He used to be in a band with Tony Connolly of RTÉ fame back in the day.

halfpasteleven · 31/10/2021 04:37

He speaks a lot of sense

SilverGlitterBaubles · 31/10/2021 12:25

@Radyward Ageed re the severe impact all the restrictions and constant state of fear has had on people's mental health. My DPs and older relatives are utterly terrified and obsessed with Covid news and hang on the words of government/ NPHET/RTE. When people like Pat Kenny are on the national state broadcaster advocating that unvaccinated should be locked down things are way out of control. What kind of country are we living in. Thanks to constant pontificating by people like this the older people in my family have lost all perspective of risk and it has literally ruined their lives. All were previously physically and socially active but now believe that everyone and everything is fraught with the danger of Covid. They no longer even want to see their DGCs. It is just so sad to see them live out their final years like this.

Iblinkedandiamold · 31/10/2021 12:46

It's a horrible life. I have fallen out with my son again over me not seeing my granddaughter. He doesn't see that I am nervous. I would never forgive myself if I gave her something. Not just Covid but there are some other nasty bugs going around.
He thinks I don't care. He's still in the egotistical stage of development so doesn't see the bigger picture.
In other news wooden toys are on sale in Aldi. I have my two young nephews sorted. My brother is going to kill me. Grin

FionaMacCool · 31/10/2021 13:04

Not sure that Radyward lives in Ireland, if I remember correctly.

I will happily take the booster, when offered, for my own and my family's health.

And, how many times does it need to be said, the impact of Covid is not just the numbers of people falling ill, or dying from it. It is the numbers in hospital, therefore limiting the bed numbers available for traffic accidents, cancer care etc etc.
Reducing the numbers is about ensuring that our health services are not swamped again.

I certainly dont feel that my freedoms have been limited; I feel very very lucky to live in a country where the government has freely provided vaccines for all.
[The limitations on my children's education and my contact with older parents, was, in my view, a fair price to pay. It has also taught my children about the importance of mutuality, and collective responsibility. They have also observed my interactions with conspiracy theorists, and learned that you treat the person with respect, even when you dont agree with their opinion].

"Id love to understand the psychology behind the narratives we are being fed"
The psychology around it is that we have a society which cares for it's fellow members, collectively. Lucky us. We get lots of things wrong, but on the whole, it is very heartening to see that people are wearing their masks still, are happy to go through their Covid questions when they attend appointments, keep their distance.

Radyward · 31/10/2021 13:28

I think at this stage its nuts to sacrifice every other business to "save the hse "its so heavily laden with pen pushers and admin staff. Its awful how badly run it is . Im tired of the micro control and upset to my kids education . Enough is enough. 92% vaxxed
I do live in Ireland. I posted on another thread yonks ago and said i lived abroad as felt what i was discussing was too outing ( a fact which is none of anyone's business) last i saw anyone can discuss on These pages.
I feel so sorry for kids in masks in schools and so many vaccinated now. There really is no living with covid plan. At all. Like these emergency laws keep being extended. Its so wearing.i have moved on by not looking at the news as have my parents in order to protect my MH . Its just all too depressing.
Nphet are crazy control freaks - they have served their purpose. Paul reid needs to be grilled and perspective applied - its us thats payinh him fgs .
Check out twitter the hse covid consultant
. Im a bit suspicious is he actually a consultant but seems kosher .
Tony holohan lauded early on as the daddy of the nation finger wagging the bold public . Just take yourself off there T. No one with half a brain wants his pontificating.
What annoys me is not once were the public thanked for the personal sacrifices they or their families made. I mean just how much more has to be asked of us with the majority vaccinated. Like seriously. people with any cop on can see this for what it is we are being controlling by power junkies

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 31/10/2021 13:41

It's worth remembering that the Delta variant is three times more transmissible than the original strain of Covid. That makes a difference. We're lucky that the vaccines are still a good line of defence and we were fortunate to get them.

I'm also grateful that we live in a considerate, caring society, where people are masked up and mindful of others.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 31/10/2021 13:53

I just want to add that I have a brother who is experiencing anxiety since this all began, so I am aware of the effects that this has had on people.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 31/10/2021 14:06

Ireland suffered longer and harsher restrictions than most other countries, I mean the 5km thing and Garda checkpoints were just the pits. Now has one of the highest rates of vaccinated populations but still not good enough. No thanks, no well done guys you've been amazing they just want more and more. Where do all the billions of state funds pumped into the HSE go exactly when lots of healthcare is actually paid for through private insurance.

FionaMacCool · 31/10/2021 14:27

Tony Holohan- the gentleman who stepped up, when he had every personal reason and excuse to avoid the responsibility?
In my book, that's a person who deserves deep respect and gratitude. I am grateful for his guidance.

I was in the supermarket yesterday, and it occurred to me:- with Brexit and the pandemic, there have been minimal shortages.
Baking powder was hard to get a hold of there for a while, everyone went a bit nuts sewing their own face masks, and some work stuff has been slow. But, no real shortages.

Somebody somewhere has been working night and day, to ensure that we havent been left short.
Of course, no-one gets thanked for that. It doesn't even draw attention. There is bread on the shelves, and toilet roll, and petrol at the pump. That's just the way it "should be".

Not that anyone in that line does it for thanks- they're adults. The fact that things went right, and that they did the right thing in hard times, that's thanks enough.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 31/10/2021 17:43

@FionaMacCool Ireland Brexit preparations have undoubtedly been well planned and executed and undoubtedly something to be very grateful for and proud of.

Radyward · 31/10/2021 18:43

I do agree that nphet had a really unprecedented job to do and Tony Holohan was there through out in the midst of his wifes illness. Poor family.
Ronan glynn didnt come across as quite so patronising 14 mths in when he "took the reins" . Tony wanted to come back obvs but it felt like there there good boy Ronan off you toddle !!Im in charge and the narrative became instantly more hardline. The fear rhetoric ramped up a notch . He loves the limelight our unelected leader at the steering wheel of peoples lives !! Masks are pointless unless ffp3
Not one medical journal gives them any credence in protecton against micrometer size particles
Its all security theatre . Peoples pointless security blanket. What society can be devoid of human expression for so long without serious mental issues !!!
1800 cases id say x ten fold as people are doin antigen at home and us all masked up. Tg im not in my early twenties that poor generation. And as for college students. Poor them .
Personal choices and freedoms have no sign of being restored any time soon sadly

Iblinkedandiamold · 31/10/2021 21:23

I just went outside to collect the box of Haribos I left outside and it's gone box and all.

It's past time Tony cleared off now, his patronising and finger wagging at the public is getting worse that so many people are no longer listening to him and deservedly so.

He should have gone after his shameful role in the cervical cancer scandal but he comes across as a power mad control freak who enjoyed being lauded as a protector during the initial lockdown but now so many people are seeing through him.

We were restricted to 2kms in the first lockdown. We're already being warned of another lockdown before Christmas.
LadyEloise1 · 01/11/2021 08:40

I remember one poster on these threads who was stopped by Gardai for being outside the limit and was fined, she was bringing her dd to a religious service that a clergyman insisted she was brought to.
I hope she appealed that fine and was let off.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 01/11/2021 10:10

Yes I remember that too @LadyEloise1 I wonder did she get it overturned.

I don't know, I think we handled it all as best we could in terms of restrictions etc and obviously our vaccine rollout has been amazing. I think it's just inevitable that this thing is going to carry on and as it's a new virus nobody really knows how it's going to end. The Delta variant is far more transmissable and no doubt there will be other variants. The experts agree that lockdowns only work as a short sharp block but we've certainly passed that point now, even Luke O'Neill was saying so. It's human nature, we can only be in lockdown for so long, or have so many lockdowns. Unless we go the China route and have it enforced so people are literally locked into their homes and fined (or worse) if they leave? I don't think any of us want that.

I think it's a combination of things - people letting their guard down because they're vaccinated, things opening up again and the Delta variant being more contagious.

I just wish we'd done more to sort out the HSE this past 2 years. It doesn't seem like we have. And now with a population of only 5 million we have waiting lists of 1 million Shock I worry more about people with undiagnosed conditions and delayed surgeries/treatments than I do about Covid. I hope to God I or nobody close to me needs any sort of medical help this winter.

I remember that lady too.. really hope she didn't have to pay the fine..

Totally agree with this . Most hospitals are so near capacity already - and it's not winter yet.

Iblinkedandiamold · 01/11/2021 13:15

I still think we were lucky with our restrictions. A
Lot of other countries had complete lockdowns where they couldn't leave the house except to get food. The police and the army in other countries were very strict.

eggandonion · 01/11/2021 16:28

Yes, i would also like to know if the poster had to pay the fine.
Im fed up witt the Weather and the dark already Sad

Radyward · 01/11/2021 16:50

Its unbelievably rampant now
I know of so many people with covid now than ever before. All vaxxed too so seriously. Its everywhere. 3500 staff out due to covid / close contact etc in hse.where i work so.many out with stress and strangely lots of lab people who actually analyse the pcrs. Just burnt out really. The elderly are living on a knife edge with stress which is tony induced. I wish nphet would just go and leave us alone but we are comtrolled by loonys who nearly salivate / weirdly want control / must #dotherightthing which is the WRONG thing

SilverGlitterBaubles · 01/11/2021 17:34

@honeyrider I really hope not, I think it would be the last straw for many people who's MH is hanging by a thread already. The blame games and finger pointing is just so divisive and add to fear and anger - it's the unvaccinated people's fault, it's the young people's fault, it's the nightclubbers fault, it's the 5-12 year old kids fault. I wish media, gov and NPHET would just stop with it all. People are mostly doing their best and don't deserve to be constantly chastised for just living.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 07/11/2021 16:21

Lovely dry weekend (where we are anyway!) it makes such a difference doesn't it.

What do we all think of Eamon Ryan re-testing and now going to Glasgow? I think it's a bit of a joke to be honest but I don't have a lot of time for him anyway so I could be biased.

I have been very productive this weekend - I can see the bottom of all our laundry baskets! is there any better feeling? Plus I made 2 cakes AND a huge batch of pizza dough. Lol I'm living the dream...

Iblinkedandiamold · 07/11/2021 17:38

Well done @lifeInAHamsterWheel. I was not that productive this weekend. I even had a nap earlier today. I only sat down for a few minutes next thing I know I am waking up from a nap.
