@NewAccountForCorona, I missed your question about face masks earlier.

If you're still interested, here is how I made mine:
Cut a piece of old sheet, 16x7 inches.
Fold it to make a double thickness rectangle 8x7.
Seam the short ends, leaving a gap of about 2 inches in the middle.
Double stitch at both sides of this gap to prevent unraveling.
Lay the piece flat with the seam you've just made between 1 and 2 inches from the top.
Seam at each side to close up the piece. *Sew close to the edge of the fabric.
Using the gap, turn the mask right side in.
Turn it seam and gap side up.
Take each side and fold in 1 cm toward the gap to form two long hems.
Sew each hem down.
Leave the hems open at the top.
Attach a small safety pin to an old shoelace or a ribbon or some other cord that is at least 24 inches long, preferably longer.
Thread the lace through the side hem using the safety pin, beginning at the bottom, either side, doesn't matter which.
It will come up at the top Smile.
Pull it up and thread it down the other hem.
You will have a loop at the top and two loose ends at the bottom.
Put the loop over your head and pull so the mask fits across the top of your nose, gap and hem side in.
Pull the loose ends so that the mask gathers at the sides.
You may have to manually bunch up the mask at the sides so that it curves around under your chin.
Use the loose ends of the lace to tie around the back of your neck.
You can insert a paper coffee filter into the little gap for an extra layer.
Remove the coffee filter before washing the mask.

Warning - this mask does not look one bit cool made from a plain white sheet. However, DS reasons that with sunglasses on nobody will recognise him.

I made a prototype earlier from a pillow case. It's actually ok. I am considering an interlining from a quilted mattress cover, partly because I am going to deelastic it.

Tommorrowsanewday · 14/05/2020 21:28

For anyone interested in making your own masks, you may find this useful. Hope it posts ok.
I can’t sew to save myself. DH has ordered masks but they won’t arrive until late June.
We have a few throwaway ones which will hopefully tide us over until they arrive.

They say dried baby wipes or jay clothes are also useable for liners.

eggandonion · 14/05/2020 21:57

Those are straightforward instructions, thanks Tomorrow. The washable ones may be more comfortable than the throwaway. I wonder if they'll be compulsory?
Apparently one hospital underreported cases by at least 200. Tony is cross.

Tommorrowsanewday · 14/05/2020 22:22

Egg, DH has been trying to encourage me to wear one doing the shopping. So far I’ve not used them but I’d definitely prefer the washable ones.
There’s loads of sewers making their own here but I can just about manage a button.

I think they’ll be advisory here if some of the restrictions are relaxed in the future.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 14/05/2020 22:30

I’ve only been to the shops once, in about 10 weeks and I wire one of the proper masks. I would advise posters to make sure they take their coats off and put them into a bag, as I was sheltered by the time I left. A menopausal woman in a coat, hat and mask is not a good combination. 🥵 The sweat was lashing off me!

Tommorrowsanewday · 14/05/2020 22:54

TOtally, good advice, thank you.
I have taken to doing my shopping at 6.30 am. One of the rare pluses of being menopausal atm is the insomnia. Every cloud eh 😬

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 14/05/2020 23:07

There are lots of masks here for different levels of ability. I've just asked DH if he wants one for going to Dunnes, he says only if the Govt advise it. I have some kittens and hearts fabric that might be just the biz for him. Grin

Iblinkedandiamold · 15/05/2020 00:01

I see their Van's driving around and it always makes me laugh.
You'd think I'd be over it by now. Drove by the shop once with teenage DS in the car. He cracked up laughing.
I also always laugh at Corrie too when they say some crime happened on Balaclava terrace. Again, it's been years, you'd think I'd be over it

LadyEloise · 15/05/2020 09:01

What hospital under reported by 200 cases
eggandonion ?

eggandonion · 15/05/2020 09:08

They haven't said which hospital underreported. I saw places in the south east mentioned, because it had consistently low levels, I'm sure we will find out. This is Ireland!

YoungsterIwish · 15/05/2020 11:45

Any clarity on this? (ROI)

"It will also be possible to meet up to four friends and family from other households outdoors while maintaining strict social distancing"

If its me and my 2 kids...can we only meet one other person? Total group size of 4?

Or us + up to 4 other people?

eggandonion · 15/05/2020 11:50

I think Leo will reveal more later!
My neighbour has two toddlers with scooters and an au pair from Spain who is LOUD. She is on her phone a lot, or else on a bench with her au pair friend. They have four kids to mind, between them. They scoot around together, hit each other lift each other up and generally be toddlers. Every so often there is a LOUD yell.
I have no idea how pre school can work, toddlers share things and magnetically attract, fall over and need picked up.

YoungsterIwish · 15/05/2020 13:38

@LadyEloise Just seen on the news now it was the Mater in Dublin that underreported cases.

Strange as they had been reporting all along afaik

eggandonion · 15/05/2020 14:03

Were they not the first place to take covid patients? It sounds like an IT issue or clerical oversight?

LadyEloise · 15/05/2020 14:26

YoungsterIwish
So i heard, but the Mater has been giving their numbers. They had the highest number of Covid19 cases at times.
Odd Hmm

NewAccountForCorona · 15/05/2020 15:02

I wonder if it could be a Mater/Mater Private issue? Maybe only one was counted.

Youngster, I think they are saying four to stop the type of confusion that has arisen in the UK. I don't suppose you would get arrested if you and your children met up with your parents, for example; they just don't want bigger groups with everyone only meeting "four" people from four other households, together with the four they already live with. That would mean entire households mixing.

Personally I think "four" is to allow golf Grin

ManorMouse · 15/05/2020 15:27

It appears to be staff who contracted Covid 19 who were not added to the figures.

It is understood the cases in question relate to healthcare workers at the hospital who would be assessed by the hospital's occupational health department. It is understood positive cases in healthcare workers in the hospital are notified to the HSE separately to cases involving patients.

LadyEloise · 15/05/2020 17:07

My heart goes out to the meat factory workers who test positive for Covid19.
They are not well paid, many living in very cramped conditions. If and when they get sick it would be very difficult if not impossible for them to self isolate in a crowded house.
Shame on the meat factory owners/ management as human beings.---- Sad
So many of them are very wealthy on the backs of their employees and farmers.

NewAccountForCorona · 15/05/2020 18:42

I've just watched the latest update, and am vaguely amused by the fact that Ikea are obviously going bonkers about the hardware/homeware situation.

I feel for the meat factory workers too; they have been carrying on in a very difficult job throughout and aren't well paid at the best of times. Maybe this will give everyone a bit of a kick up the arse in relation to where our food comes from.

LadyEloise · 15/05/2020 19:00

Some Liveline callers very upset re Dunnes and M&S selling clothes/ homeware etc alongside their food shops when Penneys and smaller businesses have had to remain shut.
I can't say I blame them.
I'd love a wander to Dunnes or M&S but it's too far and not in the spirit of things.
A friend of a friend died today of Covid19 Sad

NewAccountForCorona · 15/05/2020 23:12

I suppose they are trying to keep most things shut. Tesco sells clothes as well, and a fair amount of home/garden stuff. There would be no way to cordon off the food areas only.

I think at this stage we all know someone who has died Sad. I know three people, all younger than me, who have been in ICU but are now home and well, which is good.

Iblinkedandiamold · 16/05/2020 00:04

People do need clothes though. Children are still growing and sometimes on line sizes aren't what you thought. Like something 6-9 months say might only fit a 3 month old. You know what I mean. So dunnes and Tesco clothes being open never bothered me.
Even the spell of good weather we had, some people might not have light clothing.
As someone said on the radio, clothing is essential, fashion isnt.

Iblinkedandiamold · 16/05/2020 00:06

Thankfully I do not know anyone who died and I only know one person who it and recovered and I dont even know that person well, he's just the father of someone I used to know years ago. Wasnt even friends with them.

eggandonion · 16/05/2020 00:12

Dunnes is the only place within a 5km radius here which sells children's shoes. A lot of things like mops and brushes are in their homeware section. Also slippers, I need new slippers as my Christmas ones aree worn out, I hardly wear shoes now!
