I agree @Lipz, It is the optics of the politicians disappearing. Surely this pandemic is considered an emergency and regular rules don't apply.

MMartin doesn't inspire me with his lack of statesmanlike leadership.
All I think of is his dithering character as done by Oliver Callan.

honeyrider · 06/08/2020 22:25

Mehole Martin and Stephen Donnelly look out of their depth and don't inspire confidence.

As much as I dislike Leo and Simon Harris at least they were able to communicate with the public and inspire some confidence.

AngelaScandal · 07/08/2020 04:41

I keep saying you’d miss the caretaker govt all the same.
And I’m not a FG voter by any stretch

halfpasteleven · 07/08/2020 07:15

Have to agree that Leo and Simon were much better at communicating when all this began. MM just doesn't have the same clarity - he wasn't even sure when the next review of phase 4 would be when asked directly (on live tv!) at the press conference on Tuesday!
The rise of cases is very worrying. But understandable when people are on the move more around the country. Hard to know what will happen and it's the uncertainty that's so hard to deal with.

Iblinkedandiamold · 07/08/2020 08:11

I dont feel feel the same comfort with M.M as I felt with Leo. For example If Leo said the schools are reopening I would trust it was safe, I feel M.M is just pushing for schools to reopen regardless if it's safe or not.

Inanutshelldaze · 07/08/2020 09:06

We have had no communication from our school since the end of June. I wish they would let us know the basic plan, my DC are due back the 26th. Haven't even bought the new uniforms yet...

chartreuse · 07/08/2020 10:03

I have no ill feelings towards MM, but at the press conference the other evening Leo spoke directly after him, and the difference was in style was so stark.

I know they all have a gazillion advisors, MM needs to have a few sessions with LV's communications advisor. Leo makes you feel much more reassured that he's in control of the situation and will make the best decisions on our behalf. MM does not! I also think Simon Harris is a much better communicator than Stephen Donnelly, but maybe it's just because we were used to them.

The new numbers are worrying. In our family, we have all tried to be careful in keeping our contact groups small, but that's really difficult if you are out of the house working.

Last contact from school was that they are reopening as normal on the 31st, but a lot can happen in a week, let alone 3. We have been preparing for DC to be homeschooled a lot over the winter, I just can't see how we'll get through it any other way.

Lipz · 07/08/2020 11:38

Does anyone know in the ROI what the allowance for children playing together outdoors is.

There's 3 HUGE bouncy castles, slides, water slides in the middle of the estate, every kid is on it, there's no SD, no masks.

I know I'm a fun sponge but this is ridiculous, I've never seen so many kids, they are all from different homes and some from other estates. They are falling on top of each other too. The middle of a pandemic and numbers rising and someone hired all this stuff.

JaneJeffer · 07/08/2020 18:42

I think MM is trying too hard to emulate Leo and it's not working. He sounds like a priest with his "pause and reflect".

Finally heard from school yesterday but only to attach 53 page booklet from Department Hmm

halfpasteleven · 07/08/2020 22:10

Have to agree.. I think the fact that Norma Foley hasn't been around this week to help iron out the finer details speaks volumes ..
it's hard to have faith in the new ministers

Lazysundayafternoons · 07/08/2020 22:34

Hi all,
Rejoining the thread after a couple of months away.
Havent heard from ds school but given the updates in the last few weeks I started getting his new uniform to be ready for their return at the end of the month.
I'm still working from home. The first of the people were allowed back to the office at the beginning of July, they were spaced a min of 2m apart, they are now increasing that space further. We've been asked if anyone would like to return to the office 2 days a week from October-ish but this date will likely be pushed out with the cases going back up. I wont he volunteering to return anyway seeing as things can develop so quickly.

Popjam · 07/08/2020 23:37

@Lipz outdoor gatherings of up to 200 people are allowed but with SD etc. Having said that, research has shown the amount of cases spread outdoors seems very low.

Popjam · 07/08/2020 23:40

Flowers for all the Laois Offaly Kildare folk who were supposed to be going on holidays. How quickly things change. There's a few meat processing plants near us Confused

200 people.... sure no wonder the guards weren't interested.

They partied all day and night, they ended up bringing out tables and chairs and adults and kids partied till very late, every neighbour was out except us so I just sucked it up. Definitely no SD going on.

LadyEloise · 08/08/2020 10:00

Lipz are you in Kildare or Laois or Offaly ?

Re the community party- some people are just stupid and arrogant and think safety guidelines don't apply to them and put other, more vulnerable people, at risk. Sad

I'm in Dublin. It just doesn't make sense to me, they closed schools, we've been getting letters, emails, texts about the re opening of schools and how everyone has to wear masks, how they're going to seperate the children, one of our schools is even struggling because they are an old building with limited space and a minimum of 30 per class and they're not sure how they're going to operate, stressed principal and teachers trying to organise getting kids back but here they are at least 100 kids all on top of each other parents too.

They were out there for at least 16 hours so they were using someones house for toilets. Plus anyone walking by just stopped and got on bouncy castles etc. They had a proper street party last night with many many adults and the kids all together. Not one was SD.

I understand some are visitors to the neighbours as some cars stayed overnight and they were coming out of a couple of houses this morning which is fine, I think that's allowed? They've set the castles back up and they're currently bbq'ing.

Normally I wouldn't give a shit, I just do my own thing and keep ourselves safe but at the same time I'm nervous as it's my kids returning to school with some of them. Plus we've lost 5 people to this virus and now got word this morning 2 more have been admitted to hospital and dh got a call from the hospital to shield for a further month at least as his test results came back not good (he's serious underlying conditions) and I've a seriously disabled dd who just doesn't understand why she can't go out and join in, just sees bouncy castles and screeches, but I know these are my own issues but anyones else.

Iblinkedandiamold · 08/08/2020 18:34

Huge jump in numbers today and 50 of the cases are outside the three counties.
My county has had it's 1st case since early July. Sad
Goes to show any of us could be back in lockdown in the blink of an eye.
It's not surprising really I suppose, there seems to be a lot of traffic on the move. The town where I do my shopping was backed up with traffic today, a lot of camper vans too.

LadyEloise · 08/08/2020 21:05

Lipz that is very hard on you and your family.💐
Some people are so selfish
The acting Chief Medical Officer said that the % of cases per 100,000 people in Kildare, Laois and Offaly was way higher than in Dublin.

AngelaScandal · 09/08/2020 00:45

Doesn’t acting CMO Ronan have great hair?

AngelaScandal · 09/08/2020 00:46

@Lipz I am sorry for your troubles. That all sounds hard going.

LadyEloise · 09/08/2020 06:08

Now that you say it Bosco, he does.
I hadn't noticed. Smile

eggandonion · 09/08/2020 22:23

Dr Ronan also has nice teeth. I wonder how dr Tony is.
We don't hear much about vaccine just now.

halfpasteleven · 10/08/2020 22:16

It's worrying with the cases in the crèche in Meath and the comparison to uk figures. Hard to know how this week will go

JaneJeffer · 11/08/2020 16:05

Now there's an outbreak on a hospital ward in Naas thought to be from one of the cleaners.

7Days · 11/08/2020 16:28

Oh God.

Maybe it's kind of good though, it might be track and trace working well, and catching a lot of mild cases
