I heard there's been a drop in temperature but I'm housebound with covid thanks to DH sharing it.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 11/02/2022 09:31

Yes that's true @honeyrider, the schools need to step up too. They can't all go to college, some kids just aren't suited to it. Plus, a degree nowadays doesn't necessarily lead to a well-paid job. In fact, in that rant the guy was saying that after completing a 4 yr apprenticeship, an electrician would be on 39k a year and that's basic! What graduate would start on that salary?

Sorry to hear you have covid, I hope you're not too ill? My dsis is only just recovering she was wiped out with it for nearly 3 weeks.

eggandonion · 11/02/2022 09:57

Dont apprenticeships now also involve college too? My neighbours son is now an electrician, at 27 he has a company van and his own bmw. My daughter has a friend who was not brilliant academically in school, did a plc then an apprenticeship with a security firm. He works all over Ireland and on international assignments.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 11/02/2022 10:19

Get well soon, honeyrider. I have two friends who are getting over it.

I agree with the comments regarding apprenticeships. My DD who is in 5th year said that there was a good discussion on apprenticeships during career guidance class and she was impressed with the wide range of options open to school-leavers.

honeyrider · 11/02/2022 10:52

Last year the government announced they're going to pay €3k per person employers take on as apprentices, I'm not sure if that's €3k per year but hearing what was proposed at the time it seemed to be a very good incentive.

One of my nephews changed career shortly before Covid hit and is doing a plumbing apprenticeship. He loves it, plumbers make very good money, it's one of the better paying trades.

There's such a shortage of trades and it's near impossible to get someone for the small jobs. Fortunately DH has friends in the different trades so we can get someone whenever we need some work done, DH is a carpenter though no longer working in construction as he changed career during the crash but he can do most things bar electrical or plumbing jobs.

I'm feeling a bit better today, not coughing as much and my throat feels a lot better. I feel weak and tired but I haven't been sleeping much.

LadyEloise1 · 11/02/2022 13:05

Glad you're on the mend @honeyrider Thanks

honeyrider · 11/02/2022 18:27

Thanks, covid is like a bad cold but I've had worse colds over the years and the killer for me when I get colds is that it takes ages to shift a cough. I actually feel I'm recovering quicker than previous colds and I'm putting that down to the vaccination.

I think if I'd gotten a positive case this time last year I'd have been terrified thinking I might not survive it considering I tick 3 out of the 5 high risk conditions.

JaneJeffer · 14/02/2022 21:08

Thanks for the well wishes. Have to go back for a scan but doctor didn't seem worried so fingers crossed all ok.

Fingers crossed JaneJeffer. That's good to hear. I hope you can relax a bit now.

My oldest dd is not very academic but has a gra for animals and cooking, that type of thing. She's only in second year but I really haven'ta clue what would suit or what to encourage. I do feel very lost myself, never mind her

eggandonion · 15/02/2022 08:43

My daughter has a friend who tried vet nursing but couldn't cope with surgery. She did early childhood studies, that's where she works now. I think she is under paid and under valued, but she's happy.

1Week · 15/02/2022 09:00

Underpaid and undervalued definitely.
I know there's nothing stopping girls going into trades but they don't, do they? Yet they are good jobs.

eggandonion · 15/02/2022 11:14

I think they stop themselves, no matter how much encouragement good schools give them. By good I mean inclusive schools who offer the technical subjects and leaving cert applied. I have 3 grown up kids, one has a degree in a technical subject, and she has a few women friends in engineering jobs. But most of the people she works with are men. I can't think of anyone my other kids know who did trades.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 16/02/2022 10:07

I'm back to talk about the weather again Grin

Are we all set for Dudley Eunice?! I believe Dudley's bringing wind & rain (and will mostly affect the north of the country) and Eunice might bring snow? I will buy an extra loaf today anyway just to be sure haha

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 16/02/2022 10:21

Dudley and Eunice! Yes, it's time to stock up on the Brennan's!! It has been so calm for a while and now two storms are coming along at once.

eggandonion · 16/02/2022 12:18

Dudley looks like a miserable sort of auld lad, just arriving now to moan. Im hoping Eunice is bright and breezy.
Neither Dunnes nor SuperValu have boxes of tissues just now, only wee packets. What's that all about.

JaneJeffer · 16/02/2022 13:18

Our local Dunnes got the big Kleenex double packs back in last week, the ones that used to be mansize pre-woke. There's always a shelf of something missing these days though.

eggandonion · 16/02/2022 13:43

I haven't been able to find olives in lidl for weeks, they must have moved them. If dunnes don't have tissues tomorrow I will complain and say i was told they are available in other branches.Smile

1Week · 16/02/2022 14:36

Things are getting dearer as well

LadyEloise1 · 16/02/2022 14:53

Dudley is a miserable old lad !!!
Absolutely soaked through here. I actually squeezed rainwater out of my tights I'm that wet. Smile

eggandonion · 16/02/2022 15:47

I have put my washing out, no rain here yet. But Dudley has wind.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 17/02/2022 11:09

Eunice is going to come in with a bang tonight (red alert issued). Bring in your washing, egg!!

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 17/02/2022 11:10

Red for Cork/Kerry.

eggandonion · 17/02/2022 13:12

Just what we need. Discussion on schools staying closed because Eunice might not have gone....

eggandonion · 17/02/2022 13:18

Cork and Kerry schools closed, also in the North West
