New series tonight. Everyone ready for a million windows?

Hello! Checking in! That is one very large decrepit farmhouse!

JaneJeffer · 07/01/2024 22:02

People doing the renovations worried about budget. Dermot: buy, buy, buy

OP posts:
JaneJeffer · 07/01/2024 22:03

Every time I see high ceilings I just think of the heating bill!

Tony is yeah whatever Grin

Is it shorter than usual?

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 07/01/2024 22:33

I also think of the heating bill and how they manage it. Very good insulation might help? A lovely result in the end. Really pretty. The money that was poured into it and the worry of being able to afford it was a strain I'd say.

JaneJeffer · 07/01/2024 22:47

Definitely! Dermot gets carried away and doesn't listen to them when they say they don't want to spend so much money.

My money poured in via grant...
I might stop paying my tv licence in protest.

I thought that.

same vibe with the Hugh Wallace Bungalow Bliss prog from a few years back. Genuinely thought one man was going to have a heart attack with the stress of working 3 jobs in 2 timelines to find it all.

LadyEloise1 · 08/01/2024 00:02

I'm watching.
Great to see an old farmhouse being renovated.
We weren't told how much it cost.
She got her wood flooring.

eggandonion · 08/01/2024 08:16

We should always be given cost breakdowns...purchase price, costs and grants. And how they fund massive cost overrun and afford amazing furniture!

Chickenkeev · 08/01/2024 08:51

I caught up later last night, thought the couple was lovely. And the house turned out really well. You'd be be having a stroke over the money though alright 😬

HareSalient · 08/01/2024 09:04

I’m going to watch it later (I fast-forward through the stressful bits, having just project managed a lengthy house renovation, with phase 2 still to come) but thanks for reminding me.

My architect friend absolutely loathes DB. It’s possible he’s a hate figure for all Irish architects.😀 Another architect friend likes Hugh Wallace, who she says is legit., but has an ingrained horror of the work of the other architect-judge on whatever that Home of the Year programme was (the one where the red cushion indicated the homeowner’s favourite spot) — the dark-haired woman who hated kitchen islands. Amanda something?

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 08/01/2024 09:14

At this stage people must know what's in store when they employ DB. I always admire the end result and I like how bright and airy it is. The one time when he refused to have big windows on his own rebuild still cracks me up when I think of it. I don't know how people have big windows without curtains or blinds though. You would feel exposed and it's not cosy.

LadyEloise1 · 08/01/2024 09:24

@HareSalient
Amanda Bone is the architect.
I have no idea what her architectural work is like but she personally has great style.
I rarely share her views when she gives her opinion on Home of the Year.
Hugh Wallace is less critical.

Wetweatherandmud · 08/01/2024 10:04

Love this programme. Dermot is hilarious.

eggandonion · 08/01/2024 10:05

I think his brother said that teenage Dermot used to cycle round looking in at people's houses. I love a good nosey in myself. Our bus was diverted via an upmarket area about 15 years ago in winter so it was excellent viewing.
He reminds me of a friend's architect son who is also super enthusiastic and wouldn't listen to clients!

Chickenkeev · 08/01/2024 10:12

I always wonder how they clean the giant windows.

That’s the one. Friend refers to her designs as ‘Dundrum humdrum’. I don’t know her (AB’s) work, other than having once been in an extension she did (but it was a party, I was tiddled and not taking much notice), only that she hated kitchen islands.

(It’s possible architects just aren’t keen on tv architects in general. I know I get wildly irritated when what I do gets misrepresented on screen…)

How do we feel this evening?

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 14/01/2024 23:00

I think the couple were lovely. They had huge expectations for their budget. It seemed to me they wanted everything instantly. I thought they did well in the end. The house turned out well. What a fabulous location!

JaneJeffer · 14/01/2024 23:10

I'm watching it arseways because DS1 was watching the snooker so I saw the end first and now I'm watching the rest on +1

Sad that they lost their baby. They seem like a really strong couple though and a real team.

He looks so young to be a school principal. Probably just me getting older!

Amazing view of the Rock of Cashel and I laughed at the frosted windows the old owners had!

I like more internal doors personally.

OP posts:
Chickenkeev · 14/01/2024 23:12

Loved the house. And lovely people again. Dermot is losing his touch, it's all terribly civillised now!

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 14/01/2024 23:15

Agreed on both points! They seemed young and he definitely seemed young to be a principal! I thought I heard him say at the start that he wanted a quiet place away from everyone else. That might have been the outdoor gym but it might not have materialised.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 14/01/2024 23:17

No strife any more 😁
That's the second derelict house as well tonight following on from last week.
