I think the main issue is putting it on with clean hands, not fiddling with it it, taking it off properly without it going near your eyes in particular, and washing your hands again.
I had no idea how much I touch my face and fiddle. I use reading glasses which I need for things like use by dates, but find it difficult to walk in them.

NewAccountForCorona · 17/05/2020 12:28

That's it, buffs! That's the name of the things I got from Amazon. The extra layer of cotton pillowcase just placed between a doubled over buff is the equivalent of having a two material mask, as recommended here

I agree about the no gapping; most people I see with disposable medical masks are wearing ones that aren't flexible, don't fit at all, and have massive gaps around the nose and side of the cheeks.

MehMehMeow · 17/05/2020 12:52

For those of you making home made masks, I ordered melt blown fabric cleaning wipes and cut them to size to use as inserts. I’ve been to,d and seem online that Melt blown fabric is the same material used in hospital masks.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 17/05/2020 12:55

What brand did you order MehMehMeow? Sone of them don’t have great reviews.

Deadringer · 17/05/2020 15:13

I can't do links on my phone but i just ordered some from an irish company called littlecomfort, don't know what they are like but reviews are good. Dh bought disposable ones yesterday and they were 2.50 each, so reusable seems sensible.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 17/05/2020 15:16

Thank you. I like the idea of ordering from a ‘local’ company and I have bit more faith than I would if ordering from further afield. waves from NI

MehMehMeow · 17/05/2020 19:26

melt blown fabric is used for surgical masks, sanitary pad coverings and commercial wipes used in labs and workshops. I read a few journal / scientific articles including some on testing the fabrics for filtering particles. I’ve made double layer masks, ordering nose bridges and elastic from AliExpress, in 400 thread cotton (old sheets). Each takes an insert of double folded melt blown wipes. I got a few samples (family member had several types at work) and did really basic home testing; I glued the fabric into cardboard frames, propped them up and positioned a mirror in front of them before using a spray bottle to spray water (replicating sneezes). I then made my best guess on which allowed the least amount of water to travel through. It’s a bit weird but I had spare time on my hands and I was worried about two family members classified essential workers who weren’t being given any protection (reception/admin workers in a healthcare setting). The best I found was ‘CERNATA K-Tex Meltblown Degreasing Wipes Boxed Roll of 250 sheets’ Each sheet gives me 4 inserts, so for us it’s good value. We wash the cotton masks and replace the inserts.

Buffs, that's the word, I use them, have since the start.

Watching Gangs of London, it's unnecessary gory and I dont mind gore usually but this is a bit much. I feel sick, so sick.

LadyEloise · 18/05/2020 16:16

I'm so glad the gardai are getting face masks.
About time.
Ridiculous that they were not given face masks and gloves if they wanted them.
They have to get quite close to drivers when stopping then at checkpoints. Almost sticking their heads in the car.
And that's just when they are dealing with the mostly law abiding citizens.

Iblinkedandiamold · 18/05/2020 22:48

It's a bit cruel opening up places on a Monday isnt it. Maybe phase 1 should've happened on a Tuesday or even a Wednesday given that shops are open 7 days a week now. Grin
Speaking of should've I've been seeing a lot more should of recently instead of should've, also aloud instead of allowed.
The woman I work with who is in her 30s sends me messages with text speak too, takes me a good 5 mins to try and understand what she is saying...I'm not even that old. In some cases it's only shorting the word by a letter or 2, why bother?
I am sleep deprived, sad and cranky today. I knew it would be a bad day when I wanted to eat chocolate at 10.30 am.

NewAccountForCorona · 19/05/2020 08:10

Have some chocolate for breakfast, and then go for a walk. I find that cheers me up immensely Grin

I think it's getting stressful now; we are simultaneously locked up at home and feeling unsafe - at least in the first couple of weeks we felt relatively safe at home, now everyone is out and about it adds another level of stress.

Blinked, is it you who hasn't seen your son for a while? Have you heard from him?

Iblinkedandiamold · 19/05/2020 10:34

Yeah that's me. He popped out to my parents house a few days ago with the baby as they have a massive garden. We had a socail distancing visit. It was really nice. We've been in contact ever since. Maybe he needed a few home truths. Grin
He's doing well anyway but we'll see what happens.

NewAccountForCorona · 19/05/2020 15:40

Oh, that's great. Maybe there is an upside to this virus thing!

Iblinkedandiamold · 19/05/2020 19:51

Today is a drinking tea day, I went to bed tired and woke up exhausted, I slept until 9.30, so unusual for me. Usually means aunt flo's on her way, she could arrive anytime between now and next week. TMI I know sorry. Blush

ReiltinDubh · 21/05/2020 11:50

I get exhausted before she arrives too Iblinked that and my bladder reduces to the size of a pea for the week. So uncomfortable!
Hole you're feeling better today Flowers

ReiltinDubh · 21/05/2020 11:52

Hope you're feeling better, not hole! Dammit the one and only time I didn't preview my message there's a typo. Typical Grin

ManorMouse · 21/05/2020 16:57

Typical

I know. I sent an email to a client last week saying "Hop your well."

As if wells don't have enough to put up with.

KanyesVest · 22/05/2020 00:35

Has anyone had any annual leave during lockdown? I had next week booked for a course I was really looking forward to but obviously it's been cancelled. I'm gutted but also need to be not in work for a free days so I'm taking it anyway. Just not entirely sure what I'll do with myself since I'm child and homeschooled out of my mind already...

Dk20 · 22/05/2020 07:54

@KanyesVest
Yes, I took a week off at the beginning of May - around the bank holiday so had 10 days off. Like you I was wondering how I'd fill every day. At the beginning of the week we chose one movie per day to watch, chose 1 new recipe to bake/cook and tried different walking routes. The week actually passed so quickly.

ReiltinDubh · 22/05/2020 08:15

Kanye'sVest I'm taking next week off. Need a break from trying to work and homeschool at the same time!
Dk20 some great ideas there. Think I'll do similar.

Iblinkedandiamold · 22/05/2020 09:59

I just emailed my employer about time in lieu I had worked up. I am different I am not working, I'm doing CPD courses and I am researching curriculum planning for next year but most of my days are free so I cant actually take time off. Hoping to get paid an extra week.

AvocaLove · 22/05/2020 10:33

There’s a special place in hell for the people who think they can avoid the travel quarantine by using loopholes in the legislation. Angry

I know of someone (a family of 5) who are relocating back to NI next month. They are travelling from a country with a high number of cases and deaths - the virus is still very prevalent there. They will also be travelling on 2 flights to get home.

They are flying into Dub and immediately coming north. They will be returning to their old house and one member of the family will be starting a new job 3 days after they return.

They will not be self isolating because the ROI rules do not apply if you are coming north of the border, and the UK rules which are expected to be in place before they fly won’t apply either because they only arrived in the UK by car and not by air, sea or rail.

They are positively gleeful at this loophole and are planning to catch up with their friends and family on their return, go shopping (to wherever is open) to restock their house with food and toys etc, and begin work immediately.

I am betting they won’t be the only ones doing this. I feel sick at the thought of who they could potentially infect.

We will NOT be seeing them for several weeks after they return and will also not be seeing anyone else who sees them.

Surely there needs to be an understanding of this and a way to close the loophole.

Iblinkedandiamold · 22/05/2020 10:51

Oh my gosh that's awful. I went for a walk one of the days, could've been yesterday or Wednesday, time/days are just a blur now. A way there were gangs of teens all on bikes hanging out together in small groups but not Social distancing. Now I dont know if they were were from the same family, so not going to bash them. as
As I was walking more and more groups were arriving on bikes. It was so strange, usually I just meet the same people over and over and the place is so quiet.

AvocaLove · 22/05/2020 10:58

We (DC & I) went for a walk yesterday and walked through a local park. It was heaving. Some people having genuinely socially distant picnics - clearly spaced out on the grass in a wide circle. Others not so much. Oh walkers stopping to chat to each other and standing right next to each other, lots of people feeding the ducks - too many to stand apart on the path, a group of young boys doing football training (probably about 10 of them - aged maybe 7-8 at most), and lots of groups of teenagers hanging about, walking in groups, cycling together.
