My only way to contact my gas man is email. Then wait a month and email him again. I have an ariston boiler and nobody likes them. Only one man will service it.grrr.
Its very chilly and I am happy not to have to go to the ploughing. My ambition is never to go to the ploughing.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 19/09/2023 19:18

There's a big change in the weather.
I could do with a flow chart to keep track of all the weather alerts!
The poor people at the ploughing championships. You would want to be dedicated to deal with all the rain and the mud! (Not me!)
I have put on the heating for a quick blast. We got our fire taken out last winter and have an electric insert fire instead. I loved the real coal fire but I got tired of the upkeep.

eggandonion · 19/09/2023 19:36

Our fire is Really only good with peat briquettes mixed in with coal. I don't want to light it because i will have to keep lighting it.

DeanElderberry · 19/09/2023 19:47

I would quite like to go to the ploughing, but preferably not in this kind of weather, but I'd want to be able to transport out of it with no delay. The idea of spinning wheels in the mud with thousands of other people at the end of the day is very unappealing.

It is technically a year since I started chasing boiler man, at that stage I just wanted him to service the boiler and (with his plumber hat on) to unblock my kitchen sink. Eventually I found someone else to fix the sink, but the boiler didn't get serviced so it's no great surprise that it conked out. I just hope he can repair it - I'd sooner not have to replace it just now.

He has had stuff of his own to deal with - small children, invalid elderly parents, house being renovated and not liveable - but I'll have to be a bit insistent if he doesn't show up this time.

Happierwithouthim · 19/09/2023 19:48

I had free turf from df but he didn't cut any this year so I'm going to be buying fuel this year! Have 3 bags of coal left though

I can quite understand why whichever Jedward wants to get a handyman. Getting any tradesman is really frustrating.

DeanElderberry · 19/09/2023 20:03

My 'when I win the euromillions' fantasy sometimes devolves into 'hire a full time Clerk of Works' to do everything '.

You dread the day that something breaks down.
Our boiler conked out two years ago during Covid times and we replaced it. Obviously it happened during the winter.

eggandonion · 19/09/2023 21:32

We had to replace ours during the really bad winter. So it's probably getting old... I have had it serviced every year in the hope it lives forever. I need my chimney swept too.

honeyrider · 19/09/2023 21:36

I've got my Dunnes Stores version of the oodie on. We had the stove lit over the weekend.

JaneJeffer · 19/09/2023 17:39

I can't bear the whole fire/ashes malarkey so I try to avoid it for as long as possible.

Me too but I find an ash vac is great

eggandonion · 27/09/2023 09:26

I feel like going back to bed for the day. All those people who love autumn should be put outside in their cosy jumpers and mugs of hot chocolate.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 27/09/2023 09:39

It should be declared a Duvet Day down here. Absolutely grim.
According to Jerry, it will be raining again tomorrow, but it will be ordinary, decent rain. Oh and apparently Storm Agnes hasn't made landfall yet. This is rain ahead of the main event.

DeanElderberry · 27/09/2023 09:41

I'm feeling very grateful that the plumber came back and I do have heating. Of course, if the electricity gets knocked out that will go off, so I brought a sack of logs indoors yesterday, and I've filled some watering cans for flushing the loo (well with electric pump) and have some jugs with drinking water.

otoh, maybe the precautions will help me magically escape any storm effects.

Yep, cosy my arse

eggandonion · 27/09/2023 12:13

It keeps coming and going here. Currently just a bit windy and drizzle. When can I expect Agnes back?

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 27/09/2023 12:16

ordinary, decent rain 😆

Sometimes when we get orange or red weather warnings it turns out to be nothing, so I'm hoping it won't be as bad as they've predicted.

I put the heater on in my office for the first time since April. Going to dig out all the winter clothes this weekend. I'm digusted - I bought a raincoat and absoultely hate it. It's almost rubbery so you sweat inside it, even if it's cold out!! and the hood doesn't stay up. Feck sake 🙄 I think I'll just move onto my proper winter coat from next week.

JaneJeffer · 27/09/2023 12:19

There's going to be a heatwave next week @LifeInAHamsterWheel Grin hold tight

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 27/09/2023 12:21

Stop!! where did you hear that?! (or are you messing!)

eggandonion · 27/09/2023 12:23

My winter coat is shabby. My padded jacket makes me look huge. My rain jacket means the rain runs down and I get wet legs. I have a swirly wrap thing but it's not warm.
This is September...soon it will be December and the winter people will be snuggled under fleeces and wearing furry boots. I like late spring best.

JaneJeffer · 27/09/2023 12:26

☀️ high pressure incoming

I just packed up my summer clothes so it must be happening 🙃

JaneJeffer · 27/09/2023 12:33

The last time I put away my summer things it suddenly got hot again. Vexing.

From MET Eireann:

"The signal from the C3S seasonal models for Ireland during the OND period is for above average temperatures to continue with higher than average rainfall likely across Ireland.
Above average temperatures are very likely for Ireland during the OND period, though the likelihood decreases slightly as the period progresses. Mean temperatures are expected to be between 0.5 and 1.0 °C above average nationwide through each of the months.
Wetter than normal conditions are likely across Ireland during OND.
The sea surface temperatures around Irish coasts and over the Atlantic are expected to remain well above average during OND, trending 0.5 to 2.0°C degrees higher than normal."
I love that October, November, December is now the OND period Grin
