New series tonight. Everyone ready for a million windows?

It always works out in the end.

Well nearly always !

There was a court case a few years ago resulting from an episode of Room To Improve.

I'd like to know the names of the 3 One Stop Shop companies that offer building and energy upgrade works.
I know Larkrock was the name of the company used in last night's episode but wonder what the other two are called.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 22/01/2024 08:46

I missed it last night because we didn't have a signal. Our satellite dish doesn't like wet and windy weather. I'll watch it on Friday.

I’m only fairly newly back in Ireland and don’t fully understand the grants.

Based on the Rock of Cashel view episode and this one, usually you spend the money on renovating and upgrading houses, and claim (some of) it back afterwards? But the ‘one-stop shop’ companies are builders who will do the work upfront and wait for payment till the grant comes through?

And there are also grants specifically for renovating derelict rural houses?

LadyEloise1 · 22/01/2024 08:54

Yes there are only 3 building companies- One Stop Shop - who will take the hit until the grant comes in. But they weren't named unfortunately- obviously the building company involved in last night's episode, Larkrock is one.

HareSalient · 22/01/2024 09:08

DH just today drew my attention to the fact that the divine Dermot apparently didn’t apply for the necessary planning permission for the upstairs of the Rock of Cashel house, and had to apply afterwards for retention, and the application was only approved a couple of days before the programme aired.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 22/01/2024 09:41

I read that Hare. It seems very careless!

eggandonion · 22/01/2024 13:48

I haven't seen last night's episode yet. Is there one we never saw from about 5 years ago?

JaneJeffer · 22/01/2024 16:34

I will have to watch on Friday as well because we had no power.

There was another one that went to court about 5 years ago - I think there was a dispute with a builder but I stand to be corrected @eggandonion

When I was out west last summer at a very historical and ancient church, I spotted that one of the graves close to the church door was carpeted with astroturf!
Is that the thing now?
Or could it be a Tomb for Improvement?

No one’s talking about Dermot versus the unimpressed nutritionist man, and the incredibly disappearing planter? All you could hear was huffing at one point.

Thought it was hilarious - Dermot came across as a right tool. He had no ability to grasp there wasn't the money for the garden. Even after both of the couple directly said it.

Heaven forbid the idea the garden could be done at a later date. According to Dermot there was "no point" in the entire renovation if they didn't do it at the same time.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 23/01/2024 09:32

Looking forward to watching it. That's strange though as the previous week he was fine to plan ahead for the future.

pontipinemum · 23/01/2024 10:55

I missed it Sunday and the recording didn't work, fecking storm!

On the Tipp couple, I was so sad they lost their baby. I've family from not too far away so tried to find out if anyone I know, knows them, they don't. Also that really is how Tipp people sound DH says that's how I sounds 'class' 'right good' 'no way' after I've been down home 😂

How on earth did a school teacher (only promoted to principal mid build) and a Montessori owner afford that?

I liked the coffee shop corner in the recent one. But I thought the online nutrition filming might have been jazzed up with some fresh herbs from just outside.
My neighbour has paved as much of her garden as possible and has a hideous patch of fake grass.

HareSalient · 28/01/2024 21:51

Anyone watching? DH has just walked past and said ‘Jeez, colo-rectal surgery doesn’t buy you much of a house, does it?’ I missed the beginning — was it inherited, and she’s very attached to it, which is why they don’t want to move?

Edited to say that I’m watching this sitting beside a bucket catching a drip. It’s not living in anything Dermot would approve of.

AppropriateAdult · 28/01/2024 21:55

Yeah, it's the family home, next door to her sister and they're very attached it. It wouldn't be standard for a surgeon all right!

JaneJeffer · 28/01/2024 22:23

I don't like it. Nothing blends together.

It certainly didn't fit with the estate anyway. And my god, the woman's accent!

I think the couple are fascinating in a slightly mysterious way. Was Dermot afraid of the surgeon?

I quite liked the downstairs interior, but thought upstairs was sort of blah, and the door handles were hideous. (When we renovated (partly) our place it was weirdly hard to find non-hideous door handles…)

Yes, I would have said the slatty outside would have drawn objections from the POV of not being in character with the streetscape…?

Maybe they just didn't bother putting in for permission 😂

Ewoklady · 28/01/2024 22:36

I didn’t like the house and felt it was really overpriced. The garden and gum were amazing and a lovely couple. She really is an inspirational woman. Their son is still quite young too so they have plenty of enjoyment from it
to come.

Maybe Dermot just twinkles in his Adorable Face of Irish Architecture way at various planning bodies?

I’ve said this before, but he reminds me of Gareth Malone in a hard hat.

Beautiful job on the garden alright, especially to fit in the room and the end when it wasn't a massively long garden in the first place.
