mathanxiety, what "pattern" did you use? I attempted a couple of the no sew ones from youtube, but ds looked at them as though I was trying to poison him (or kill him with embarrassment), so i gave up.

Iblinkedandiamold · 27/04/2020 10:49

Check me out, run done and lawn cut all before 10.30n I need to document this, it'll never happen again. Grin
Love the mask pictures I also hope that guy washed the shorts. Grin

eggandonion · 27/04/2020 10:52

I think the mask made out of a sock that I saw last week might be what I'll do, and get rid of the odd sock collection at the same time. It doesn't need elastic, which is good as I suspect an elastic shortage is around the corner. I might have to use old bra straps, knicker elastic being a thing of the past.
I forgot to quarantine the post today.

NewAccountForCorona · 27/04/2020 11:03

I tried to get elastic yesterday - can't find any in Ireland at all, and Amazon doesn't seem to have any for delivery to Ireland. Not that I'd be able to do anything with it, my sewing kit is currently at my parents' house.

I do have some old bra straps since I've given up on bra wearing

eggandonion · 27/04/2020 11:08

Old tights might work, it is time to get creative! But if masks are going to be compulsory, we need access to masks that would definitely work, or to be given instructions on making them and some EU standard elastic. And if we have to wear disposable masks, we need to be educated in how to get rid of them. Which will keep rte presenters busy for weeks!

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 27/04/2020 11:46

Knicker elastic might work or if you’ve any old fitted sheets that you can trim the elasticated bit off. The elastic strings that are sometimes in the ankle and waist bit of jogging trousers.

eggandonion · 27/04/2020 11:58

I think though that fresh elastic would work better than improvised - my mother was a young adult in wartime, and was of the make do and mend school of thought. I find it difficult to throw things away, so I'm sure I have stuff that would do - just think fresh elastic is more elasticy than old pants!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 27/04/2020 13:21

You could always make ties instead of elastic.

Inniu · 27/04/2020 13:51

Old tights cut across the legs to give rings are meant to work well.

My local quite small Tesco still have elastic in the random stuff area that has thinks like needles and lint rollers.

eggandonion · 27/04/2020 14:04

The glamour!

Iblinkedandiamold · 27/04/2020 14:14

Does anyone else think that concerts rescheduling for July is a tad optimistic? I dont think anything like that will go ahead until a vaccine is ready, even if they are under 5000 people.

Iblinkedandiamold · 27/04/2020 14:15

Sorry that meant to be rescheduling for October not July.

NewAccountForCorona · 27/04/2020 14:23

I suppose they have to take a guess. They reschedule means they don't have to refund (yet anyway). It would cost an awful lot to individually refund everyone; this way they can keep the money and reassess at the end of the summer.

I would think by October most younger people will be fed up and willing to take the risk, depending on whether or not we have a second wave when we are allowed out.

Dk20 · 27/04/2020 16:42

Yeah I agree @Iblinkedandiamold
I think it's just a way of not refunding the money for as long as they can in the hope that some things will go ahead at a later late.
On the other side, I had booked tickets for a grand prix in September in Europe and have had my money returned for that without asking. It hasnt been confirmed whether the race will go ahead, it hasnt yet been cancelled but I think if it does go ahead, they wont be allowing fans.

Re elastic.
A woman rang Joe Duffy looking for "knicker elastic" to make masks, a couple of weeks back.
He mentioned last week that they had loads in the radio programmes office. You could check that out.

eggandonion · 27/04/2020 19:35

Why would they have a stockpile of elastic? I might call Joe.

Iblinkedandiamold · 27/04/2020 19:59

Just saw on a news site that dogs may suffer real heartbreak when ths lockdown finishes. Poor poor dogs and their big hearts. Sad

NewAccountForCorona · 27/04/2020 20:07

I was thinking that some small children might be devastated when they go back to childcare/school/creche, I never thought of dogs being suddenly left alone.

We need a countrywide drive to make masks. Maybe match older people who can sew up with younger people who can shop Grin

Inniu · 27/04/2020 20:14

I used a tie mask rather than an elastic one today when shopping, it felt way more secure. I didn’t have the desire to “fix” it at all.

LadyEloise · 27/04/2020 20:27

eggandonion
He just muttered they had given what was needed to the woman and had loads left over if anyone was in need of it.

eggandonion · 27/04/2020 20:35

Was it a mask or knickers necessity? Our dog has had somebody at home for weeks, he's usually home alone for three hours a day.
Restarting day care will be difficult too.
I thought a tie mask would be more fiddly, that's interesting.

LadyEloise · 27/04/2020 21:27

The lady looking for the elastic was making masks for health workers i think, eggandonion.

On BBC World News a doctor was saying obesity and a bad diet of processed "food" were key issues in those having difficulties with Covid19. He put the fear of God into me. I almost threw out the biscuits. Seriously though I will be more careful diet wise.

The Guardian had a piece today that "the NHS warns of a new illness in children that may be linked to Coronavirus." Sad

chartreuse · 27/04/2020 21:44

I've made a few masks (need different colours/patterns to go with outfits 😂)

Ties made with ribbon or bias binding are much more comfortable than elastic

If you're not the sewing type lots of crafty people are making them, maybe look on Instagram there are loads there. I know one account, fortunes antiques I think, has some in lovely chintz prints and plain fabrics. She's in Dublin/Bray I think so post would be quick.

There's also a great tutorial for making a mask out of a t shirt, part of the sleeve forms the tie, it's very clever and easy to do. I'm sure it must be on YouTube. You need zero crafting ability to make it.

If you are making your own the fabric needs to be quite heavy, hold it up to the light, you shouldn't be able to see light through it. If your fabric is light, double it over.

You need to take them off carefully and wash after wearing. I guess Ryan Tubridy will be teaching us how on the late late soon. Remember those innocent times when he showed us how to wash our hands? Seems like a lifetime ago!

eggandonion · 27/04/2020 21:55

I'm eyeing up various skirts, tshirts, pillow cases....
I was wondering if a tshirt body made into a tube would work, my daughter is horrified by my craft ideas.

The top one in this link is the one I was thinking of
