Coronavirus in Ireland/N Ireland

The first case of Coronavirus has been confirmed in Northern Ireland.
A passenger travelled from Italy to the North via Dublin.
I don't know how we will cope in the Republic if we have large numbers ill with the virus as our health service is already at breaking point.

Michelle has a mummy? Surely a mammy!

My dd1 is 26 and we discovered she hadn't seen anyone for two days as her housemates are away. They all work in frontline health care, on shifts. I try not to contact her too much (so I don't appear needy), but I'd love a posh afternoon tea with my wee girl.

My kids refer to me as 'my mum', to other people, but Mammy in private. Ds sounds like Ross O'Carroll Kelly after 5 years in Dublin.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 22/03/2020 11:40

So many MNers would cringe themselves inside out if they came to NI and heard us all talking about our mummies. Grin

eggandonion · 22/03/2020 11:47

Their wee mummies and daddies. Dh has a Ma, my mammy had a mam!

LaurieMarlow · 22/03/2020 11:48

My wee mummy Grin

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 22/03/2020 11:51

All our mummies are really small here. And my nana. She’s minuscule. Grin

Squigean · 22/03/2020 11:54

I just video called my mum. She doesn't live in Ireland anymore so don't know when I'll see her again.

On the subject of wee Daniel I think he doesn't age because he's been in his 50s ages. Even when he was 30-odd.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 22/03/2020 13:29

I'm shocked at the numbers just out now (for RoI) 177 people are in hospital and 30 in ICU 🙁

And 40,000 people waiting for testing...

ElspethFlashman · 22/03/2020 15:34

I think it's against the law not to say Mummy & Daddy in NI. And pronounce Daddy as Dally. Grin

Yeah 40,000 waiting on testing, I had a feeling it was high as so many were waiting since last Monday even.

That'll be cleared next week and we'll see a huge Spike in positives.

But remember positives don't = deaths!

Germany had 22,364 positives but only 84 deaths which is a mortality rate of only 0.3%.

They seem to have flattened the curve successfully and the readiness of beds and the ability of staff to fully prepare seems to be part of it. Though they're reluctant to really theorise as it's still ongoing.

There has reportedly been another death yesterday in ROI which may be announced tonight but again, tragic as it is, it was an elderly gentleman with co-morbidities.

If we could keep it down like Germany managed to, wouldnt it be a great thing?

Mawi · 22/03/2020 15:46

Can anyone tell me if we should call GP if we suspect we have it? Are they testing everyone or is it if the symptoms get bad? I know I should know this but I cannot think straight. My poor Dd has asthma, this morning she has woke with a cough and a tightness in her chest. No fever, I am checking every 2 hours. I am absolutely terrified because of her asthma and I need someone to give me some clear instructions please. I am in Ireland.

eggandonion · 22/03/2020 16:10

I think they seem to test for a dry cough with a fever. Testing is ramping up tomorrow. If you call your gp the phone message should tell you the next step.

Cocolapew · 22/03/2020 16:12

Second death confirmed in NI, an elderly man with ongoing health problems Sad

Squigean · 22/03/2020 16:30

@Mawi yes call your GP, do not go to them.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 22/03/2020 17:17

Ok so I’ve no idea if this is just rumour or what but apparently the army are setting up a temporary morgue in a local base here in NI and dundonald icebowl has already been set up as one too. Sounds extreme but looking at the number of absolute fuckwits out on beaches around the NI coast it would surprise me if it’s necessary. Angry

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 22/03/2020 17:18

Wouldnt surprise me.

ElspethFlashman · 22/03/2020 18:22

It could be a testing centre....?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 22/03/2020 18:31

Yes could be. That would be a lot more positive than a morgue!

buckeejit · 22/03/2020 18:49

It makes me so angry all the people that are out. Ffs. Think the army should be stationed at anywhere nice & just tell everyone to go home.

White park bay was mobbed.

Just this one week would help so much if they stayed at home. It's so fucking disrespectful. Ugh.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 22/03/2020 18:58

As much as I’ve really appreciated this good weather it couldn’t have come at a worse time. I really wish it would just bucket down.

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 22/03/2020 19:28

We got out today, it was luckily really quiet near us so we were able to go for a bike ride first thing.

First day of home schooling tomorrow. We’re going to draw up a daily timetable and try to stick to it.

Iblinkedandiamold · 22/03/2020 20:20

Lots of places packed today. Wanted to ho for a walk in the local mountain today at 12pm. Had to drive away, too many cars and more were coming. Went for a walk around the town instead, hardly any people out and about. (They were all up the mountain.)

Iblinkedandiamold · 22/03/2020 20:39

I wonder if we will follow other countries and go into complete lock down and not be allowed out at all. This would be my nightmare, I love getting out for a run or a walk. I live on my own too, I dont think I could cope staying with my parents for days, as much as I love them.

Superlooper · 22/03/2020 20:51

50,000 applied...wow, just wow.

Also in awe and tears at the Irish medical staff who have been working abroad and have resigned from their jobs to come and work in Ireland.

buckeejit · 22/03/2020 20:51

Have you all seen the video from the respiratory team at the Ulster or Royal? Heartbreaking but just says stay at home, from all of them.

You're right about the weather. Personally better to have sun but disappointing that so many are swanning about.

buckeejit · 22/03/2020 20:52

@Superlooper that is amazing ❤️

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 22/03/2020 21:09

I think that will come, blinked. We are lucky due to location that we can cycle without being close to any pedestrians, but most people simply can’t assume that if they turn up at a park they won’t end up near to others.
