A shiny new thread for us all to talk pure shite whilst we wait for lockdown to end Grin

I'd be ok if there was a spa, a hairdresser, and it was a country house hotel with lovely walks.
I quite liked the hotel near Dublin airport, but that was just for one night.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 10/04/2021 16:40

I'd say it's the cost that's upsetting people more than anything else. Also I'd say 2 weeks in quarantine in a hotel room isn't quite as appealing as 2 weeks at The Heritage in Laois! (I love that hotel) but at the end of the day the rules are the rules. I'm just waiting to read about some senior civil servant or CEO of somewhere or other who arrived in from somewhere on that list and didn't have to quarantine. Because in Ireland there's always that small cohort that are above the rules... (maybe I'm just feeling very grumpy today)

@MarDhea

I'd quite like 2 weeks of peace and quiet in a hotel with no kids hanging out of me, just to recover from the last year of hell...

Not with the kids, though. All 4 of us in one room would just be moving into a deeper circle of hell!

I'm trying to finish a book, and have been thinking that this would be very nice. If solo with my laptop and someone bringing me meals.
Joolsin · 10/04/2021 16:45

Passed the NCT, you'll all be glad to know. Did not wear a special outfit! Saw my brother at the mechanics for the first time since Christmas and that was just lovely. Had a good chat with a lady outside the centre while we were waiting - such a novelty nowadays to converse with a stranger 😁. So all in all, the most interesting day I've had in ages!

JaneJeffer · 10/04/2021 17:29

Fair play to Rachael Blackmore. She's unreal!

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 10/04/2021 17:48

It's amazing!! So delighted for her. Pity there were no crowds today I can imagine she'd have been deafened by the cheers.

Shay Healy has passed away. I think we should have a rendition of 'What's another year of lockdown'.

JaneJeffer · 10/04/2021 17:50

RIP Shay Healy Sad

The first female Provost in Trinity college has been appointed.

Great news.

MadamBatty · 10/04/2021 18:19

Thanks all for your kind words...you are all very kind.

Hurrah for Rachel Blackmore, fabulous role model for young women.

Carriemac · 10/04/2021 18:33

@hollyisalovelyname thanks for the shout out - I find craicnet and this thread a great lifeline when I can't travel home . DD is in college in Dublin , me and her dad and her siblings all vaccinated here in the UK but I accept we can't visit until the rules have changed . She showed me a video of Dublin out her window this morning - looked lovely .

LadyEloise · 10/04/2021 19:41

Sarahtrue11 ".....iI wonder why these people can't seem to bear two weeks in a hotel. It is a pretty easy thing to do in the grand scheme of things..."

I agree.
Rob Kearney and Jess Reddan didn't whinge when they had to do in Australia when he went to work there.

Thesagacontinues · 10/04/2021 19:48

Rachael Blackmore was fantastic today.

My DS had chosen the horse with 80 to 1 odds that led most of the race but it never stood a chance of lasting thw full distance (much to the sadness of my purse)

I felt sorry for it. The winner of the Irish National led all the way.

Can I check in? Am abroad in England, but like to keep up to date with Ireland. I'm not quite a Sasannach yet (here 6 years), but obviously we don't really get much news from the Irish here. My parents usually update me on things when I ask, but they presume that I know certain things so don't bother telling me much. My father still hasn't quite comprehended that unless I watch rte player, I don't get the Irish channels.
The best pronunciation of Micheál was on Sky News. A fella called him Mikael Martin (pronounced like Gorbachev lol). For a minute I wondered whether the Russians had invaded and we had a new leader. Wink I agree that it's disrespectful for them. I think that they do it on purpose to be honest.

My pet pet pet hate is people calling the Irish language - 'Gaelic'! It gives me the rage. I've actually tweeted Kay Burley in the past, such was the rage I had clearly too much time on my hands
The NCT test chat sounds awesome. I miss that so much here. Just being able to strike up a random conversation with someone in the queue in the post office or something. You'd be ate if you did that here lol! I never put a car through an NCT in my life. I used to buy a new banger every year and then sell it off before it went for its NCT. I got so fucking nervous about this stupid NCT. Ridiculous behaviour but I can't stand tests and the nerves. A throwback to the leaving I suppose! Imagine buying a new car every year, trawling the buy and sell, rather than just bring the thing for the test?? I'll never win the Brain of Britain that's for sure.
Condolences to the posters who have lost people. Horrible times we're living in.

Iblinkedandiamold · 10/04/2021 22:31

My parents got theirs yesterday. The 1st dose. They were meant to go Thirsday but the GP didnt get enough vaccines. Our doctor has to fight to get enough vaccines for people and I know she's not the only one. It's very sad. Although more and more young people with families are moving to the area(Many loving back after living away for many years) we still have quite an elderly population.
I'm getting annoyed with the covid deaths announcement. They put it numbers like 14 dead, 17 dead oh but only three died this month. Why bother lumping in the ones that died in jan, feb and March.
I think they should announce just announce the ones that died in April then mention Jan Feb and march after you give the total. People freak out when they see a high number of deaths.

Anyone see the undertaker on Tommy Tiernan? Great stories.

He was brilliant! Could have listened to him all night.

Welcome, @Therewereroses. That's something I love doing when I visit the UK, just starting conversations with random people. They are sometimes quite taken aback initially, particularly in urban England, but I think they like it really!!!

Is Gaelic wrong? I would call it Gaeilge myself, but I have heard other people call it Gaelic before, and if you look online there are a lot of articles about "Irish Gaelic".

It says online in a history article , "that Irish Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic both originated from the language of the Gaels. The Gaels are people who settled in Ireland and Scotland, from mainland Europe."

Can you explain why you think it is wrong?

EmeraldShamrock · 11/04/2021 00:49

Therewereroses · 11/04/2021 01:15

In the Irish language, the word for our language is Gaeilge.
In the English language, the word for our language is Irish.

Gaelic is a bit random. It's a British way of referring to Irish. I've seen them do it too with Welsh or Scottish.

I was dating an English man and he was fascinated to know that we study 'Irish'. He asked what that was! Lol.

Therewereroses · 11/04/2021 01:24

I think that maybe he thought it was a lesson on how to be Irish or something. They've literally never heard of 'Irish' as the name for our language over here. Not surprising really as it's never referred to as Irish. It's usually when press conferences are given and the Taoiseach speaks in English and Irish, Kay Burley or some Sky news presenter will tune out and say 'oh they're speaking in Gaelic now'. I don't know why it infuriates me but it does!

Sarahtrue11 · 11/04/2021 01:26

It is still correct to say Gaelic.

Oh my God, I can't be dealing with all these perceived insults against Irish people, that there are on this thread. There seems to be a theme of "the Brits are out to disrespect us"

Such an immature load of shite.
