I think SF would be a complete disaster but credit to Michelle O Neill in N.I for following the Cass report recommendations.. All we're left with is Aontú, Independents & the Nationalist parties..

Aontú for me.

I saw a funny comment on X. Family A with their Aran Sweaters to keep warm and taking holidays in Ireland would be a model family from a Green/ save the planet perspective. Family B are clocking up the air miles and the food miles !

That’s class 🤣

Same. They have announced they will repeal the Gender Recognition Act, also very clued in regarding education .. Peadar Toibín has common sense & is excellent in any debate
Independent Ireland appeared good but now are known as a light version of FFFG..

Peadar Tóibín is that rarest of creatures- a politician you could actually vote for without feeling unclean.

It's like it's meant to be a joke. I know a Swiss man and a German woman who play Irish music, other countries appreciate our culture even if some book authors do not. Ridiculous. As for this hatred of the Irish language, that's just nonsense. It can be very poorly taught by teachers that don't have a good grasp on it in primary school and those kids are lost when they get to secondary and encounter teachers who did it at university because they were good at it and then don't understand how kids come in not able to put a sentence together. And the kids then think it's too hard and pointless. I think it might not be a bad idea to scrap primary Irish or alternatively start as if completely from the beginning in secondary, the same as is done for foreign languages. Maybe kids wouldn't end up hating it then. Rant over I suppose...

My hubby thought the book was also stoking the flames by referring to us as a nation of pork eaters with the bacon & cabbage .. Why use pork? Are they trying to shame children even further in multicultural classrooms who may have children who are against pork for religious & cultural reasons?

VaddaABeetch · 04/09/2024 21:36

Ah but this isn’t ordinary despising & deriding out culture this is Irish despising our culture.

At one time we had to be the best Catholics in the world now we have to be the woke at little island in the world.

But the pork comes from the pigs roaming the kitchen?

Well spotted, that man.

As an immigrant to Ireland I find this deeply offensive and wildly inaccurate.

I feel like a racist Irish family would look very different.

A real Irish family supports Man United and has first cousins in Boston and Sydney.

You can be a proud Irish person and welcome diversity. Its not that hard.

Sure, we’re all over the world!
One of our most well known characteristics is how every place on the planet has its emigrant Irish contingent.
I was born in Sydney myself, but I’m Irish, of Irish parents, living in Ireland since my babyhood.

Yes ever since we pretty much unanimously, happily & rightly became the first country to vote for gay marriage they have pushed this woke agenda.

It's creating barriers & divisions in classrooms rather than promoting inclusivity. Is that their aim?

& self id. Ang man that says he’s a woman is a woman. Ireland is often quoted internationally as a shining example of where there are no reports of a single problem with self id

Unless you care about bodily autonomy for women of course. Because he certainly doesn't.

AonFocal1 · 04/09/2024 22:48

@PoolQuandry I would be careful at giving up all other women’s and children’s rights for the right to an abortion. I am pro choice but women’s rights are being massively rowed back with gender issues and abortion isn’t the only important right to have.

Aranknickers · 04/09/2024 23:05

Anyone shocked family B also didn't include a cool mom who was formerly a dad? They missed a trick there!
Family B also didn't have the new "improved" Rainbow flag on display, no so inclusive now are they?!

EternallyConfused100 · 04/09/2024 23:14

I am amazed that there was general outcry about this and it got reversed. Usually anyone who raises an issue like this is flamed as far right gript reader who has no right to any opinion ever.

Maybe the author pushed it a little too far...they'll be more careful next time!!

AncientBallerina · 04/09/2024 23:16

Whoever created and whoever signed off on this beyond offensive stereotyping of Irish people needs to be held accountable. We’ve fought for years against Irish stereotypes and now a publisher of Irish educational books is promoting the stereotype. It defies belief. Undoubtedly the work of so-called progressive blue haired morons. Agree it’s amazing that they didn’t get some gender propaganda in there somewhere.

Orders76 · 04/09/2024 23:42

Abhannmor · 04/09/2024 14:16

Just to add a confession : I own not one but two Aran sweaters. My adult kids wear them too. But they are all dark green / blue. Does this lessen the offence ? 😂

What the hell do you do if your whole family is white, Irish, red haired and likes traditional music and even pizza?
Talk about a setup for bullying

One of the worst things I could see in th cartoon was that with the hair and the eyes, the family almost looked inbred.
It's absolutely shocking beyond belief to portray a stereotype like this. It makes me wonder about the backgrounds and bias in the school book system. Where are the opinions of all walks of life.
When I was growing up we watched BBC tomorrow's world, Bosco going into a factory, floella Benjamin on kids shows. Lovely beginnings of intelligence and diversity. Not any more.

Agree, they backed down very quickly. They want it buried under the carpet before elections. It shows how immense the pushback actually was.

Ourdearoldqueen · 05/09/2024 00:11

I truly thought this was a piss take.

<for full disclosure I have a ginger mam. And she has a jumper but it’s green and it was my Dad’s who wasn’t ginger but did have a cow.>

Aranknickers · 05/09/2024 00:21

With the cost of living crisis what Irish family could afford to be kitted out in aran jumpers.
I searched up the Killarney Woolen Mills to see what type of advertising they did for their jumpers just to compare & contrast, the model certainly didn't fit the sphe mould in fact would probably be more Family B if anything!
