Coronavirus in Ireland/N Ireland

The first case of Coronavirus has been confirmed in Northern Ireland.
A passenger travelled from Italy to the North via Dublin.
I don't know how we will cope in the Republic if we have large numbers ill with the virus as our health service is already at breaking point.

Flatbreads

Equal parts greek yogurt & self raising flour, (prob any flour would do though)

That's basically it! I add in salt & Nigella seeds. Sometimes instead sesame seeds or some cut up dulse, (was considering texting my dulse dealer to see if he thought he'd be out gathering this year but he's got Covid ☹️ hopefully he's on the mend though)

Anyway, just roll out thin on a floured surface & into a hot frying pan for a while. Maybe 30 secs to several minutes. Keep an eye, it will bubble a bit like naan, then flip. I've started to put a little oil in the pan & running it round before putting it in the flatbread. I don't think I used to do this but can't remember if I used to add any oil to the dough. I use about 100-150g & that does 4 wee ones. If I can do it anyone can. Paula McIntyre did these at a roadshow ages ago & ive been doing them since.

If you have an instantpot, you can also make your own greek yogurt. It's fab

I'm fond of Miggledy, since before he was president. My father knew him slightly years and years ago and always spoke well of him.

KayakingOnDown · 02/04/2020 18:44

buckejit that recipe sounds cool, will definitely give that a go.

honeyrider · 02/04/2020 18:59

I'm not gone on Michael D, never liked him even when he was a local TD. I think he's a hypocrite, a champagne socialist if ever there was one.

honeyrider · 02/04/2020 19:05

Another 402 confirmed cases and 13 deaths RIP.

ElspethFlashman · 02/04/2020 20:29

Median age was 92!!!

It's really going for the old folks.

There's 109 in ICU. 312 ICU beds still available.

They're trying to get "recovered" stats, but at least can say that 25 people have been released from ICU so far and are on the mend. They're working on getting other recovered numbers.

LadyEloise · 02/04/2020 20:31

Yay honeyrider I'm not alone.
He loves the sound of his own high pitched voice.

The numbers aren't looking good. On the Worldometer Coronavirus site we have almost 800 cases per million and 20 deaths per million.
The UK has almost 500 cases per million and 43 deaths per million. Sweden has 551 cases per million and 30 deaths per million. The Swedes do not have the lockdown we have in Ireland.
Am I reading the table correctly ?

eggandonion · 02/04/2020 21:11

I do like the presidential dogs.
I don't know how accurate the cases per million are - they seemed to test anyone with a sniffle at the start then move to health service people only?
Lady Eloise, are elderly people in nursing homes not being moved to hospital? I know a couple of very frail elderly people who were moved (years ago) from homes to hospital and the journey ended their lives

ElspethFlashman · 02/04/2020 21:33

The cases per million relates to positive tests.

Different countries test different amounts, with different criteria.

For example you could say California is doing brilliant cos it has only 8,000 cases for 40 million people...... until you realise they have only tested 29,000 of that 40 million.

LadyEloise · 02/04/2020 21:34

eggandonion I don't know anout elderly people moving from nursing homes. I do know of two elderly couple who were in a private nursing home for respite and thdy were sent home.

MarDhea · 02/04/2020 21:35

LadyEloise you can't compare the cases per million across countries because of the difference in testing extent - we're testing contacts and people with mild symptoms (at least if you can get a test....) whereas the UK is only testing people who are so ill that they require hospitalisation.

The deaths per million are more comparable. Ireland's not too bad but I think it'll rise steadily for a while more. I'd be scared if I still lived in the UK though - their rate is higher than it should be and increasing fast. And the US looks even worse Sad

eggandonion · 02/04/2020 21:44

We know a lady in England who was in a nursing home following hip replacement - she decided to go home as she didn't feel safe.

ElspethFlashman · 02/04/2020 21:49

Leo keeps reminding people that the surge is yet to come.

I'm not really clear on the whole surge thing - is it meant to be the peak of the curve?

Twixes · 02/04/2020 22:05

I suppose it's high growth rates as we move towards the peak?

Barbararara · 02/04/2020 22:50

@ElspethFlashman thanks for sharing that. I’ve been watching the numbers of dead rising and no word on recoveries except the first five and it’s been really worrying. I’m deeply relieved to know that, at least some people, are pulling through.

I don’t really understand the secrecy around it all. It seems strange not to list the names of the dead when in the past RTÉ would have named the victim of every road accident, farm tragedy and murder.

I feel at a loss hearing numbers but not seeing names and faces. I don’t mean it in a prurient way but there’s a collective aspect to grief, iykwim, and here in Ireland we’re used to supporting the bereaved as a community. I don’t know how to put it really. These blank numbers seem so cold.

7Days · 02/04/2020 23:52

I dont know Barbarara . You're right in what you say. But i was very surprised to hear a few off hand 'jokes' when all this was just kicking off. Along the lines of not wanting to admit to the neighbours you've got it. It was surprising but not just isolated. We're rural and quite old fashioned here. But not unusually so.
I mentioned above about FIL and TB in the wider family in his youth. It was never spoken about, there was a shame attached to it. I wonder is it lingering a bit still among some people.

buckeejit · 02/04/2020 23:58

@Barbararara I feel that too. Almost that by not being named they are just adding to statistics of doom rather than being a person we should grieve for. I guess practically it gets to the stage where they won't have time to name everyone so maybe don't want to set a precedent?

There is the odd story of 100 year old that recovered, but also it's a worry how badly affected some young people are. Mainstream media seems to have to focus on generally what happens rather than the extremes. Again maybe understandable but frustrating. I feel like we've been waiting to get to peak for ages even though I know it's not been that long ☹️

NoGravyForYou · 03/04/2020 08:23

Can't get to see my niece at Easter and when the limitations came into place Easter wasn't on my mind so I have no egg for her. Butlers are selling online and can deliver it right to her door. Are people still ordering stuff?

buckeejit · 03/04/2020 08:33

I'm considering a dash to the spar for Easter eggs for the wee ones I mind. Would love to some packs of little eggs for them, us & the neighbours. We do a hunt just round the garden every year & the children love it. Dd has been in tears about missing it.

NoGravyForYou · 03/04/2020 08:48

DP can pick up eggs for the kids I mind when he does the food shop, but DN is outside our 2km radius and lives with PIL who don't seem to get that they can't hug us and we can't go inside, so we are trying to avoid going anywhere near them 🙈

AngelaScandal · 03/04/2020 09:01

My husband remarked this evening you’d turn on the news to hear the numbers the same way you’d wait for the football results. He feels very disconnected from it

Iblinkedandiamold · 03/04/2020 10:55

Yeah I feel a bit like that too @Boscoismyspiritanimal.
Some good news though, my facebook feed tells me that an 82 year old man from Ballinameen in Co.Roscommon has recovered from Covid 19. It's nice to see people sharing a positive story about Covid 19 and senior citizens for a change.

eggandonion · 03/04/2020 11:14

Not having names and faces makes it unreal - people as statistics. I remember people at 9/11 putting up photos of missing persons - hard to imagine a time with no social media was so recent. It did connect you more to reality.
When I was a child nobody mentioned cancer there were knowing looks - AIDS and TB were similar.

Iblinkedandiamold · 03/04/2020 11:20

I wonder is it more about keeping people at home. People might feel that they have to go and comfort "Mary" because she lost her husband. They have said not to put pressure on undertakers to publish a death on the likes of RIP.
You do feel a bit more connected with pictures, when the Manchester Arena bombing happened I remember pictures of the missing and when you out they were dead I was upset.

eggandonion · 03/04/2020 12:18

Yes, that was terrible with all the young people - also the man who was shot in the Troubles in his eighties, there was a photo of him smoking his pipe.
It's very hard on any family bereaved just now, whatever reason.
