I have been in various groups today in various settings
I've definitely heard a lot of mutterings about "get the fucking foreigners our" from other people.

I wonder will this start a nationalistic right wing movement in Ireland

Plans for further rioting today have caused Temple Street Children’s Hospital to cancel appointments and send some staff home.

I think this shows the riots have absolutely no interest in the welfare of children.

A chance to riot and loot encouraged and funded by right wing elements.

Yet these people would call themselves Patriotic.

I've an awful feeling tik took is driving whatever happens next.

Focus of the news this morning was all on the actions of the "far-right".

Not one person asked what drives an Algerian man to stab three kids and a woman.

The reporting to me sounds like we’ve created this huge issue and we know social cohesion is strained

There is a sizeable movement here and has been for a while. But they were on the fringes. I would worry about the youth from yesterday getting caught up in that now and swelling their ranks. Let's face it, most young people getting involved in that sort of movement are not doing so after lots of serious study and reflection on the topic of immigration. They're disenfranchised and looking for a tribe. Perfect fodder for the far right. They need to be kept in education, by hook or by crook. Education = opportunities. And in the main, people with bright horizons don't feel the need to go out and loot shoe shops and burn busses.

Those bright educated children will leave Ireland

It could be anything though couldn't it? The fact he was Algerian could be entirely irrelevant ie. In the case of mental illness. It'll all come out in the wash no doubt but it's certainly exposed some serious social problems in Dublin.

angsty · 24/11/2023 13:44

I know this is a point from way upthread, but it is not true that everyone retains the nationality of their birth. My DH has formally renounced his former nationality so he does not have it any more. And my DD lives in a country where they do not allow dual nationality so if she was to take their nationality, which she is entitled to do, she would lose both of her present nationalities, one of which is her birth nationality.

theDudesmummy · 24/11/2023 13:45

Mental illness is overwhelmingly the most likely explanation.

Maybe they would have had time for that conversation if it wasn't for the millions of euro worth of damage done to transport systems, businesses, emergency vehicles, people stranded, parents worried about how to get their teens home from a concert, students and staff locked into colleges and workplaces, gardai assaulted, charity boxes looted etc etc etc.

The man was in ireland for 20 plus years- pretty much all his adult life and has irish citizenship. And don't forget the delivery driver- Brazilian- who's been in ireland a year. How many others would have been hurt if it wasn't for his quick thinking?

I'm not quite getting your point there, apologies. Do you mean anyone with an education will leave? Because that's patently untrue. What i was saying is that without education, where an 'underclass' is allowed to develop, there will always be this kind of thing happening. There will always be gangs of angry young (mainly) men that are ripe for people to recruit for their various dodgy 'causes'.

lesdeluges · 24/11/2023 14:04

The "far right" label attached to the scumbags who ran riot last night is so disingenuous. I cannot believe that such labelling is swallowed as truth by many. They are just criminal scumbags, and always were.

Lawless, bored, jobless, testosterone fuelled, excited, social media led scumbags is all they are. Although I am not naive enough to think some on the right let the word out via SM, and the scumbags ran with the torch. The agitators meanwhile slunk off to await the fallout. All engineered to fire up those who know no better.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 24/11/2023 14:05

Social welfare offices in the city centre are closing from 3 this afternoon, 'for safety reasons'. I wonder are they expecting it to kick off again?

SwimmingOnEggshells · 24/11/2023 14:25

@lesdeluges exactly. They have no ideology, just an excuse to wreak havoc and destroy the place.

I would say crack cocaine use is fuelling the violence

It causes unexpected aggression.

It's interesting that @DreamingOfRest compares Dublin to American Psycho and 1980s New York. Wasn't there a crack epidemic in the 1980s in the US?

Local agencies are also struggling to attract staff due to better pay and conditions available with the HSE

I think they are far right in that they are young fellas with no direction and no prospects, so very easy to sweep them up into a 'club'. And people gravitate towards clubs/tribes. Human nature. They're fodder essentially and it seems the government is doing nothing to prevent this.

Abhannmor · 24/11/2023 15:30

I was reading an article about the Triple Lock on Neutrality . Basically in order for Irish soldiers to join in some military action abroad requires the sanction of the United Nations as well as the approval of the government of the day as well as Dáil Éireann .

The present government wants to get rid of the Triple Lock. It seems they can't wait to send our service men and women to kill and die. Then we can play on the world stage with the big lads.

You have to wonder what universe they inhabit. They can't defend the centre of our capital city from a band of crack heads. They can't stop feral skangers beating a tourist into a coma round the corner from Dublin's largest police station. Get a grip ffs.

You can be sure the inhabitants of Dáil Éireann don't see fuck all of Dublin city centre on a regular basis. They do indeed live on a different planet.

On the contrary, Irish politicians are amongst the most connected to the community of any national parliamentarians. We as citizens have access people in other countries find extraordinary. They live on planet us, for the most part. It is probably true to say that not all would have intimate knowledge of the North side inner city unless it is their constituency but they will certainly know their own constituencies, watts and all, pretty damn well. They are certainly not always effective in dealing with issues but most do not live in ivory towers.

Those young lads are a result of failures of successive governments. On one hand they have become disenfranchised and on other they can rack up 100’s of convictions and the only consequence is the odd month or two in prison. Young lads watch the older lads and try to emulate them and often become an even bigger menace to their communities.
Meanwhile the politicians live in nice leafy suburbs away from the consequences of their failures. Already the noises seem to be bring in hate crime legislation and lay blame solely on feet of far right. Irish people aren’t stupid and most will see through this.

IDK, where I am they are nowhere to be seen. It's not an area that is deprived, so perhaps there isn't a need for them to be knocking around? But you wouldn't see or hear from them in between elections.

Abhannmor · 24/11/2023 16:23

This is truer of rural TDs @theleafandnotthetree . Classic 'ward heelers' in my area who rarely go to Dáil Éireann. Lest they miss a GAA presentation or a funeral. Mostly running a farm or an auctioneers. Or still being paid for the teaching job they got in 1987. Wtf do they care about young unemployed people in East Wall or Tallaght. They are probably better briefed about the situation in the Donbass and Luhansk.

I can't disagree with anything you say, it is certainly applicable to many of them. But TDs are a diverse bunch, I think THAT'S my point. The whole 'they are all the same/all as bad as each other' narrative is overly simplistic and corrosive.
