Hi Craicnetters!

I was looking for the other thread and see it's fallen way down the list so I decided to make a new one for all our daily musings ☘️

In England I'd expect bless-ed, belov-ed or learn-ed but not breath-ed or anything like that. It was verbs (he breath-ed softly) not adjectives (it was a paint-ed chair) that I noticed.

I say breath-ed with two syllables!
I'm in Cork.
I actually didn't realise there was any other way to say it, although it's not a word I use much really.
I think I'd be more likely to say 'I was breathing in and out' than 'I breathed in and out' in normal speech.
Wound and found have one syllable for me btw.

TwirlBar · 20/06/2024 14:45

@drspouse
Thinking about it, I think the reason I say it like that is because I have trouble pronouncing th.

So I naturally tend to add an ed sound to form the past tense of breathe as I would if the verb ended in t or d. As I said, it's not a word I use much and that probably matters too.

I'm just guessing really though 😁

But I know I say breathe the same way I say breed.

Just clarifying- Do Protestants put the toaster away in a press and Catholics leave it on the counter or is it the other way around 🙈

My OH is a Southerner and he detests most of our Northern traybakes; neither does he like potato farls, soda bread, wheaten bread or (the ever present in NI cafes) coleslaw - he’s a lost cause that man 😂 He doesn’t even like Fifteens - I despise coconut but even I love Fifteens 🤷‍♀️

But my parents are both from the North so I am well acquainted with potato farls, soda bread, baps etc. - I have the best of both worlds in terms of my palate 😂

Our Northern delicacies make for a sophisticated palate 😬 but I draw the line at Champ (boaky stuff in my view) 😂

JaneJeffer · 20/06/2024 15:29

Soda bread and potato cakes are an island wide thing aren't they? I have no idea what fifteens are. We have cally not champ.

I would have thought the same as yourself until recent years when I’ve found it hard to buy those breads in the South or to find Southerners who eat them - perplexing 🤷‍♀️

Fifteens are a type of traybake:

Fifteens are a classic Northern Irish no-bake traybake. Digestive biscuits, cherries, marshmallows, condensed milk and coconut.

Cally is good all year round, but extra special on St John's Eve which is on Sunday!

eggandonion · 20/06/2024 15:47

I love champ if I an ill.
Protestant toasters get tidied away.
I saw sausage sandwiches in a cafe last week . Sandwiched between 2 fried potato farls.
Fifteens...15 crushed digestives 15 chopped glace cherries 15 chopped marshmallows and a can of condensed milk. All mixed together and rolled into a sausage. Then rolled in dessicated coconut. And chilled. I think that's the lot?
There is a traybakes thread somewhere.

JaneJeffer · 20/06/2024 15:51

Ugh that sounds awful @eggandonion but I'm not a fan of rocky road type things

Plenty soda bread and potato cakes in the west even yer man from the north Irwin is flogging them Grin

Ooooh sausage sarnie made with potato farl….I’m intrigued. Were the farls in the sandwich fried or just served cold do you know? I’m trying to work out how to replicate this delicacy 😁

honeyrider · 20/06/2024 16:46

I love a sausage blaa, hadn't one in ages and spotted one recently, what's seldom is wonderful.

I'm not gone on potato farls but I like toasted pan boxty sandwiches. I only like Drummully boxty, didn't like the other brands I tried.

eggandonion · 20/06/2024 17:32

The farls were fried and the whole delicious item was under one of those heat light jobs.
Very sophisticated.

I’m swooning with delight (and potentially clogged arteries) 😂😂

Sausage sandwich with fried potato farls shows a real commitment to excellence 😆

eggandonion · 20/06/2024 18:12

I used to work opposite a newsagent with a sideline in soda farls stuffed with a fry.
Dhs family only approve of proper sliced loaves and cakes from home bakeries.

I thought that kind of thing was normal for petrol stations, I know the main petrol station in my hometown is like that (it used to have video & dvd rental too in the old days). I just assumed that GB would be the same 😂Although, that particular petrol station looks like they do a very good job.

deeahgwitch · 20/06/2024 20:29

One good thing that happened during COVID was that Cuisine de France stuff and the likes were covered in supermarkets and petrol stations.
Now it's all gone to sh*t again with feckin flies walking all over the food 🤮

I don't know how Health and Safety laws can allow it.

There is one thread at least on Mumsnet about Ulster traybakes.
I made 15s on the back of it.

eggandonion · 20/06/2024 20:37

I think there might have been a follow up thread to the original when important ingredients like condensed milk vanished from supermarket shelves.
I know police officers in England were rumoured to check shopping...I m sure the psni understood the importance of maltesers and cooking chocolate.

I went and had another look and you’re right, the baked goods aren’t covered - that’s not great🤢

That attack by the soldier on the young woman...he got a suspended sentence. He should be booted out of the army and marched into prison.

JaneJeffer · 21/06/2024 11:17

It disgusting that he has just got away with it Angry

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 21/06/2024 11:34

This is absolutely appalling. Beyond appalling.
He may not completely get away with it If he gets discharged from the Defence Forces although I know that this is not sufficient punishment.
