unusual way. Is there a suggestion that we rural dwellers are not just dictatorial potato-eating GAA bigots, but incestuous dictatorial potato-eating GAA bigots?

JaneJeffer · 07/09/2024 11:57

Family B are no oil paintings either Grin
