I got some washing out; very good drying :)

JaneJeffer · 21/02/2022 22:22

Watching the programme about Vincent Hanley and the way Gay Byrne harangued him about his illness was awful.

I have that on record @JaneJeffer I'm looking foward to watching it. I remember him but didn't really take in the whole situation at the time. I know it will be a hard watch, what an awful time to be gay I'm so glad that things have improved.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 22/02/2022 11:16

I'll look at it on the player. I don't remember Vincent or the programme. I was fairly young, twelve years old in 1986 and had no older siblings, so no-one watched it at home. Ireland must have been a very difficult place to live in if you were gay. I wasn't aware of it at the time. There was no mention of homosexuality at all.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 22/02/2022 12:05

Yes I was 12/13 at the time but was very into music and watched MT USA all the time! I vividly remember the show but I don't recall him getting sick, I just know now from articles and tv programmes etc. I remember the ads about AIDS and wearing condoms etc but my parents would have tripped over themselves to turn it off or change the subject! Homosexuality certainly wasn't discussed openly in our house! I'm so glad that times have changed. The fabulous "It's a Sin" was a great insight into that time, so many people were terrified of AIDS, terrified they'd be found out as they had tried to conceal the fact they were gay Sad

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 22/02/2022 12:09

I definitely remember the Aids scare but it wasn't discussed at home.

eggandonion · 22/02/2022 14:45

Its a Sin was both really hard to watch, and really lovely. I was in England all through the eighties, before that I was in Belfast. Where we had a Save Ulster from Sodomy campaign against changes in legislation.
There were always men who were thought to be a little bit artistic in Belfast. In England I had two gay bosses, assorted gay colleagues, gay friends, and a couple of customers who were transvestites. And the HIV crisis was happening. One of my bosses died in his early forties.

honeyrider · 22/02/2022 17:14

I used to watch MTV USA and Vincent Hanley, iirc it used to be on Sunday afternoons for a few hours. I moved to the UK in late 1984 so didn't hear anymore about Vincent Hanley.

I missed the start of the show last night so missed the Gay Byrne bit but not surprised to read how he treated Vincent Hanley. Gay Byrne's reputation is overrated, you were never in any doubt about his prejudices, Annie Murphy springs to mind.

Agree with you there @honeyrider

He was sanctimonious. His interview with Annie Murphy was appalling.

JaneJeffer · 22/02/2022 20:04

What happened my bold? Again!

@Owieeee

Im right on the coast in the west and its been fine, windy but there's been worse days. Is this a new thing now? Closing schools down when its stormy? Is it all total risk adversion.? It seems to have come hand in hand with the pandemic, lockdowns...and of course people could get hurt in the wrong place at the wrong time like they could in the many storms and normal days we have anyway..Went out with dcs to get fresh air and exercise ao made the best of it. They werent stuck in front of screens all day. Pity there's not more a proactive attitude to all the obesity in Ireland which is a big risk to people's lives. Off topic but so relevant imho.
Red weather warnings closing stuff down is pre-pandemic - Think Storm Emma/Beast. But ultimately closing schools is a fast and efficient way to remove a lot of people from the roads quickly. That reduces the risks from fallen/falling trees.
eggandonion · 23/02/2022 23:25

There was a massive storm here about 8 years ago, at its peak about 1 to 4 pm. Schools were getting out, it was really dangerous. We had so many trees down then, travel was dangerous . And now online can work for schools the odd day I suppose they will use that.
Really awkward for parents working in places that have to stay open though.

LadyEloise1 · 24/02/2022 09:41

Weather forecast really odd here. On my iPhone it said it would snow. No snow. Hmm
Is it snowing where you are ?

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 24/02/2022 10:07

There are showers of sleet. We rarely get snow down south.

Iblinkedandiamold · 24/02/2022 14:56

I got up at 6.30 to use the loo and my place was covered in snow. Thank God we are on midterm and I don't have to drive anywhere. Went back to bed and slept until 11am.

eggandonion · 28/02/2022 17:59

Went to the supermarket, i reckon about 60 percent of staff had masÄ·s on similar with customers. I was surprised deli staff don't need masks, they are a bit close to the sandwich fillings! I am keeping the mask until the end of March, possibly until Easter, although I know we were told they protect other people.
There were groups of secondary kids about, all of them seemed to have bad coughs!

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 28/02/2022 19:18

I went to SuperValu before 6pm. It was quiet. The majority of customers weren't wearing masks. I was. I'm not sure I'm ready to take it off yet. I've managed to avoid the plague so far and I want to keep it that way (fingers crossed).

I agree with you about the deli staff and the sandwich fillings!

eggandonion · 28/02/2022 19:24

Hygiene personnel were also not wearing masks. Nor was a staff member who I know has health problems.
Tomorrow afternoon Im heading to the big city and will observe what's going on there!

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 28/02/2022 19:50

Report back Grin ! I don't know. Part of me wants to move on, another part of me likes the thought of staying safe and snug in my mask :)

honeyrider · 28/02/2022 19:54

I went to my local Tesco - a large one just before lunch and the vast majority of customers and staff were wearing masks, probably around 90%. DH said nearly all the pupils and teachers in his school were wearing masks.

I'm heading to London at the weekend, at least I've had covid recently so I'm not as worried and contracting covid now.

JaneJeffer · 28/02/2022 21:13

I saw lots of people with masks today and I had one because I thought tomorrow was D Day Grin

I quite like the anonymity of masks. Very mysterious. Im also amazed that I can recognise people with masks on. Because if I had to give a description of a baddy i would be useless.

LadyEloise1 · 01/03/2022 07:21

@eggandonion
I too am surprised that I can recognise people with masks on. Not all the time though, the odd time if someone has a beanie / hat on and / or scarf I don't recognise them.
