Coronavirus in Ireland/N Ireland

beanaseireann · 27/02/2020 19:56

The first case of Coronavirus has been confirmed in Northern Ireland.
A passenger travelled from Italy to the North via Dublin.
I don't know how we will cope in the Republic if we have large numbers ill with the virus as our health service is already at breaking point.

*My understanding is that the risk on a soft, moist surface like cardboard is v small.

And I think it’s an An Post initiative. I may be wrong though.*

That seems to be the thinking.

Another 325 confirmed cases and 17 dead. RIP.

ElspethFlashman · 31/03/2020 21:23

Number of contacts in newly confirmed cases are 3 on average. Down from 20 at the start. Down from 5 last week.

That's really brilliant. Only 3 contacts in the previous 14 days!

LaurieMarlow · 31/03/2020 21:29

The numbers of cases aren’t rising significantly day on day, which is positive.

Remember Leo said we could be looking at 15,000 cases by end of March? We’re a LONG way short of that. That’s a good indicator that measures are working.

Twixes · 31/03/2020 21:48

What's the egg and flour situation in everyone's local supermarkets?

There's none to be had in my local Tesco, lidl, Aldi or supervalu. Flour isn't a big deal but we need eggs!

LaurieMarlow · 31/03/2020 21:55

Flour, we had a good bit in, so not an issue for me.

I adore eggs and eat at least one a day, so I’m invested. I’m baffled by what’s going on. My local Lidl has not had a box of eggs in it for at least 3 weeks now (as far as I can see). The SuperValu 10 mins drive away is stocked as normal, you wouldn’t know there was a problem. 🤷‍♀️

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 31/03/2020 21:58

That’s really good WRT the numbers!! 3 contacts in 14 days. Pretty good.

HorseOutside · 31/03/2020 21:59

There's still no flour in our local supermarkets and eggs are in short supply too.

Our postcards arrived today, but no leaflet.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 31/03/2020 22:48

Seems to be OK for most things in my local Dunnes (according to DH, I have an underlying health condition and haven't been into a supermarket for ages). Except for Walkers Baked Sour Cream crisps which I keep putting on the shopping list and they're never in stock.

Superlooper · 31/03/2020 22:54

Eggs and flour in SuperValu. Though the staff were telling me they get a set amount of eggs, they can't order extra as shared out among stores.

Flour is in smaller bags and a different brand than usual but in stock

ElspethFlashman · 31/03/2020 22:57

Himself said only half-dozen boxes of eggs left in Aldi today.

eggandonion · 31/03/2020 23:57

It's patchy availability. I have flour and eggs, I was hoping my daughter would make a cake. She's hoping I would. I really don't need to be eating cake.
Hope any health workers here or amongst nearest and dearest are keeping well.

DuchessDumbarton · 01/04/2020 00:08

Flour lowish here...can only get the Supervalu or Dunnes own brand. Which I dont find as good as the Odlums or whatever.

Lovely egg lady locally travels around the town and has her times on Fbook.
So she's at such-and-such a spot at 2pm on Wednesday.
6 eggs €2 exact change only.
No shortage.

Our local fruit and veg place has started doing deliveries...ring in with your order, pay by phone and they deliver.
Great innovation.

Good morning all. It's a beautiful morning here in Co Down, we're off out for our daily exercise. It's so lovely to see the sun and feel the warmth from it.

Wishing you all as good a day as possible.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 01/04/2020 09:36
Confused

No sun in this part of down!

eggandonion · 01/04/2020 10:06

Grey day in Munster.

LadyEloise · 01/04/2020 10:14

We got the postcards and brochure.
I think the postcards are a waste of money.
After this emergency AnPost will increase the price of stamps again.
It's just their marketing department coming up with an idea to justify their existence

LadyEloise · 01/04/2020 10:16

Is lockdown in the North the same as in the Republic ?

eggandonion · 01/04/2020 11:15

I'm not so concerned about the postcards, but the brochure will date quickly. I suppose it gets info to people who aren't online though.
My Dd2 threw out the iodine tablets when she did a kondo raid on the bathroom!
My postman is a hunk, so I'm happy to keep him visiting.

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 01/04/2020 12:13

Lockdown for us up here in NI is:
allowed out once a day for exercise
allowed out to go shopping for essentials - food/medicines
allowed to travel to work if you cannot work from home
non-essential shops closed
bars/restaurants closed

At least that's what I think it is! Happy to be corrected.

Dk20 · 01/04/2020 13:04

I work in finance and we have daily team calls since were wfh.
Last week they were all about mental health and minding yourself, they know were adjusting to working from home and it's hard etc.
Well this morning we had a not so lovely call saying now that were not commuting to work, we should be available to help out more and our time sheets will be watched closely to see what overtime were doing. So basically we should be doing more hours now. Never mind that we have no childcare to look after our kids while were working, I have my 6 year old and 9 month old here whilst working and managing my normal day is hard enough.
I was only saying on Monday that I've finally been able to take an hour for lunch - it had been the first time since January I've been able to do it, that's gone again already

Twixes · 01/04/2020 13:24

@Dk20 that's so unreasonable but I think maybe not uncommon for financial services. My husband works for a bank and he's expected to do a full 8 hour day. It's ridiculous. He starts at 7am and works until 11, I take the middle portion of the day and then he works until 5.30. No let up.

Not helpful I know, but you have my sympathies.

Dk20 · 01/04/2020 13:57

@twixies it's so hard trying to juggle everything, I find by the end of the work day I am more stressed than I would be if I was in the office.

It's just the way it was worded, I usually do 5 hours over time on a normal week, I manage 10 extra hours on a busy week. But now I'm not travelling I should be doing 2 extra hours a day on top of this going by what was said.
It's just the hypocrisy aswell going from how we have to mind our mental health last week to this this week. And in all honesty my mental health is probably worse now than ever trying to juggle everything.

eggandonion · 01/04/2020 14:02

Dd2 works for an engineering company. She has training one day a week online, and an email from the big boss reminding people to take proper breaks!

JaneJeffer · 01/04/2020 15:35

I was hoping my daughter would make a cake. She's hoping I would
Grin who won?

buckeejit · 01/04/2020 15:37

@Dk20 that sucks. Dh is wfh in fin services too & he's doing extra hours as their system is so slow remotely.

Feels like a week's Grace & then they expect normal productivity to resume?!

I'm doing very little exercise but a lot of drinking. Dbro keeps some chickens & has an honesty box but will feel a bit bad asking for eggs as I don't usually buy from him as it's other side of town! I'm sure I'll get over it though if we get to that stage.

Some of the school parents have been complaining about the lack of work & support from school. Hmm I really couldn't care less!
