Hi Craicnetters!

I was looking for the other thread and see it's fallen way down the list so I decided to make a new one for all our daily musings ☘️

I was just reading the news about the migrants being moved on from Grand Canal. I can't fathom the thinking behind this mess. They've been moved on to Crooksling apparently but a lot of those interviewed said they'd already been there and moved back to the city as they didn't like it. The article (Irish Times) says 610 more people arrived last week - that's apparently what what we'd usually get in a two-month period. But there is no accommodation! I just can't see how they're going to sort it out. Simon Harris has said he'll "deal with it" BUT HOW?? Sorry for shouting I am just so horrified. Surely it's unethical/immoral to accept people here and then 'house' them in tents? How are they going to integrate into Irish society? Get jobs? Get to and from their jobs? (public transport isn't great around the Crooksling area and I know it's even worse in Newtownmountkennedy - in fact in all the places they're proposing to pitch these tents) What about all the ancillary services like healthcare and social support? I don't have the answers, but my God I expect the Government to. This is all just such a mess. I'm ashamed. Land of a thousand welcomes indeed.

eggandonion · 09/05/2024 14:08

It is a total mess and Im sure Leo saw it coming!
I don't know how government can sort it and I don't know where they could take expert advice.

Well folks! Just finished my second of this week’s Eurovision semi-finals and looking forward to the big night itself. Anybody else here a semi-final watcher?

I’ve had to switch to watching on BBC cos I got tired of Marty having conniptions if Ireland didn’t get voted through to the finals. Rylan & Scott on BBC were actually very entertaining and lowkey; I enjoyed it.

The Swedes always do a good Eurovision.

Edited for spelling

JaneJeffer · 09/05/2024 23:24

I always watch Marty @UtopiaPlanitia. There's a thread on telly addicts but the anti-Irish sentiment can get a bit wearying Sad

Oh, that’s not good 😔

I hope Marty will be in a better mood given Ireland got through to the final this year 😊

I really don't like our song. It's too screechy.

And satanic.
It doesn't represent me, as an Irish person.

eggandonion · 09/05/2024 23:44

I prefer the olden days of Johnny Logan and Dana and Jedward and Linda Martin. Etc. I can't singalong to Bambie Thug.
I will try to see what Graham Norton has to say. But the voting is my favourite part now.

UtopiaPlanitia · 10/05/2024 00:02

Yeah, Ireland’s entry this year wouldn’t be my taste (and I say that as someone who listens to a wide range of music genres) and I really dislike the staging.

Ireland has entered a lot of perfectly good songs in recent years that, sadly, just didn’t get through to the final. I’m inclined to believe this year’s entry got through on shock value rather than musicality.

CliffsofMohair · 10/05/2024 00:11

It’s far from my cupan tae but the staging is so theatrical it is almost mesmerising. I felt like I was watching a particularly disturbing play for 3 minutes. I definitely had a visceral dislike to it when I saw it first. It’s growing on me a bit now. Better than Finland.

JaneJeffer · 10/05/2024 00:13

It should be about the songs not the staging but it's gone too far now to ever go back

I voted for Bambie Thug in the national finals on the basis that they were different and could produce something new and exciting. Their act is like performance art. It's like a gothic horror movie in miniature. Really very powerful and imaginative. The song isn't my cupán tae either but I've become used to it and I admire the duo and their performance. It's mind-blowing. And it's nice to be the focus of something interesting for a change.

I agree.
It's more a visual spectacle than a singer/s singing a song show.

The Eurovision segment on the Late Late is mad Ted

Patrick almost cries almost every week. Im sure he is looking forward to his holliers.
The eurovision fans seem to be having a jolly time.

"I wonder is there anyone else, anywhere in the world, selling sunshine and semen to make a living? . . . "

Philip Boucher Hayes on Countryfile just now. Wonder did he write the line himself or did someone script it for him?

eggandonion · 11/05/2024 08:35

He has a lovely voice.

DeanElderberry · 11/05/2024 10:30

I have a lot of time for him - not least because he played a blinder in the run up to the repeal referendum.

LadyEloise1 · 11/05/2024 13:45

I think Philip Boucher Hayes and Anton Savage are 2 great broadcasters.
Very underrated.

I like both especially Anton.

Beautiful sunny day here, I'd love to go for a snooze but DH is painting a bedroom and I don't think he'd be impressed if I left him working.

Wendysfriend · 11/05/2024 18:53

What the hell is going on with Ireland? Why is your woman refusing to participate in things?

Oooh, I’ve missed some news obviously.

The only news I saw was that she wrote a slogan on her face in Ogham and was told to wipe it off and she swore at the Swedish production rep who told her. Delightful 🤦‍♀️

LadyEloise1 · 14/05/2024 07:54

I just read that a 36 year old mother of 6 living in Dublin died of toxic shock syndrome, sadly, due to a tampon not being removed.
There should be more awareness of toxic shock syndrome.
Perhaps an ad campaign similar to the one about sepsis ?
It took some time for the medics to figure out why the woman was so unwell and she could not be saved. Sad

DeanElderberry · 14/05/2024 08:07

That's terrible - I remember when it was being exacerbated by high-absorbency tampons in the 80s. Even before that, forgetting to remove one was high-risk.

It's a vulnerable part of the body, one of the reasons I found the notion of accepting an offer of a tampon from a random stranger in the jaxx as proposed by Dylan Mulvaney and others so sinister.

eggandonion · 14/05/2024 08:16

It was a big deal in the eighties but I haven't heard it mentioned for years. Poor family.
