Coronavirus in Ireland/N Ireland

beanaseireann · 27/02/2020 19:56

The first case of Coronavirus has been confirmed in Northern Ireland.
A passenger travelled from Italy to the North via Dublin.
I don't know how we will cope in the Republic if we have large numbers ill with the virus as our health service is already at breaking point.

I’m in Ireland and do a tax return every year. I suspected that.... I thought with paying tax etc there might be some help.

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 23/03/2020 15:08

Ah, I don't know about what's happening in ROI, but here in the north there are a couple of measures that are supposed to help, like postponement of tax payment dates.

Dk20 · 23/03/2020 17:41

@Worried25 whose income is it treated as under the tax return and does that person have any other income on the tax return?

LightACandleHoney · 23/03/2020 22:38

Tonight I feel scared for the first time. I am close to tears. Lockdown is absolutely the right thing to do - and the eejits who have been hanging out in the parks are the very reason we need to do this.

I’m scared though.

This is raising some post traumatic reactions in me due to some significant trauma our family lived through in the last few years.

I’m also really fucking scared about the army being back on our streets

JaneJeffer · 23/03/2020 22:41

Is Claire Byrne isolating in a sauna? Confused

JaneJeffer · 23/03/2020 22:42

Light Thanks

Squigean · 23/03/2020 23:14

I said those exact words to DH JaneJeffer!

@LightACandleHoney it might be an initial panic. Totally understand reaction, it's a huge thing you're facing. Even though one we could predict once it happens it's initial terrifying.

eggandonion · 23/03/2020 23:19

I think being told exactly what to do is maybe less anxiety making, but I'm still in a state of disbelief every time I wake up.
It's like a sauna, but perhaps it's a tasteful shepherd's hut, I think David Cameron had one of those. I don't think I could broadcast from anywhere where I live. It's way too messy

7Days · 24/03/2020 08:07

I dont think it's a fancy shepherds but, it's more like the wooden sheds people have, but hers is quite new.
She is probably only filming in it

eggandonion · 24/03/2020 11:11

I want one, whatever it is. Yer wan in the studio had a lot of bad connections to deal with. Claire was brave to do the show, I've had chest infections that knocked me out all evening.

Iblinkedandiamold · 24/03/2020 11:13

@7days your post made me laugh.
Watching this morning. The people in the care home is making me smile. What a great bunch, god bless the workers unlike in Spain where a lot of care homes were just abandoned apparently. Firefighters were finding some old people dead in their beds.

7Days · 24/03/2020 11:52

Oh Christ, iblinked that's just horrific. Those poor old people

We are probably in for stronger measures, unfortunately necessary.
Did you catch the phrase all-Ireland approach mentioned after the Johnson announcement.

LadyEloise · 24/03/2020 14:54

So sad what happened in Spain. Soldiers went in to care homes and found residents dead in their beds.. The staff gone....

NoGravyForYou · 24/03/2020 15:20

Minster for Ed has announced the schools will not be opening in the "short term". Helpful....

Squigean · 24/03/2020 15:56

There's to be another announcement by Leo today?

Few sources saying (on Twitter) is at 4 (in 4 minutes!!) But nothing on rte

Squigean · 24/03/2020 15:59

Well I say sources it's the Irish Mirror and a tip radio station

eggandonion · 24/03/2020 16:12

Irish Times reckon more to happen as well.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 24/03/2020 16:19

Oh that’s so awful about those poor people in Spain! Just abandoned and left to die! Sad

Iblinkedandiamold · 24/03/2020 16:21

Watching on RTE 1. Have to say my local large town is ahead. Most non essential shops closed along with salons and cafes and hotels.
We all knew schools wouldnt be going back until after easter at the earliest.
I'm hoping my payment is one that goes up. I dont know as my boss is paying me for 2 days. I might end up with more than my weekly wage. Grin
I dont think that'll happen though.

eggandonion · 24/03/2020 16:45

I only get paid for the hours I work, but I'd like to have my 'stamp' as it were. I wonder if that's possible. Beause I have heard nothing from work (small business).

Iblinkedandiamold · 24/03/2020 17:05

My boss is just as confused as me. Everything keeps changing, I'm in Childcare, first there were no top ups allowed, then employers could top up. Now the payment is increased to 75% of a wage. The 350 is 90% or more of my wage. (No good at math) I didn't apply for the covid pandemic payment yet the email I got from the social was titled, covid 19 pandemic payment. So I dunno.
I'm going to get in touch with my parents with a few ideas for them, links to songs and rhymes we were learning and maybe some activities.
I actually miss the kids, I also miss human physical contact.

eggandonion · 24/03/2020 17:15

Do you sign on over the summer, would you be in the system that way? (Not being nosy, I know a lot of childcare is 'seasonal'). I miss going to work too, it gives the week a structure, and i meet other people who annoy me as opposed to my family annoying me.
It must be a nightmare for staff in social welfare, hse management etc now. I hope it doesn't become efficient, as it will have been long term if it does!

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 24/03/2020 17:23

Well, we're not quite in lock down but not far off it. There I was hoping the kids would be back to school on Monday 🤣 I wonder why they went with groups of no more than 4 rather than 2 as in the UK.

Lipz · 24/03/2020 17:29

Did he say he was listing shops that are to close ? What happens in big shopping centres that have one grocery shop ?

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 24/03/2020 17:51

I didn't hear it love, just watching the rte updates. Sandra Hurley's tweet with the outline list is posted at 17.46 www.rte.ie/news/2020/0324/1124976-coronavirus-tracker/
