They need a few ministers in charge of health, ones that will stay on. It’s too big a job for one person. It’s completely inefficient. Even the most basic clinics are full of wastage.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 31/01/2022 09:15

It was very hard watching the little girl with spina bifida on the news, waiting for her operation to be scheduled, crying because she wanted straight feet like everyone else. The longer the delay, the more difficult it is to treat.

LadyEloise1 · 31/01/2022 09:43

@IsFuzzyBeagMise I saw the little girl on the news too and started to rant on at dh about the salaries of the head of the Department of Health and the HSE boss ( plus their perks ) and the fact that she can't get her operation.
Who decides these ridiculously high salaries when our health service isn't fit for purpose ?

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 31/01/2022 09:46

I agree with you LadyEloise1. It's plain wrong.

eggandonion · 31/01/2022 10:29

I can only assume that the whole system is so dreadful nobody wants to take control, so massive salaries are offered.

Lemon27 · 31/01/2022 18:02

Hi all, have just discovered this thread! 👋

I tested positive for covid last week and if I'm honest have been thoroughly enjoying the 'isolation' (in the lightest sense as I have 2 smallies at home and a husband that we are all doing it together). So I've had (slightly) more time to scroll mumset and other sites.

Re the HSE: I remember years ago attending an Irish health care conference and there was a speaker there from some Australian hospital group. They noted that when the health boards merged to make the HSE (remember they had 4 separate ones), not one person or role became redundant. The speaker was agog that you could merge 4 large beasts into an even bigger beast to supposedly increase efficiencies, but not one department lost anyone. Shows the mentality.

eggandonion · 31/01/2022 20:39

Hello Lemon, hope you have a lesser dose of covid.
I remember the no job loss merger, but surely most are retired now. Although I wouldn't be surprised if the people with duplicate jobs had been replaced.

halfpasteleven · 31/01/2022 22:30

Big changes are most definitely needed in the HSE..
How many more scandals will we hear about before something is done?

Shocking news from Kilkenny tonight..
Thank God she escaped..
I hope they catch him soon.
Scary times for mna na hEireann.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 04/02/2022 12:10

How is everyone doing this lovely Friday? well, it's lovely where I am, cold but dry and sunny. I am starting to see a slight bit of a stretch in the evenings, when I leave work it's not as pitch dark as it has been. There's hope! I cannot wait for Summer. Mind you, I just noticed the very bottom of my legs you know just above the ankle, and I realised I need to engage in a spot of 'self care' Blush I may dust off the razor in the shower tonight!! Then that got me thinking to how old the tube of body lotion in my bathroom is, I better replace with something new from Tesco this evening! (I presume it goes out of date??) Maybe winter has it's benefits...

JaneJeffer · 04/02/2022 12:22

I need some major defuzzing as well Life I have a hospital appointment next week and don't want to traumatise anyone Grin

It's an awful day here in the West, very cold, there's snow on the mountains.

JaneJeffer · 04/02/2022 12:26

I think I have enough body lotion in the house to cover everyone in the county. It may also be out of date but I don't heed those things unless something smells weird!

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 04/02/2022 16:00

Maybe I'll sniff the stuff I have Jane and carry on using it if it doesn't knock me out Grin

I hope all goes ok with the hospital appointment.

Iblinkedandiamold · 04/02/2022 21:06

It was awful and lovely awful and lovely here today. Couldn't go outside though, it was freezing and it was so unpredictable.
It's my birthday today and I've eaten so much cake that I feel sick. I also forgot my age and I actually thought I was a year older than I am. I love birthdays. Not the getting older just the cakes. Grin

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 04/02/2022 21:09

Happy birthday Iblinkedandiamold! BrewCake

3luckystars · 04/02/2022 21:20

I did the same thing I thought I was a year older for the whole year last year. Happy birthday anyway!

BiddyPop · 04/02/2022 22:14

I'm having a tough time too at the moment, having never stopped working at full tilt (when I was supposed to have a move to an easy section for a small break)...

This week, the political system kicked in again so I am under serious pressure, which is tough but (sort of) manageable for me. But my boss has 2 aspects plus a whole load of tier problems. I have never seen my boss not dealing with things - but twice yesterday she was in floods of tears.

I have not been outside the house for weeks except to do grocery shopping, attend 1 medical appointment and 2 Cub Scout meetings (as the main leader), and 1 yoga class.

I swear, I will take a single day off soon, not next week (see political system), but soon.

And teen dd will also be the help she needs too. Even if camhs doesn't exist in our region and the charity that covers that role has been less than useless....

BiddyPop · 04/02/2022 22:34

My move literally coincided with the first lockdown so instead of relatively relaxed septum, I learned 3 new jobs in the course of 6 months, including emergency legislation and frickin' major normal legislation in 2 completely different areas. (And a 3rd bunch of legislation somewhere I spent a short while).

LadyEloise1 · 05/02/2022 00:29

Happy Birthday @Iblinkedandiamold 🎉

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 05/02/2022 15:41

Happy birthday @Iblinkedandiamold sure if you can't eat cake on your birthday what can you do?!

I'm sorry @BiddyPop I couldnt quite follow your posts but it sounds like you're having a hard time. I hope things improve soon.

Absolutely bloody freezing here, I was out for a walk and couldn't feel my face!

Ireland are winning the rugby hopefully we can stay on track.

halfpasteleven · 05/02/2022 21:37

Lying in bed with a book listening to the lashing rain and gusty wind here ..
It's been a while since we had this type of weather!
We were lucky with January.
Not a bad way to spend a Saturday night.. when I think of the nights out when I was younger the night would only be starting now

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 06/02/2022 19:45

The weather was rather wintery over the weekend. We're not out of it yet!
Wishing you good luck with your hospital appointment this week @JaneJeffer! I hope it goes well.

eggandonion · 08/02/2022 18:00

I was out for a walk with my dog before work and had to remove my thick jumper because it was so mild. We were out about 5 o'clock and i wished i was wearing the thick jumper.
Lots of spring flowers appearing.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 10/02/2022 12:45

Sorry to be so typically Irish but just to comment on the weather, again! It's bloody freezing today Shock had to fully de-ice the car this morning. Although it's a beautiful sunny day where I am, it's so so cold and I'm glad I wore my thermals!

I was listening to a rant that a guy has put up on Facebook that's gone viral. He's an electrician and is saying how so many parents are dismissive of apprenticeships and only want their children to go to college. He then goes on to list the many advantages of an apprenticeship. I have to say I totally agree with him. I do find it a very snobby attitude and rather stupid really since anyone I know who is a qualified tradesman is doing very well for themselves! I think we need to do better though in terms of the number and types of apprenticeships we offer and also try to encourage more girls into trades. There are horror stories of companies taking apprentices on and treating them so badly. If done properly it can lead to a fantastic career.

eggandonion · 10/02/2022 14:04

I think apprenticeship is a great opportunity for a lot of young people, and plc. Schools seem to forget to mention them. My three kids all did degrees which included placements, learning through doing is far better than memorising.
I was frozen in work despite my vest, im sitting in the sum at home now.

honeyrider · 10/02/2022 23:58

It's not just some parents that are snobby about apprenticeships it's teachers and schools too. You only have to look at the snobbery when the Irish Times publish the school league tables.

A lot of schools don't want apprenticeships lowering their ranking. One of my nephews was looking out the window in class one day and a teacher told him if he kept looking out the window he's only end up on a building site.

Both of my children have degrees, one doing his masters at the moment and the other one who's a chartered accountant with one of the big 4 recently said he'd love to be an electrician.
