That's not surprising

LadyEloise · 15/04/2020 13:05

I think Micheáil Martin wants the Taoiseach job soooo much.
Personally I don't think he should get it.
People have such short memories - but I remember he was in those disasterous FF governments that destroyed the country.
He can fottfsofatfosm - that well known Mumsnet term Smile

honeyrider · 15/04/2020 13:27

Mehole Martin is only interested in being Taoiseach, his sense of entitlement is breathtaking.

ManorMouse · 15/04/2020 13:57

My dh vaguely knows Micheal Martin, he is pleasant enough but no fun.

Our paths used to cross many years ago when he was starting out in politics and that would be my take on him as well. He was unfailingly polite but you couldn't get any sort of a conversation out of him.

Funnily enough but I used to meet Simon Coveney as well back in day although we were both children at the time. I come from the same neck of the woods as him and our fathers knew one another.

LadyEloise · 15/04/2020 14:09

ManorMouse
You must be " posh Cork " so. Smile
Weren't the Coveneys posh Cork, like the Barrys and the Loves.
Merchant princes ???

Iblinkedandiamold · 15/04/2020 14:40

I'm really craving a cuppa but it's too darn hot. I'm not a fan of heat. My mum thinks it's because I got really badly sunburnt when I was 16 in Spain. I think it's more because I'm not used to it. 😂
I'm hiding from the sun inside with all the windows and the back door open.

eggandonion · 15/04/2020 14:42

Very posh Cork. He has a stammer which he covers well, but you know when he's tired as it's more obvious.

Apileofballyhoo · 15/04/2020 14:58

My DB knew him SC vaguely years ago and thought he was thick according to my DM - but I think it must have been thick ignorant rather than thick stupid because he certainly doesn't seem stupid to me, the opposite. I just told DH according to here SC is practically in a bunker and he thought a real bunker and got all excited that Ireland has a security bunker...

eggandonion · 15/04/2020 15:11

I don't think he is a brilliant brainbox, but he spent years as an MEP before becoming a TD. I think he is pleasant, knows a lot of people, seems to be a good listener and negotiator, doesn't seem to lose his temper. And has supported Leo which can't be easy having lost out to him.

Inniu · 15/04/2020 15:42

I looked at a house in Ranelagh years ago that had a wwII air raid shelter I ask sure there must be a few bunkers from the Cold War.

Apileofballyhoo · 15/04/2020 16:21

He seems well able to say what he means without saying it mean - very diplomatic. I like listening to him.

Barbararara · 15/04/2020 16:27

I agree that Martin only wants to be Taoiseach but I’d have said the exact same thing about Leo. I had dealings with him when he was minister for transport and he was a great man for showing up for the photo op and the speeches but it was AK47 who was junior minister at the time who put in the work. I had very little respect for Leo until this but he’s absolutely risen to meet the crisis. I hope he stays put but I don’t think he will. If I were Martin I’d leave him be for now, rather than trying to follow a class act. But Martin hasn’t much subtlety to him.
I knew Coveney’s mother for a while. Lovely woman. Never met him though.

Barbararara · 15/04/2020 16:29

I’d love a bunker! We were planning an extension before this kicked off and I hadn’t managed to convinced dh of the need for a secret bunker/ hidden passage/ villain’s lair.

LightACandleHoney · 15/04/2020 16:52

Lockdown in NI extended until May 9th. Not a surprise but the timing of the announcement is - Arlene announced it before anything has come from the UK government. This feels like a small positive - that the eejits at Stormont are actually thinking for themselves and thinking whole-island response rather than just waiting for Westminster to speak and then following suit

LadyEloise · 15/04/2020 16:54

Who is AK47 ?

Inniu · 15/04/2020 17:09

AK47 is Alan Kelly of Labour. Possibly because he shoots his mouth off!

LadyEloise · 15/04/2020 17:12

Thanks Inniu.

7Days · 15/04/2020 17:49

I've met AK through SIL's family a couple of times. Acts the Big Shot - though this was some years back. Maybe he has mellowed

LadyEloise · 15/04/2020 17:58

Isn't his brother a " big shot" in America ?
Didn't he fall asleep at some big match in the States where tickets were like gold dust. Bigger than the All Ireland Smile

LadyEloise · 15/04/2020 18:00

Twas all over Twitter or Facebook.
They made a holy show of him. Smile

NewAccountForCorona · 15/04/2020 18:25

Ohh, that's good about NI lockdown. I hope that means that Ireland and NI can co-ordinate return to (gradual) normality.

Micheal Martin is an eejit if he sacks Leo as Taoiseach at this time. Better to do shared Taoiseach-ness, and let Leo do the first bit, that way things can stay the same for the moment.

I don't know any politicians personally; not that it seems like I'm missing much Grin

eggandonion · 15/04/2020 19:41

This is not a good time to be in charge, Michael was out of the way in 2008. He has also experience of the loss of two children though, so has a bit of real life experience.
I know Simon coveneys mum slightly too, she is a lovely woman I agree, and also her husband.

Blogdog · 15/04/2020 21:41

I looked at a house in Ranelagh years ago that had a wwII air raid shelter

@inniu Is that on Sandford Road? I think I know it.

Iblinkedandiamold · 15/04/2020 22:56

I lived in Ranelagh for years and never knew there was a house there with a shelter. That's crazy. Very historic too.

EarlofEggMcMuffin · 15/04/2020 23:07

eggandonion, I dont know where I've been living but I didn't know that Michéal Martin & his wife, had buried 2 children.

Much respect to any parent who picks themselves up after that horrendous experience.
