@halfpasteleven I'd bring the letter to your local post office to see if it's genuine. They should be able go shed more light on it for you. My dh keeps getting those fake messages on his phone re a parcel being delivered and to click on a link - the ones the Gardai have warned about. DH hasn't ordered anything online.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 05/10/2021 08:41

That does sound odd. I agree I'd take it to a post office and show them. I got similar but by text message. There was a link which took me to what looked exactly like An Post website. They only wanted €2.99 which I thought was odd and they said something like "if you don't pay further action will be taken" and i thought what further action?! Surely I just won't get my parcel!! Anyway I showed it to guy I post office and he said definitely a scam. Once I'd paid the €2.99 they'd have had my card details and go I for more I don't have much more!
So many scams now it's a minefield!

I worry for my elderly parents this winter if power cuts/ black outs are to happen.
Yes I worry for the elderly ands vulnerable. I know of a family relative, how is in her 90's and lives alone, but has alarms and monitoring systems. Everything there is an electrically cut this systems obviously don't work. This directly puts her at greater risk.

To me, the shrug of the shoulders it's going to be tough attitude, strikes me as very city focussed and from a position of wealth and privilege.

halfpasteleven · 05/10/2021 12:55

Thanks all - will bring to the Post Office and see what they make of it!

Yes this shrugging attitude - almost "it is what it is" is infuriating- power cuts in winter are not pleasant for any age group

halfpasteleven · 06/10/2021 12:37

Just an update re the letter - it was genuine and for an item I'd ordered from Amazon!
The lady at the lost office said letters are legit- it's the texts or phone calls claiming to be from An Post that aren't.

eggandonion · 06/10/2021 14:23

I was posting something to England this morning, it took ages to complete forms. For an item worth 20 euros.
Businesses must be having a really hard time with paperwork.

20 quid! Shock I have a pair of meindl boots I want to get repaired, there's a place in Lancashire (I think) that does it. But I haven't worked out how much it will cost to post them to it. Other option is to send them back to the meindl factory - but there's about a year wait on them!
eggandonion · 06/10/2021 15:06

I was sending a couple of magazines, it cost 11.20. But they had to be labelled as a gift, cost declared, signed for, label printed out. My husband sent a similar package to Germany last month, with no paperwork. He posted it on Wednesday afternoon and got a thank you email on Friday afternoon, sent from Cork to a small town.
Delays between Ireland and UK are an issue where I work.

SionnachRua · 06/10/2021 16:15

International post in general is quite slow atm, I find. I send a lot of letters and the standard is 2 weeks to/from the USA. Seems to be trending towards the 4 week mark these days.

I had something land in from Mexico last week that was sent in May Shock And another yesterday from the USA with a 3 month travel time!

123MothergotafleA · 06/10/2021 16:24

I posted an item in UK to Ireland a month ago that has yet to arrive! Its chaotic isnt it!

eggandonion · 06/10/2021 16:30

Things from the EU seem fine. One of our couriers in work had a docket telling him we owed 18p vat, and there was a collection charge of 20 euros. He kindly said he would speak to head office about it. He was embarrassed!
We have a local dressmaker who orders fabric from the UK, but can't predict how long it will take, last year in lockdown it was 3 days. She is looking at Italian suppliers.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 06/10/2021 19:12

That's mad @halfpasteleven! Did you have much to pay?

My mum posted a box to Australia 6 weeks ago and it still hasn't arrived. She's getting really worried but the guy in the post office told her it's still much slower than normal at the moment.

Is there really nobody here in Ireland who could fix your boots @sillysmiles? Our local cobbler is brilliant! I'd be tempted to try and find someone locally who could do it.

halfpasteleven · 06/10/2021 22:41

€10 @LifeInAHamsterWheel
I'd rather have kept it in my purse!

Iblinkedandiamold · 07/10/2021 07:21

I don't buy that much on Amazon anymore, postage is mad. Shein on the other hand is a completely different story. I got halloween cushion covers halloween face masks as well as clothes.

shrugshrug · 07/10/2021 08:58

What is the quality like from Shein @Iblinkedandiamold ?

SionnachRua · 07/10/2021 09:12

My golden rule on SheIn is to check reviews, particularly pictures.

Iblinkedandiamold · 07/10/2021 13:28

@shrugshrug. I find them the same as Penny's in quality.
@SionnachRua I look at the pictures too. I don't even read the reviews as I think they just review for the points.
The clothes are a bit shapeless but I find the so comfortable that I don't care.

RTÉ looking for childcare workers to speak to about hardship.

Iblinkedandiamold · 09/10/2021 15:39

What's going on, why is it so hot today. I have storage heaters and I am roasting. Have all my doors and windows open. Want to cut the lawn but I am not feeling great today. Any wonder when the weather can't make up it's mind.

Iblinkedandiamold · 11/10/2021 20:00

Budget tomorrow, not holding out any hope for me in it. No young children, not on welfare so...extra Bank Holiday?? I'd be happy with that.

halfpasteleven · 11/10/2021 21:54

Must remember to top up the car before the fuel goes up at midnight tomorrow.. that will be the biggest change for me I reckon

Iblinkedandiamold · 11/10/2021 22:03

Yeah fuel, that has shot up already. I can't believe how much of a jump in it.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 12/10/2021 12:22

The price of fuel lately is ridiculous and there's never any talk about it in the press! I paid €1.63 per litre at the weekend Shock not sure if changing to an EV will make any real difference given the warnings we've had about the price and supply of electricity!

eggandonion · 12/10/2021 14:49

We have five local petrol stations, four are the same price and one slightly more expensive. They dont seem to compete any more.

Iblinkedandiamold · 12/10/2021 17:34

Last week or maybe the week before, paid 1.41 per litre for diseal. Sunday it was 1.48.
Today I saw it had gone up to 1.52. Big jump there.
