Coronavirus in Ireland/N Ireland

beanaseireann · 27/02/2020 19:56

The first case of Coronavirus has been confirmed in Northern Ireland.
A passenger travelled from Italy to the North via Dublin.
I don't know how we will cope in the Republic if we have large numbers ill with the virus as our health service is already at breaking point.

Anyone else get messages from their schools saying schools reopen 20th April ?

Lipz · 03/04/2020 14:03

Got through to someone from the school. It was an automated message they forgot to stop...

buckeejit · 03/04/2020 14:08

Phew, that's weird. I wouldn't expect them to open again until Sep at least.

My mum will be annoyed if the funeral times website isn't updated though. I think they miss the funerals most of all as they'd get to see a different crowd at each funeral. Im so glad they stopped funeral gatherings. A week before official lockdown my dad was a funeral with 200 odd folk & hugging some he hadn't seen for 40years Hmm

Has anyone seen anything on how the stats are looking vs the projected numbers? I want to know if we're up or down on the curve or what....

Iblinkedandiamold · 03/04/2020 14:23

@Lipz, got a bit excited there about being back at work and in a routine again. Grin. I miss my little funny charges. I'm sad that I might not see some of them again. Sad

@buckeejit I dont keep track of it, I try not to look up too much about it but I do remember Leo saying something about the numbers in Ireland being lower than they thought they would be. I think they expected around 15,000 to have it by now. If that is true then we are very far below thank Goodness. I dont know weather 15000 was worst case sanerio or based on science or what.

eggandonion · 03/04/2020 14:25

It's bad form to miss a funeral though, disrespectful. Even if it's some person you may never have met!
I had a click and collect, no more slots available now. My Easter egg wasn't in it. Now I have to build up to a real supermarket trip to get one, essential!

Iblinkedandiamold · 03/04/2020 14:31

@eggandonion I am out of Almond Milk. Shops around me dont sell it so I'll have to go to tesco for that. Cant drink cow's milk and I need to have at least 100 cups of tea a day. Grin
Might get some Easter eggs too. I'll see if the evening is quieter. Might chance going at around 7 or 8pm.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 03/04/2020 15:49

There's a piece on the IT website this afternoon about the under diagnosis of cases here. It's a bit worrying if true. www.irishtimes.com/news/health/coronavirus-situation-in-ireland-being-misrepresented-because-of-limited-testing-1.4219889

Mind you, there's also a piece by the WHO epidemic lead saying we're great Confused

I am going to be a diy queen after this. Had a slightly too big bath panel sitting my bathroom for the last year or two. Got a saw from my dad's garage yesterday and today I cut it to size. Tomorrow I will put it together, when I move my arms again. Grin

Would you think of using oat milk ?
Apparently it is better for the environment.

Iblinkedandiamold · 03/04/2020 16:53

@LadyEloise, I dont like oat milk. I cant get that locally either though. Remember when you just went to the supermarket without thinking about it. I miss those days.

eggandonion · 03/04/2020 17:00

So do I. I have a main list for weekly stuff, but like to nip in for bread and get distracted by croissants and muffins. I'm not good at onlline
Our local Super Valu is good for almond milk and so on - they expanded the health food section and the small health food shop in their mall closed down.
We are building up to a trip to the petrol station.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 03/04/2020 17:39

Mash Direct are doing home delivery, free in NI and €3.50 to RoI. I quite like some of their food, especially the plain mashed potatoes.

eggandonion · 03/04/2020 18:01

I'd kill for some champ just now. I have no scallions, but plenty of chives!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 03/04/2020 18:50

Also, some restaurant suppliers/wholesalers are now selling to the public. The quantities are pretty big though. For instance, this company sells flour and cake mix, but 12kg of flour or 4kg of brownie mix is a hell of a lot.

7Days · 03/04/2020 19:09

Get peelin' *eggandonion'
I'd live a plate myself, with a soft fried egg.....

eggandonion · 03/04/2020 19:46

My grampa had champ with an egg cracked in to poach in it. Jamie Oliver eat your heart out.

Iblinkedandiamold · 03/04/2020 20:43

It's exhausting doing nothing all day isnt it. Grin

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 03/04/2020 20:52

Is anyone else’s primary school updating daily photos of what other kids have been doing? I’m feeling woefully inadequate on the homeschooling front. No papier-mâché solar systems in this house! Grin

LightACandleHoney · 03/04/2020 21:06

Flip sake Juan who has time for that nonsense?!

My DC’s schools (who have actually all been phenomenal in this whole mess) sent a ton of emails today to say that while no work was being set over the holidays, they recognised that the kids would be more bored than usual so they could undertake a range of projects which we are free to share on the schools’ social media outlets. Wtf! We’ve been working our butt off for 2 weeks doing actual school work (not making bloody papier mache models) and are planning on staying in PJs as many days as possible and doing absolutely nothing before we’re back to the grind of homeschooling 4 children ranging from p5-f4 all at one kitchen table!

Perhaps we should post photos of our TV/iPad screens because that’s about all we’ll be doing for the next 2 weeks

Iblinkedandiamold · 03/04/2020 21:12

Well now would be good time for children to learn life skills, cooking, cleaning, making cups of tea, pouring wine, you know that sort of thing. Grin

Dk20 · 03/04/2020 21:16

yes there are daily updates on our school Facebook page with photos of the other kids and what they have done during the day... whereas my 6 year old boy is doing very few school related activities but spends his days looking after his 9 month old bro while I have to continue to work from home BlushSad. Its making me feel awful and so guilty but I have to keep working.
I actually turned off notifications from one of the WhatsApp groups cos I felt so bad and might have to do the same with the school fb page too.

Dk20 · 03/04/2020 21:18

And the only time we get around to doing any kind of school work is once the baby had gone to bed at 6pm

Inniu · 03/04/2020 21:26

I had Butlers deliver Easter Eggs to my parents. They are off sweets for lent.
They are online shopping for the first time ever as they are over 70 and have underlying condition so not leaving house and I know they would never think to order Easter eggs.
They were delighted.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 03/04/2020 22:14

Hello everyone I follow this thread but don't post on it. It's good to get a perspective from others in the country.
I dint know Butler's deliver eggs! I will check if there's still time to order now 🤞🏻
I think overall we're doing really well with lockdown and social distancing. There'll always be eejits that think the rules don't apply to them but in the main I think people are doing their best. I live in a commuter town and it's like a ghost town at the moment. Maybe Dublin & Cork are different.
I know the age profile of deaths is older but I do worry about the numbers of younger people who are very ill. George Lee (who I can't stand and can't explain why!) said on the news that the median age of those in ICU is 62. He said that means half the people are over 62 and half are under it. DH and I are (very) late 40s so this struck a chord with me. I must admit, I'm worried. But so far we are all well and that's all that really matters.
Stay safe everyone

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 03/04/2020 22:25

Not me that’s for sure!
