People who get citizenship aren't automatically Irish. You never lose your nationality. Obviously if say an Algerian had a child in Ireland the child would be Irish.

anotherside · 24/11/2023 07:35

@Tantai

Christ on a bike, where to start.

Tantai · 24/11/2023 07:36

@DisquietintheRanks in one way, yes. In the way you mean, no.

Same as Japanese, I thought the British have their own ethnicity too. The people who have lived there for many generations. I believed they would be physically white.

But in the UK it seems right to call an immigrant family British if they are legally allowed to live here.

I apologise if you have taken offence. In my culture it is not offensive to say ‘you don’t look ethnicity’ if someone is saying they are one. I understand that in the UK it is very different.

“People who are granted Irish citizenship aren’t Irish citizens”. Gotcha.

babbygabby · 24/11/2023 07:36

wtf makes men & it’s usually men attack
innocent young random children though. It’s horrific.

Slightly off tangent but do Irish people consider the English who post Brexit decided they should definitely make use of their grandmothers heritage to become Irish as Irish?

Perhaps people asking those questions and are church goers could ask the Priest that on Sunday. Considering the Priests and Church were one of the most prolific abusers of women and children in this Country.

@Tantai
In Britain there is a subtle difference between "being British" and "being English/Scottish/Welsh/Northern Irish"

and for those who aren’t Church attendees?

Yes and no tbh! I have manchester cousins, and they're very connected to us here. But i'd still think they were English tbh. (They make take issue with that!)

But there's still the question of how many generations of your family have to be born in a country for you to be considered to belong?

In the UK this depends on the colour of your skin but it shouldn't.

This has nothing to do with the Church. Stop trying to bring religion into this horrific attack on these children & their carer.
Unless you work for RTE? They try to blame everything on the church! Now @Theblacksheepandme back under your rock & don't dare try to use religion as an excuse to undermine the stabbings of these innocent children. Don't you dare.

To be fair I don’t think it’s just the UK where this is the case. In fact I’d argue the UK is one of the most accepting countries.

I spent some time in S.Korea, there your looks absolutely do decide whether you are Korean or not.

No matter how many generations you’ve lived there.

It may be different for the younger generation, but when I was there a black/white/japanese etc. person saying they were Korean wouldn’t be believed.

I think that is true in many countries.

Shakennotstirred1 · 24/11/2023 08:00

@PallyRoe exactly! Just because one "identifies" as South Korean it doesn't actually make them South Korean!

RTE try to blame everything on the Church? Aye right. Why so defensive?

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 24/11/2023 08:00

Maybe if people are going to spread rumours they could also include the source of said rumour so others can decide how much weight to give them? Twitter is an absolute cesspit this evening. Truly grim

I agree. It's impossible to know what the situation actually is because of all the rumours and exaggerations. However it's also impossible to know simply by following the national news because we know that RTE are not independent and impartial but are spin doctors for our government as indeed are other news organisations such as IT. So how are we supposed to know what's what 🤷🏻‍♀️

Finlesswonder · 24/11/2023 05:23

In the UK we have been told its very racist to say someone who wasn't born here isn't from here

Ridiculous

Read this. RTE reported the attacker said "in the name of Jesus Christ".. It turned out this was entirely untrue but RTE never retracted it.

If the attacker had said "in the name of Allah" by God RTE wouldn't report it.

They are anti Christian at all costs.

Four children wounded in knife attack in French Alps

A Syrian refugee armed with a knife stabbed four young children and injured two adults by a lake in the French Alps this morning in an attack whose motive remains unclear.

You're completely right. This is completely about the stabbings of these innocent children and the woman, but now people are making it about foreign nationals living in Ireland, particularly men. The riots and racism has gone out of control. People saying we are not safe because of the attacks on people of foreign national men need to.look closer to home. We have lived in this Country where people worship an organisation and it's preachers that did horrific things to children and women but you come straight to their defence
Shame on you.

Shakennotstirred1 · 24/11/2023 08:10

@Theblacksheepandme shame on you bringing religion into the equation. Think of the poor children, the poor carer & the man who prevented more innocent children being butchered. Disgusting to try & deflect from the facts & make it about religion. Shame on you.

So those Jewish children mentioned up thread, do you think they're Irish or are they only "identifying as Irish" because their ancestors came from elsewhere?

Shakennotstirred1 · 24/11/2023 08:13

@DisquietintheRanks if they are born in Ireland they are obviously Irish by birth! That's pretty self explanatory

Ok, I'll make it easy for you. Who do you think has abused and raped more women in this country,?

A Foreign National Men
B Priests

angsty · 24/11/2023 08:16

To the person who said upthread that you can't change your nationality, yes, you can.

Shakennotstirred1 · 24/11/2023 08:18

@Theblacksheepandme I am not entering into this discussion with you out of respect for the five innocent people butchered yesterday on our streets at the hands of that Algerian man.
Have some morals.
