Coronavirus in Ireland/N Ireland

beanaseireann · 27/02/2020 19:56

The first case of Coronavirus has been confirmed in Northern Ireland.
A passenger travelled from Italy to the North via Dublin.
I don't know how we will cope in the Republic if we have large numbers ill with the virus as our health service is already at breaking point.

Saw a video of people queuing for fish and chips in howth. All standing nearly on top of each other. I despair, I really do.
Italy have list control, we will too if we dont cop on.

7Days · 22/03/2020 21:42

God I want fish and chips on the pier

eggandonion · 22/03/2020 21:42

It was madness on the coast near me, lots of outrage on local Facebook. I'm trying to cut shopping to twice a week, no online available. I can't imagine going anywhere with people around if I don't have to.
Boris was saying the risk is less outdoors but I don't think he's an expert. Leo needs to address us again, with further lockdown I think.

loveisanopensore · 22/03/2020 22:03

Wicklow was stuffed today

Iblinkedandiamold · 22/03/2020 22:08

@eggandonion.
No online shopping here either as such, supervalu are doing a click and collect, you call them or alert a member of staff when you arrive at you slot time. Open your boot and they put your shopping in for you.
Unfortunately Supervalu are expensive and dont gave a lot of the stuff tesco have. They charge an extra E3 for click and collect.

ElspethFlashman · 22/03/2020 22:52

Yeah that was Beshoffs in Howth. Not that they could really do anything about people queueing all the way down the street. Hopefully the queue was because they were limiting customers at a time.

The stupidity of the queuers though. There must have been 50 people in it. For chips!

HorseOutside · 22/03/2020 23:06

West Clare beaches were packed today apparently. Madness.

eggandonion · 22/03/2020 23:21

Yes, it was like a quick wave at granny, then off mammy and daddy and 2.4 children went to the seaside.
I'm a bit concerned at the Irish medics returning, as they would need to be quarantined somewhere (at home with their mammies?) for two weeks. And what if all our overseas staff decide to head off too? Surely people should stay put?

7Days · 22/03/2020 23:52

I'm sure they enough to be safe. They are medics, it's unlikely they prance around

eggandonion · 23/03/2020 00:12

I can't remember the last time I saw an Irish hospital doctor below consultant level. If all our registrars leave for their home countries what will we do? It's far better to remain in situ than travel now. You can't just abandon sick people in oz, Canada, USA and fly to Ireland, that's unethical?

honeyrider · 23/03/2020 01:17

*Germany had 22,364 positives but only 84 deaths which is a mortality rate of only 0.3%.

They seem to have flattened the curve successfully and the readiness of beds and the ability of staff to fully prepare seems to be part of it. Though they're reluctant to really theorise as it's still ongoing.*

I don't know if what I'm posting is true or not but I read it somewhere yesterday but because I've been reading a lot of stuff from all sorts of sites I cannot remember where I saw it.

I read that the German figures are fudged, that if someone died from coronavirus and had an underlying health condition the death is put down to the underlying condition and not coronavirus.

ElspethFlashman · 23/03/2020 09:51

No there's gazillion of Irish Regs. I work with them.

And the ones who are Indian etc have been here about a decade and have kids and aren't going anywhere.

livingmyslothlife · 23/03/2020 09:53

I live on the Ards Pennisula and can't believe the caravan parks are still open. Not only the statics open but tourers are arriving. Apparently our local shop yesterday was like the July fortnight with people in full on holiday mode.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 23/03/2020 10:11

This country is a fucking disgrace to itself.

buckeejit · 23/03/2020 10:11

@livingmyslothlife it is a disgrace. The army should be chasing them. The caravan parks should be shut.

It has changed so much in the last week & I'm dreading the inevitable change over the coming week. I wish there was something I could volunteer to do at home while I'm not working. I hate feeling so useless

Cocolapew · 23/03/2020 10:17

That's shocking Slothlife.
I haven't been anywhere except my estate, we have a Spar, butchers and Boots 5 min walk away.
I've been driving DD to work but not going into Bloomfield's. I think most of the non food shops have closed in it.

Iblinkedandiamold · 23/03/2020 10:30

Still waiting for my payment to be processed. My employer is paying me for 2 days which I'd say is delaying it. The pandemic payments have rightly been processed first but this week is the week when my rent is due. Hopefully I'll get the payment before that comes out.
I am so stressed, even though I know I have savings. I have enough money to cover bills for the end of this month and next month. Why am I so stressed?

buckeejit · 23/03/2020 11:46

@Iblinkedandiamold you'd be mad not to be stressed. Fingers crossed the financial impact is the most of our worries. I know it's far from insignificant. I think landlords will be understanding right now.

eggandonion · 23/03/2020 12:06

The thread trending where a poster is mortified at her hubbie swearing at school .... what a lot of delicate flowers, they wouldn't survive on this island! I let fly a bit, but seem to be surrounded by non stop bold words. Can't cope with bold words, can't cope with mummy... How did I live in England for a decade?

Iblinkedandiamold · 23/03/2020 13:00

@eggandonion that made me smile.
@buckeejit thanks, keeping myself sane by stripping the peeling laminate from my kitchen cupboards. It's surprisingly therapeutic and easy enough, just using a hairdryer. Might as well do the four drawers as well while I'm at it.
Just have to buy cupboard paint now and figure out what to do before I paint it. Grin

Squigean · 23/03/2020 14:07

I read that the German figures are fudged, that if someone died from coronavirus and had an underlying health condition the death is put down to the underlying condition and not coronavirus.
Italy is doing the opposite. If someone dies and has an underlying illness and was tested positive for Covid-19 their death is counted in the Covid-19 deaths.

Probably because the vast majority aren't like that. Wet-blanket posters on MN are like empty vessels.

7Days · 23/03/2020 14:11

There will still be an excess mortality figure in Germany, it will be pretty easy to make an educated guess for people who are used to looking at those figures.

LaurieMarlow · 23/03/2020 14:14

I think the German death toll is low because A) they’re testing more extensively than most so are counting the much milder cases in the infected total and B) many of those ill with it are young and healthy types who picked it up while skiing and unlikely to die.

That last point could change.

Worried25 · 23/03/2020 14:18

Random question but does anyone know if there is any support for plp who have lost earnings from a holiday let. I have a small cottage which was totally booked out for months in advance and now obviously every has been cancelled. It’s a significant part of our income and I pay tax every year on my earnings obviously too. Any idea if this would come under self employment?

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 23/03/2020 14:54

Are you in the UK Worried, and do you fill in a tax return? If yes, I would say you are a sole trader. Unfortunately, so far there is feck all help for us.
