Now that 5-11 year olds can be vaccinated...who is getting their child vaccinated? Pros and cons? Trying to decide here and I'm not really finding much info on it.

OP posts:
LizzieAnt · 05/01/2022 23:26

I'll be very happy to get mine vaccinated. I've registered them now, just waiting for appointment. I would have liked it done before they're back at school tomorrow, but unfortunately that didn't happen.

mishmased · 05/01/2022 23:31

I have registered mine yesterday. After registration it said they will be in touch I think in about 3 weeks. I'm sure we will have caught covid at that stage 😂 I keep swinging from yes to wait a little longer. Still unsure here 😐

theleafandnotthetree · 06/01/2022 09:42

My daughter has hers tomorrow, both she and I very keen and happy to get it done.

Deadringer · 06/01/2022 09:47

I agonised over it, but went ahead about a month ago. My dd is nearly 12 though, not sure i would have done it if she was a lot younger.

Abhannmor · 06/01/2022 10:06

No harm in it. We all had it for polio ,diphtheria, typhus , TB etc etc. Bit puzzled though as it won't stop Omicron afaik? Might prevent bad symptoms or serious illness though.

Annaghgloor · 06/01/2022 12:36

We've signed up our nine-year-old, but no appointment notification yet.

To anyone whose under-12 has had their first shot already, how were they after it? After my first, I was quite ill for a day or two and had a horrible 'burnt arm' sensation for a full weekend to the extent that I couldn't roll over in bed without a lot of discomfort, and am hoping DS won't have similar.

AnTineBeag · 06/01/2022 15:02

Still undecided here. Will see how the next few weeks go 🤔

PleasantBirthday · 06/01/2022 15:46

Organising it now for my 6 year old. Can't understand why people are hesitant about this vaccine.

mycatistrans · 06/01/2022 17:55

My child is getting it on Friday. I wouldn't hesitate for a second and don't really understand people who would.

I'm long since past trying to understand people's attitudes to vaccines. A child in my daughter's class is not playing sport (which he loves) because of the danger of Covid but is going to school with no mask and won't be vaccinated, just like his parents. There is very little logic or consistency.
PleasantBirthday · 06/01/2022 19:59

That's just stupid. I don't know why this idea that the vaccine is incredibly dangerous for children is coming from (apart from internet lulas, of course).

Puppalicious · 06/01/2022 23:13

I guess for some people they just don’t see the benefit of it, particularly if it doesn’t stop transmission. I’ve never bothered with the flu jab for my kids, for example. My DH is against it, I don’t feel strongly enough either way. The risks of both covid and the vaccine seem pretty low, and as I’ve given my kids all the other vaccines, including rubella which is for others benefit, I will probably push for this in the end. But happy to see how things play out over the next few months first.

853ax · 06/01/2022 23:41

About 3 hours after registering got appointment for Sunday
9&6 yo
Seems lot of talk about it at school today few in class already have got it.

mishmased · 07/01/2022 12:22

@853ax that's quick. How old is your child? Mine are 6 and 8, registered on Monday eve and it said 3 weeks.

Annaghgloor · 07/01/2022 12:31

That does sound quick, @853ax -- DH registered DS a few days ago, but no appointment yet.

Alieninmybody · 07/01/2022 12:36

If your on Instagram The Fabulous pharmacist and Dr. Laura had a chat about it recently. Both will not give it to their children who don't have underlying conditions. They explained well why. Also Dr. Lisa Cunningham has said the same. They said that's their stance for now and are open to change if it's appropriate.
All are very pro vaccine in general.
I don't see the benefits of vaccinating the young and healthy.

Garman · 07/01/2022 12:54

Registered a few days ago and got an appointment for this Sunday, but am doubting myself now because DH doesn't think dc should get it and theres so much info for either side.

PleasantBirthday · 07/01/2022 12:58

I'll probably not take too much medical advice from shameless self promoters on instagram.

MegCleary · 07/01/2022 13:14

Irish mum in uk here and Very envious they are getting vaxxed at home. My 14 year old here vaxxed and my 10 year old furious her cousins who are 9 and 5 will now be vaxxed and she won’t. I’m the only one not vaxxed she complains

Alieninmybody · 07/01/2022 13:54

I get you but to be fair they provide a lot of medical info and advice for free. They're not the usual run of the mill insta hun accounts but each to their own.

My nearly 12 year old got her first one yesterday. She has a slightly sore arm today, but otherwise fine.
Frenchfurze · 08/01/2022 16:01

That’s good to hear, that people’s children aren’t feeling really off after the vaccine — I had one really flu-y feeling day after my first shot, fine after the second, and knocked out for 36 hours by my booster in Dec, so I’d like DS to get off more lightly.

853ax · 08/01/2022 18:41

@mishmased appointment text for the 9 year old HSE website said if other siblings registered can bring them same appt so I'm going to try that.
Reg Tue appt text few hours later appt Sunday

mishmased · 08/01/2022 23:20

@853ax thanks for your reply. I registered late Monday for my 8 (nearly 9) year old and 6 year old. I just logged back in and this is showing waiting for first appt. That's great you can take siblings.

My child got hers today. She's in perfect form, just a sore arm. Will be delighted when she gets her 2nd one.
