Now that 5-11 year olds can be vaccinated...who is getting their child vaccinated? Pros and cons? Trying to decide here and I'm not really finding much info on it.

All went well with vaccines today no complaints since, hope they ok at school tomorrow after it.

mishmased · 09/01/2022 22:58

That's great to hear. Thanks for the update.

theleafandnotthetree · 10/01/2022 08:03

My daughter got hers on Friday, not a bother on her since. The staff working at the vaccine centre were extraordinarily nice and kind and welcoming, mine wouldn't have necessarily needed that approach (she's a tough cookie) but it was lovely to see.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 10/01/2022 11:07

We had covid over Christmas so my 6yo wont be getting it. I'm very pro-vax but I can't see the point in getting young children vaxxed in this instance. We don't vaccinate for chicken pox and they're as likely to be hospitalised for that as they are for covid.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 10/01/2022 11:10

Edit: Maybe even more likely to hospitalised for chicken pox, I just came across an article which says that in 2015 there were 69 hospitalised chicken pox cases.

YesIKnowIABUbutIamreallytired · 10/01/2022 14:46

We have decided not to get it for ours for now. They are at very low risk from covid, and the hse info sent out by the school actually said the information they have on long term side effects is limited, and if you want to wait for more info be become available it's advised to wait, so that is what we are doing.

Many people do choose to vaccinate privately for chickenpox. I did.

We did, too, Neither DH nor I had it as children, DS kept coming into contact with it in the early years at school but not catching it, and then his classmate and our neighbour passed it onto her mother, who was really ill with it the pox ulcerated in one of her eyes! so we thought we wouldn't leave it to chance and got the three of us vaccinated for it.

Yes, a couple I know who are both doctors did so. I wasn't even aware that you could! (and both of mine had it before I realised there was that option).
Mojoj · 10/01/2022 18:01

No.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 10/01/2022 21:00

Sorry, I should have been more clear re chicken pox, yes I know some choose to vax for chicken pox but it's not in the national immunisation schedule for children but now covid essentially is. I suspect that chicken pox is more likely to cause complications than covid for children, I'd be interested to know stats comparing the two.

I also considered getting the chicken pox vaccination but my children ended up getting it before I had a chance to do anything about it.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 10/01/2022 21:01

Varicella (chicken pox) vax is included in the Canadian immunisation schedule as fair as I know.

I'd prefer our government to prioritise varicella vaccine over covid.

Blogdog · 10/01/2022 21:23

I also had my children vaccinated against chicken pox but it was primarily because at the time I had no emergency childcare and there was no way we could have taken the extended time off work needed to care for them if they caught it.

I will be getting them vaccinated against Covid - awaiting first appointment now.

Whether it'll be added to the vaccination programme in Ireland could be under review, it seems -

I think it's only a matter of time personally.

Our six year old has her appointment on Friday. It comes around very quickly!

mineallmine · 11/01/2022 16:34

Mine had hers on Sunday and there wasn't a bother on her after it.

PleasantBirthday · 11/01/2022 16:42

Excellent, that's good to hear, hopefully ours will be the same. We've notified the school that we'll keep her out for the day just in case.

mishmased · 11/01/2022 20:34

Just got a text for appointment for Sunday and next Wednesday for my two. Knowing my luck they will catch covid before the weekend 😂

My daughter went straight back to school afterwards wearing her sticker and available to answer everyone's questions! She was the first in her class to get vaccinated. She had absolutely no after effects

Orchidaceae · 13/01/2022 06:11

Mornimg, I got 2 vaccinated last sat. Mine 9year old DS wouldn't even take his coat off he has such a fear. No amount of coaxing. Anyone else's child have such fears?

Otherwise no side effects from the other pair and staff were fabulous

mishmased · 16/01/2022 11:22

Do the kids need id? I cant find my child's birth cert. I presume my id should be sufficient.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 16/01/2022 11:24

I was asked for her ID. I showed them her passport. I also had her PPS number with me, but they didn't ask for it.

mishmased · 16/01/2022 12:19

Thanks @IsFuzzyBeagMise. Forgot about passport. I showed my ID. Just for anyone with kids, they said you can bring siblings to the centre. My second child's vax appt is Tuesday and I was told he can come in today. Waiting at the centre for DH to bring him I .

PleasantBirthday · 16/01/2022 13:18

So the vax on Friday went great, no issues at all, she felt fine afterwards and went swimming on Saturday morning, no bother.
