I remember in March standing in my friend's kitchen watching Arlene saying on the news that if the schools closed, it would be for 16 weeks and thinking what??? Naively thought it would all be normal in the autumn.

Oh me too!

Sure remember she said she expected the restrictions/lockdown to be fully “long before December”

Fat chance of that happening now

hopeishere · 02/10/2020 18:04

They're already making noises about getting financial assistance if there is another full lockdown. I'd expect the numbers to go up for a few more days before hopefully levelling and going down.

Why are they so high in Derry / Strabane though??

LadyEloise · 02/10/2020 19:03

I hate to be a party pooper but the off licenses need to be shut.
No drink, no house parties.
Keep the pubs open if they follow the rules.
It's crazy.

Or
Is it the schools ?

JaneJeffer · 02/10/2020 19:04

@pinkhousesarebest NUIG students were advised to secure accommodation even though most of their lectures seem to be online for now.

eggandonion · 02/10/2020 19:33

All I can suggest is that people think crossing the border means they can do what they want, like speeding fines and parking fines can be ignored. So common sense is in short supply. Its terrible.

Chickenandrice · 03/10/2020 20:22

I am in Scotland and I just looked at Northern Ireland news. I was really shocked at the number of cases. I remember in the summer it seemed like Northern Ireland had pretty much defeated Covid. It’s so strange there is very little news coverage. I am so sorry to hear things aren’t so good now

Thanks.

Yes Northern Ireland was doing so well and now it’s gone down hill.

I hope all is well in Scotland!

Whenismumhome · 03/10/2020 21:34

@Chickenandrice actually, what I said was probably a bit stupid.

Obviously things are not well in Scotland but what I mean to say is that I hope the situation there will sort itself out soon too

Chickenandrice · 03/10/2020 21:40

Thank you. Yes it’s funny how each area has its own peaks and troughs and it’s so hard to understand what drives this. For instance how low infection rates are in the south of England,

halfpasteleven · 03/10/2020 22:21

Numbers are high tonight in ROI - 613... hard to know what is driving them up especially with two counties at level three

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 03/10/2020 22:30

Yes, halfpasteleven, they are consistently high now. It's very worrying.

Quarterback11 · 04/10/2020 00:20

Its across every county too Sad I think the 26 counties had cases today. Widespread.

Friends of friends headed out last night in an Irish city (a current hotspot, though not level 3). They'd booked 4 ×1.5 hour sessions in various establishments. Basically a 6 hour pub crawl. It's not surprising that the numbers are rising when people are still behaving so irresponsibly.
Iblinkedandiamold · 04/10/2020 12:11

It's all feeling like it's getting out of control. Deaths increasing, people in hospital increasing. If I didn't have to go to work I dont think I'd leave the house.
Something has to be done. Although reading through the levels, even if we went to l.5 schools and child care will still be open.

JaneJeffer · 04/10/2020 19:55

Apparently eight of the deaths reported yesterday were pre-September.

Iblinkedandiamold · 04/10/2020 20:30

Yep, still rising though. Although to be fair the deaths are only covid related deaths. They died with covid in their system but that was not necessarily the cause of death.
It still doesn't make me feel better about it. I'm not scared of getting it, although the recovery seems horrendous. I'm scared of getting it, but knowing I have it and passing it onto someone vulnerable.

Lipz · 04/10/2020 20:59

NPHET have sent a letter to government recommending level 5 for whole Country. ShockShock

TheKeatingFive · 04/10/2020 21:00

Ffs at NPHET’s latest recommendation.

Level 5. Have they lost their collective minds?

Lipz · 04/10/2020 21:04

A total lock down with school and creche and nurseries remaining open.... Right.... That'll work.

TheKeatingFive · 04/10/2020 21:10

So many people’s livelihoods ruined by this. My business will be making 15 people redundant if we move to level 4. I’ve no fucking idea what level 5 will mean.

I know so many cafe/restaurant owners hanging by the smallest thread already. They’ll be finished.

And all this for 20 something deaths in September and 20 currently in ICU. The country will be destroyed due to the incompetence of our health service.

LizzieAnt · 04/10/2020 21:19

I feel so very sorry for business owners at the moment, but I don't think it's fair to blame the health service. They've been practically begging people to mind themselves and others, to reduce socializing etc and, though many are doing their best, some people just won't.

TheKeatingFive · 04/10/2020 21:23

They’ve had six months to prepare extra capacity and appear to have done nada.

Keeping shutting down the country is not a viable answer.

JaneJeffer · 04/10/2020 21:29

I don't think people will stand for another full lockdown.

TheKeatingFive · 04/10/2020 21:31

No. Twitter is losing its collective shit right now.
