3luckystars I read something this morning (can't remember where) and they had interviewed man in it, who said a car with a UK reg had pulled into his drive to check their sat nav.. think he was in West Cork. So the ferries must be still going.

Luckystar1 · 09/04/2020 09:57

Lots of people in the North have UK number plates. Not that they should be driving to bloody Cork, but it might not definitely be ferries (although I don’t know either way). Very selfish whoever it is.

Iblinkedandiamold · 09/04/2020 10:18

I've just realised that tomorrow is good Friday. I wonder if my wages will go on today, if they dont it'll be Tuesday.

I should be heading to warner studios in London today to Harry Potter. Ah well at least I am Healthy.
Is there another announcement tomorrow does anyone know?
I'm starting to watch TV shows now and I'm jealous. They can go out whenever they want. It's starting to feel like it'll never end. Has it only been 4 weeks since the school closed?

AngelaScandal · 09/04/2020 10:22

Gabriel Scally just said the same - that ferries should be stopped and English travellers stopped from heading to West Cork.

Iblinkedandiamold · 09/04/2020 10:37

Everything should be stopped expect for essential supplies. It's ridiculous, we're not going to curb this if we dont.

MayFayner · 09/04/2020 10:43

ferries should be stopped and English travellers stopped from heading to West Cork.

What?! Ferry-loads of people are on their way to Cork?

3luckystars · 09/04/2020 10:49

All this has been for nothing if they ate letting people from the UK in to Ireland!!! These ferries have to stop now, the guards need to send them back, they are riddled with it.
My sister lives in the north and they are locked down, it's not northern reg cars I don't think.
These car ferries need to be stopped now, or we are going to be in hell.

@ Iblinkedandiamold Watching tv shows is like watching a wildlife programme, they are all so carefree. I listened to the 'winds of change' yesterday, that old scorpions song. Everything has changed.

peppersneezes000 · 09/04/2020 10:51

When do you all feel the schools will reopen?

eggandonion · 09/04/2020 10:52

We were in West Cork a few years ago - lots of lovely houses around the place, very few lights on at night. So many holiday homes. I'm sure owners can justify their visit - checking up after the winter, bringing all their supplies, not going out. Just like being at home...
I'm sure each and every one thinks everybody else should stay at home, or go to work in nursing homes, hospitals, delivering parcels, selling artisan food. Because some people are very special.
I'm quite special, I have flour and eggs and can make a cake.

Carriemac · 09/04/2020 10:54

@beanaseireann it was me that suggested the name craicnet
I am irrationally proud of that.
we have holiday home in Ireland and my caretaker (local woman) said its very quiet there this weekend and the locals are delighted we are all staying away. its not a dublin second home place though

LadyEloise · 09/04/2020 10:55

MayFeyner
Yes they have already gone to their second homes/ mobiles.
The Government and Guards are pleading with people not to travel but as always, there are people who think that doesn't apply to them.
I was shocked looking at the news last night at the number of cars on the road leading out of Dublin.

My friend works in a large Dublin hospital as a doctor she says things are bad- she is working so hard, she has children and knows what this virus can do, so is scared too of catching it - even though she would be meticulous with PPE. And those stupid, selfish people going off on their holidays with no thought for others. They'll be stopping en route to shop or get petrol- who knows what they'll pick up and spread.

Sanctions should be much tougher.

beanaseireann · 09/04/2020 10:59

Carriemac Take a bow 💐it's a great name. You should be rationally proud of it !!Smile
What do you mean "it's not a dublin second home place though" ?

Deadringer · 09/04/2020 11:00

Just checking in

ReiltinDubh · 09/04/2020 11:01

I just read an article on rte that ni residents who work in roi are being asked to return the pandemic payment if they got it.
I think it's appalling, they pay taxes here why shouldn't they be entitled to it.

ReiltinDubh · 09/04/2020 11:02

Also love the name Craicnet - well done Carriemac Star

ReiltinDubh · 09/04/2020 11:04

I think appealing to peoples' better nature not to travel is not enough - the ferries should have been stopped.

chartreuse · 09/04/2020 11:06

Apparently West Cork is full of British arriving to their holiday homes as usual. I heard an interview on RTÉ radio yesterday of people coming off the ferry and setting off for Cork, Kerry, etc as if it was a normal week.

I think that report during the week has been largely discredited, the data they were using was old, esp regarding icu beds which have been hugely bolstered recently. I don't think we've peaked yet from what I've read.

We live near a few beauty spots that are usually heaving in summer. Out for my walk yesterday hundreds of those metal barriers had just been delivered to one. DH saw armed guards at another 😵

I get the impression from Tony Holohan that the lockdown will be extended on Sunday, but I hope they're in a position to give us some idea on when it could be relaxed a bit. Even to go back to the initial stage when you could go to the diy/garden centre/ book shop even if it meant queuing outside.

I had to do a big shop yesterday, it was very well organised and very calm in the shop but so tense. I'd give anything for a trip to Cornelscourt but I suspect the guards would stop me and send me to the local Tesco!

Carriemac · 09/04/2020 11:08

I meant where we have our house in west cork is a cork second home place, only a handful of dubs go there as its not 'fashionable" our caretaker works in the local supermarket so has her finger on the pulse and says the reports of an influx of Uk holidaymakers are rubbish, just the usual anti brit propaganda.

Carriemac · 09/04/2020 11:10

But further west has the usual 'sailing' Dubs already ensconced

chartreuse · 09/04/2020 11:11

We have a holiday house in Donegal, wouldn't dream of going near it now, but apparently it's jammers up there with Northerners.

3luckystars · 09/04/2020 11:14

Good.

September for schools at the earliest. That's provided the car ferry stories are untrue, if there are English people coming here on holidays then who knows when we will get our lives back. Some will never if we end up going like the UK.
I was ok until I read that. People are moving this virus and it's a killer.

beanaseireann · 09/04/2020 11:15

I thought you might be in the UK Carriemac. Smile

Chartreuse I may be wrong but I understood from a radio show yesterday- think it was Ivan Yeats on Newstalk that you can travel by car to a supermarket further than the two kilometres. Many people live more than 2 km from supermarkets and pharmacies.

BorrestGump · 09/04/2020 11:46

Yes, ferries are still running as are cargo planes. How else are the supermarkets full?!

Those in the south east: what is the local reaction to holiday homes filling up? I'm in the West and locals are turning on those locals who object! It's become quite nasty. Presumably the holiday home owners are oblivious of this spat!

Lipz · 09/04/2020 11:53

Thank you all for the advice and for not minding me having a rant about neighbours gathering and bbq. This situation is making me very bitter. Glad to hear that most are following rules. It's just my donkey neighbours. Never thought I would see the day where I'm glad to see rain forecast. Sad isn't it. Thanks again

chartreuse · 09/04/2020 11:57

www.irishtimes.com/news/health/coronavirus-medics-concerned-at-prospect-of-surge-in-critically-ill-patients-in-coming-days-1.4224858?mode=amp

Surge expected soon plus bumper to bumper traffic on N11

Thanks @beanaseireann, I wonder does that apply if you have to pass several other supermarkets on the way? I'll be good, I did a huge shop yesterday in hope I won't have to go again for at least 10 days.
