I'll probably still buy a few bags of fun size chocolate, they'll get used up even if nobody calls. DD always takes one to school with her as a snack and DS is a teenage boy so mainlines all food.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 12/10/2020 13:41

Also, re the Mars Bar and apple sandwiches, I asked the local vicar (who comes from NI) about them and he went all misty-eyed at the memory. Grin He also mentioned Philadelphia and sliced grape sandwiches, which I think sounds lovely. His wife is not from NI and had never heard of Mars Bar and apple sandwiches and was quite Shock at the thought.

It's an ecumenical matter, not political. The protestant traybakes threads have many uses for confectionery, and condensed milk.
I inflicted many on my dh and dd2 during lockdown.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 12/10/2020 16:37

I came across the Protestant tray bake thread before and I was amazed. I never knew the half of it. It's a culinary tradition all in itself.

I wonder if they will still dress up for Halloween in school? That's always a fun day.

thelegohooverer · 12/10/2020 17:48

reading some of the threads on mumsnet the last while about trick or treating, I’m not sure whether to be more afraid of covid or the bleached sweets Hmm After the suggestions of impaling packets of sweets on the lawn with sharp skewers how could that possibly go wrong I’m feeling very upbeat about keeping my dc at home 😂

eggandonion · 12/10/2020 18:00

I was fascinated by the sweet on a skewer idea. That would lead to a lot of work for nhs and hse .

SionnachRua · 12/10/2020 18:07

We are in mine anyway, can't see any reason not to. Although the staff might bet on how many Coronavirus related costumes appear Grin

I was impressed by the sweets on skewers people tbh. Not by the idea but definitely by their faith in humanity!

SionnachRua · 12/10/2020 18:08

Also I won't judge ye for Mars bars and apple sandwiches. I'm reliably informed by foreign DH that my love of Tayto sandwiches is revolting!

LadyEloise · 12/10/2020 18:40

Tayto sandwiches - Tayto cheese and onion crisps with white sliced pan and butter is the best !!!
You can keep your Mars bar and apple sandwiches. Hmm
Why would you waste a Mars bar by putting it with something healthy like an apple ?

eggandonion · 12/10/2020 19:01

I love a Tayto sandwich. My Dh is appalled.
The border on both sides is in a bad way at the moment.

Taytocrisps · 12/10/2020 19:20

Happy to see all the Tayto love.

Juvernia · 12/10/2020 21:23

I have never heard of Mars bar and apple sandwiches before but DH is now lost in reverie at the very notion of them.
I'm a Tayto girl through and through, but I will admit here to preferring Northern Irish Tayto over our local variety.

There I've said it.

I'll get me coat.

Zeebeezee · 12/10/2020 23:12

Ah the Tayto sandwiches, drool. When I could have them it was REAL Kerrygold butter on Brennan's White bread (which is addictive on its own), and a slice or two of extra mature white Cheddar cheese on top of the crushed (had to be crushed) Tayto.

Oh god, go way ye feckers. Nothing will satisfy me now! LOL.

Lovely thread, and hope Covid thing gets better, not looking too promising though at the moment for any of us.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 13/10/2020 09:58

Nom nom nom, Zeebeezee. Now you're talking. Don't forget a cup of Barry's tea Brew

LadyEloise · 13/10/2020 18:22

Garda checkpoint on the N11 at Bray turnoff today.
About 6 gardai there
Personally I'd prefer them to be catching real criminals.
Or breaking up house parties.
Or be on the road into Dublin from Bray later in the evening and catch the stupid drunk drivers who couldn't do without a visit to a pub and had to go to a neighbouring county to find one open.
Is Wicklow on Level 3 now ?

SionnachRua · 13/10/2020 18:34

Sure everywhere is level 3, has been for about a week.

I'd say the guards are not thrilled at being stuck out at traffic cordon. How can they possibly police county borders anyway? They have no extra powers. Just holds up traffic for no major benefit.

EarlofEggMcMuffin · 13/10/2020 19:03

Yes, I'd say they're not thrilled about it.
However, I had to take 3 journeys over the last 2 days, and passed through 7 checkpoints.
Some on M roads, some at entrances to villages.
Very respectful and, I feel, make the point. Wherever possible, we should be at home now.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 13/10/2020 20:24

Evening, all. There's a confirmed case in my kids' secondary school. It looks like the close contacts of the case are the students who were eating lunch with them, presumably because masks were off and there was little social distancing. Urgh. Hoping for the best.

7Days · 13/10/2020 20:38

Its frightening when it gets that close @IsFuzzyBeagMise

Zeebeezee · 13/10/2020 20:43

I confess I am a lurker, enjoy the banter and the information but rarely have much to add. Best of luck to you all. I'll probably never stop talking now.

Anyway I hope someone opens a new thread, because this one is entering closed phase with nearly 1,000 posts now.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 13/10/2020 20:45

For sure, @7Days. It gave me a jolt this morning.

TheKeatingFive · 13/10/2020 20:46

That’s tough fuzzy. We had the same a few weeks ago. DS wasn’t a close contact, life went on. The atmosphere was a bit funny in school for a while, but everything back to normal now. It didn’t spread thankfully.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 13/10/2020 21:29

That's good to hear, TheKeatingFive. So long as it doesn't spread. It's not in my children's year groups at least. We're all living on the edge these days.

halfpasteleven · 13/10/2020 21:37

How do you all feel about play dates after school? Went for a walk with DD and DS this evening and passed some houses that have classmates of DS . Children and parents outside ( it was a lovely sunny evening) and DS got invited in to a couple of houses.. I had to say no as I felt it was an unnecessary reason to go inside/ mix with another household. Felt sorry for DS but he was great about it. He stayed outside the wall and kept a social distance and chatted to his friends that way for a while.
He's 7 btw.
I just feel like these are unnecessary reasons to be mixing with others in a close proximity
Would love some thoughts !

LadyEloise · 13/10/2020 21:50

I agree with you @halfpasteleven
