One child was ill for a while, and died in great Ormond street I think, and one baby was a sudden infant death. So a different sort of experience of health services, but life experience of a different type.

Inniu · 15/04/2020 23:52

@blogdog yes it is

JaneJeffer · 15/04/2020 23:56

These two should be locked up www.thejournal.ie/odoherty-waters-covid-19-legislation-high-court-5075234-Apr2020/ fecking gobshites

NewAccountForCorona · 15/04/2020 23:59

ffs, there's always one (or two) isn't there? At least they are representing themselves, they haven't (yet) managed to get some money-loving lawyer on side.

That's sad about Micheal Martin's children, I didn't know that Sad

EarlofEggMcMuffin · 16/04/2020 00:01

JaneJeffer that was my initial reaction also.

But I was thinking further about it, and thought that it is great that I live in a country where the government can be challenged when they enact more powers for the Gardaí.
There's no sneaking in an agenda to take away from people's liberties.

So, all in all, I think it is good that the powers that be see that they are being watched and challenged.

It would be so easy to bring in legislation that reduces peoples freedom in the name of "the greater good" and then keep those limitations long after Covid has gone.

honeyrider · 16/04/2020 01:58

I think they've put in a sunset clause to limit the time frame for the garda powers.

AK47 was hellbent on bringing in the water charges because he was lining it up for his brother to swoop in and buy Irish Water when it was privatised. His brother has been financing Alan's electoral campaigns. AK has said he loves the power of politics - no shit Sherlock that's obvious he's power mad.

Iblinkedandiamold · 16/04/2020 10:02

I agree it's good that the government can be challenged like that, reading the article still made my blood boil in a "how dare they" sort of way.

Iblinkedandiamold · 16/04/2020 10:24

I made pancake batter last night and woke up this morning really excited to have pancakes, sausage and rashers for breakfast. This is what my life has become now. 😂😂

NewAccountForCorona · 16/04/2020 10:49

I've no problem living in a country where the government can be challenged, but really, now? Haven't they something better they could do with their time.

Like eating pancakes perhaps. Yum. I'm making banana bread later - does anyone have a good recipe? I'm surrounded by rotten bananas. They seem to go direct from fluorescent green to completely brown these days.

eggandonion · 16/04/2020 10:58

I keep trying recipes based around random things that are going off, and deciding not to make 'that' again. Pancakes are real comfort food, if I do them I call them brunch.
I am loving the Utopian paradise Leo and Micheal envisage for me, can't wait. My ds is not so sure we can afford everything, he's a spoilsport.

Carriemac · 16/04/2020 11:10

So sad to see those two healthcare workers dying in Kilkenny - it's our local
Hospital (to my family in Ireland) so scary that it's happening so close to home. Their poor families.

eggandonion · 16/04/2020 11:21

Indeed it is really sad to see people die in the line of duty. And puts our moans into perspective.

AngelaScandal · 16/04/2020 11:29

That’s so sad about MM’s children. I hadn’t realised they had lost a baby as well. I remember Leana’s passing as I was working near GOSH at the time

eggandonion · 16/04/2020 11:38

I suppose it is good for us to remember that politicians are human...apparently Arlene rang MaryLou when she was ill.
I'm not sure about Donald Trump, he doesn't seem to have learned life lessons.

LadyEloise · 16/04/2020 11:48

I am so sad that two healthcare workers have died. Did St. Lukes not have the necessary PPE ?
Nine residents at St. Fintan's Hospital Portlaoise died over the weekend.

When will this nightmare end?
If we go back to normal will there be a second phase.

How can we have 90 deaths per million people and China only have 2 deaths per million according to Worldometer

Inniu · 16/04/2020 11:52

Lady Eloise I think a lot of people think that China is lying about its figures but also with a billion people if they outbreak is fairly much in one area you will have a lower rate of death per head than if you have 4 million people and about half of them live in the area with the biggest outbreak.

7Days · 16/04/2020 11:53

I am at the stage of absolutely hating conspiracy theories. But there does seem to respectable voices saying China underplayed their numbers. I think it was Washington post that sent a reporter over.
I dont know what is happening here. There is a variation in the way countries are counting deaths.
If you get a heart attack but also have the virus in your system, do you fall under covid or cardiac casualties?

Barbararara · 16/04/2020 11:58

Ah now you’ve given me a craving for pancakes!

Iblinkedandiamold · 16/04/2020 12:16

They were worth the calories. Grin
I just read about the health workers, it's very sad.
I also remember about M.M's daughter but didnt know about the baby before that. That's really awful. So sad.
I think here if you have Covid in the system at the time of death that's what you died of as far as i know. A lot of other countries aren't recording it that way, some will report that they died with Covid in their system.

3luckystars · 16/04/2020 13:00

I am just looking at the recover rates and something is not adding up.

I'm starting to think that 20% get no symptoms. And its 50/50 recovery then with the remainder.

Why are the recovery rates so low?

EarlofEggMcMuffin · 16/04/2020 13:01

Ah honeyrider thanks- I didn't realise that there was a sunset clause, that's good to know.

NewAccount this is probably the nicest and easiest banana bread I've made. Perfect for using up the Easter chocolate.

EarlofEggMcMuffin · 16/04/2020 13:06

Just like several have said, I'm really sad for the families of the staff in Kilkenny who have passed away due to meeting Corona at work.

Having read about it this morning, you'd have to be very brave to go to work this morning.

I'm not a big fan of the "heroes" idea about our healthcare workers...there's something a bit mawkish about it.
But, I can still see that it would take it out of you, if you were heading back into St Luke's for work.

Iblinkedandiamold · 16/04/2020 13:59

Speaking of health care staff, my mum told me yesterday that there was a woman on the radio, (prob joe) she'd been queuing to get into a shop for about 2 hours. Some woman walked to the front of the queue, showed a paper and walked in. When the radio woman questioned the guard she was told, she's a health care worker, the woman was annoyed because this lady was' just' doing her shopping as in not shopping for other staff or a patient etc.
How selfish is that. That person who "skipped" the queue was probably just off shift or going to start a shift. I hope the woman on the radio got a roasting.

eggandonion · 16/04/2020 14:12

I keep meaning to find that Joe Duffy thing to listen back - it was trending on Twitter. Apparently she drones on and on and on. I love a good Liveline!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 16/04/2020 14:24

Newaccount I make a version of Derval O'Rourke's banana biscuits with old bananas. I puree one or two bananas in the smoothie maker. Put them into a bowl and keep adding oats until it doesn't look wet anymore (not an exact science). Stir in some chocolate chips/raisins/chopped dried fruit. Make the mixture into ping-pong sized balls and bake in the oven (around 180C) until they look brown and smell of bananas.
