Coronavirus in Ireland/N Ireland

The first case of Coronavirus has been confirmed in Northern Ireland.
A passenger travelled from Italy to the North via Dublin.
I don't know how we will cope in the Republic if we have large numbers ill with the virus as our health service is already at breaking point.

I did my own hi lights many moons ago after a trip to Sally’s beauty supplies and some strips of tin foil. They came out amazingly well. The second go did not go well. Grin beginners luck. Will not be attempting it during lockdown.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 04/04/2020 14:10

My DH's hair loss has noticeable accelerated since lockdown. Depending on how long this lasts he might never need to go to the barbers again. Grin

I went to the supermarket this morning and managed to snag a box of hair dye, delighted with myself. And only 6.99 on offer!

Have to say the supermarket was brilliant, boxes of gloves and hand sanitizer (well taped down!) on a table by the door, then a one way traffic system inside. So I got my stuff, went up to pay, massive plexiglass screen going up to about 6ft, and the cashier said "oh hold on, I have to change my gloves" before she'd serve me.

Then I could discard my gloves and gel my hands on the way out.

That was as good as I've seen it so far.

DH is so desperate for a haircut he's asked me to do it for him. Brave man. The clippers are charging as we speak.

Re the BCG, my three were born in the UK and didn't have it. We were advised to get it done when we moved to ROI in the late 90s.

LightACandleHoney · 04/04/2020 16:20

That’s interesting about the BCG - I hadn’t heard that. Is there a link to the info?

3 of my 4 DC got BCGs at birth. It came off the childhood vaccination list in the UK in 2005 and became a travel vaccine only.

They started a programme however whereby newborns considered “at risk” were offered it at birth. Those at risk are anyone with a parent or grandparent from an “at risk country”, or anyone who is planning to live in an “at risk” country for 3 months or more. The list of at risk countries is pretty long. (At the time I actually think London was listed as an at risk place)

My eldest who was born in 2005 missed the newborn option, but my three younger ones all got it because my FIL was born in an at risk country. He moved to the UK when he was a child and has only been back to his home country once since then, and that was about 30 years ago, so my DC are in no way “at risk”, but we figured it was worth getting while they wouldn’t remember it.

I can never do links - but google irish times bcg and you should find it? I don't know if it is behind the paywall though.
It's a discussion not a definite,, but Luke O'Neill is the man who does all the immunology stuff, so it is of interest.

ILikTheBred · 04/04/2020 17:01

Irish Times Link. It’s been reported fairly widely.

eggandonion · 04/04/2020 17:04

Thanks!

LightACandleHoney · 04/04/2020 17:05

Thank you

Galwaygirl · 04/04/2020 17:11

Just saw a photo the Gardai posted at the bottom of Grafton street and the whole street is empty, people are listening,

LaurieMarlow · 04/04/2020 17:14

I was on grafton street earlier today. It’s a ghost town.

LadyEloise · 04/04/2020 17:34

eggandonion I love listening to Luke O'Neill. He's on Newstalk radio and just makes Science and scientific matters so intersting and easily understood

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 04/04/2020 17:36

I'm with you, LadyEloise, Luke O'Neill could tell me to jump off a cliff and I'd trust him. I met him once and was completely star struck 😂

LadyEloise · 04/04/2020 17:50

Glad I'm not the only one with the Luke love. But you actually met him !!!
B*tch.
Smile

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 04/04/2020 18:27

My brother finished his job yesterday and had to drive into town (Dublin) to return his work laptop. It was so empty that he could park on the street right outside the office. He was stopped by the Gardai to check where he was going and why, but they were happy enough with his answer and let him continue.

He had his leaving do on Zoom. Grin

eggandonion · 04/04/2020 19:33

He's an excellent communicator. I am impressed with all the medical and science people, they are working so hard. They are also good at explaining. I think we are very lucky to have them, they are calming.
And when we start to go back to normal we will have celebrity economists again! I suppose we have brexit too...

Iblinkedandiamold · 04/04/2020 20:31

Yes I think everyone is very reassuring, we know what is going on (I think) they are very honestly saying that it'll take time. Not telling us that everything is under control and we'll be up and running by Easter.
@manormouse I cut my sons hair on more than one occasion, only once did it go okay and I basically scalped him.
So glad he doesn't live at home anymore although I am a bit lonely these days at least I'm not being eaten outta house and home.
There are no guards around here at all that I can see

I went to tesco today, they are on my letting a few in at a time. If was so peaceful shopping.
In Lidl it was a free for all. It was busy, but not the usual Saturday morning busy. People are staying at home

Barbararara · 04/04/2020 21:08

I’m thinking I should cut the hair now and get a bit of practice in before they’ll be seen in public with my efforts.

Iblinkedandiamold · 04/04/2020 21:23

I was just thinking, after this is all over I'll be an hour back in work and I'll be counting the days till the next break. Grin

ManorMouse · 04/04/2020 21:33

I'm only 15 minutes walk from my nearest Aldi so I've been staying with them for the most part. I had to go to Tesco during the week for cat food and it was a mixed bag.

Queuing was fine on the way in but Christ Almighty! the amount of fecking eejits coming out who just barged through those queuing to get in. One gobshite went between the wall and the queue with a whole empty space next to him and we scattering in all directions to get out of his way. The culprits were middle-aged men for the most part and not a full shopping bag on any of them.

At least I loaded up on enough cat food that I don't have to go again for a couple of weeks.

HorseOutside · 04/04/2020 21:45

Well, I did himself's hair and he's happy enough. Phew!

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 04/04/2020 22:40
