Coronavirus in Ireland/N Ireland

beanaseireann · 27/02/2020 19:56

The first case of Coronavirus has been confirmed in Northern Ireland.
A passenger travelled from Italy to the North via Dublin.
I don't know how we will cope in the Republic if we have large numbers ill with the virus as our health service is already at breaking point.

Daniel and Majella amuse me, and I do tend to sing along with Daniel. My dd2 lives near the bingo place, adores bingo, and is annoyed because she came to join dh and me as she could be better isolated than in a shared house.
We have a neighbour in a wedding band but he hasn't started singing yet.

Iblinkedandiamold · 21/03/2020 16:20

I saw that video doing the rounds, it's great. Communities are being brought together by this.
I cant stand Daniel, he gives me the creeps. I get a chill down my spine when I see him. I've no idea why but he's like a creep uncle to me shudders
He seems like a lively guy so i have no idea where this comes from. Then again they say that about a lot of serial killers too. Shock

eggandonion · 21/03/2020 16:22

How very dare you say that about Wee Daniel!

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 21/03/2020 16:38

Spoke to a friend earlier who is a shop owner in NI. She told me they’ve now to apply for permits to go to work. Lockdown getting very close.

Cocolapew · 21/03/2020 17:01

I think its needed Juan, to many people still milling about.
DD text on her break, they aren't much busier than the last few days but are doing more cleaning.

qazxc · 21/03/2020 17:06

Fair shitty has stopped filming, they have enough episodes until end April I think. Late late might do remote interviews/ no audience shows.

quicknamechangearoonie · 21/03/2020 17:07

I met our Daniel in a Donegal hotel about 5 years ago and we got a photo with him (for a laugh more than anythingBlush)

Up close, his skin is like a leather sofa. 100% had a wee bit of work done. And nobody has a natural tan like that in Donegal...

eggandonion · 21/03/2020 17:11

Classic Emmerdale and Corrie are great, I'm sure there is Brookside somewhere too. RTE and UTV and BBC NI must have some gems they could amuse use with. (I'm easily pleased). Or rerun Coronation St from the past year as half the time I had no idea what was happening!
Supermarkets seem quite organised here now, although I grabbed an online slot for early April and it seems to have vanished..

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 21/03/2020 17:37

I think so too @Cocolapew. People are never going to comply with the guideline until they’re forced to.

eggandonion · 21/03/2020 17:50

I got my photo taken with Marty Morissey. He's like a giant hoover, anyone near him is sucked in beside him and photographed. I don't think he has had work done.

Cocolapew · 21/03/2020 18:23

Driving to pick DD up and the was a group of about 6 boys, maybe aged 9/10 wandering along waving at all the cars. They thought they were hilarious Hmm

I had to go to the chemist today and people, usually so chatty are so quiet and you can feel the tension in the air. It's absolutely awful, the anticipation is dreadful.

The numbers from Italy are so awful, 600+ yesterday and 793 today. We often go to Florence and a little village about an hour away on the train. We stay in an apartment in a courtyard, at night the older ladies sit out with a glass of wine and chat. I can't even think about what might be happening there.

Iblinkedandiamold · 21/03/2020 19:09

I had to run to the shops today. My sister was going to Boots. While she was in there I was people watching. Whenever someone was going into a shop and someone was coming out you could see both hesitating. Neither wanting to get too close. It was a little funny.
Still cant believe it's only been a just over a week.

Dk20 · 21/03/2020 19:20

ROI numbers down again today, hope this keeps happening because it makes the social distancing seem worth it.

Just went to Tesco to get essentials for the baby, Tesco are doing well wiping down the trolleys baskets and tills between each person. I'm glad they have been given a raise for the next 2 months, they deserve it as does anyone who is working in a public facing role at the minute

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 21/03/2020 19:45

I'm glad they have been given a raise for the next 2 months

Oh I didn’t know this!! Fantastic! Is that a Tesco decision or an ROI govt decision?

Dk20 · 21/03/2020 19:59

Tesco announced it today, I saw it on Rte news. I hope more will follow though

7Days · 21/03/2020 20:27

I wonder is social distancing beginning to pay off? The schools have been shut for 8 days. Or is it too early to tell

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 21/03/2020 20:39

Brilliant. Well done Tesco! Hopefully others will follow the example.

mineallmine · 21/03/2020 20:47

Where I live, there were kids out playing football on the green yesterday. Husband wanted to say something to the parents but I didn't let him. I'd be ashamed to let my child out.

ElspethFlashman · 21/03/2020 22:20

The results are down but it just means results of people tested. There are loads of people on the waiting list.

The new tests came in on Thursday. So they're going to be rolled out over the next week - there are plenty of people scheduled to be tested for the past 3-4 days who are waiting for those. Then they're saying 3 or 4 days for results.

So we shouldn't get too excited cos the numbers were down today unfortunately as it's not based on the same amount of results every day.

That said, it will help with peoples perception of the crisis and yay for nobody else passing away!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Smurf123 · 21/03/2020 22:22

Really juan? About the permit.. I hadn't heard that but it would be good if they did so something more to stop people going out... Mind you actually closing schools instead of pretending they are closed would be a good start.. Someone posted recently that anyone with a statement of sen can go in.. That would be my whole school and along with the extensive Keyworker list would mean that a good proportion of all primary schools could be in...
Due to asthma im working from home but I feel bad for my colleagues and honestly for my kids and their families because we can't guarantee the hygiene and infection control with a skeleton staff and lots of kids and no hand sanitiser.. Our school order was cancelled twice already before it got this bad..

isabellerossignol · 22/03/2020 10:06

Have you seen Arlene Foster and Michelle O'Neill's joint statement about distancing on mother's day? It's perfectly sensible, but Michelle O'Neill refers to loving her mummy and wanting to keep everyone's mummy safe and all I could think was 'oooh, that would send mumsnet into meltdown, you know how people on the other side of the sea get worked up about adults referring to their mummy' Grin

Dk20 · 22/03/2020 10:18

@mineallmine that is so frustrating for everyone who is making the effort to stop this.
@ElspethFlashman yes it should help with peoples perception, I am glad the figures has came down the last 2 days and it makes me think that our efforts with social distancing are worth what we are missing out on.
@Isabella I didn't see that, adults saying mummy and daddy does make me cringe though Blush. Still the important thing is that we keep getting these messages reminding people about the importance of social distancing, especially days like today when people will be more tempted to visit their parents.

Iblinkedandiamold · 22/03/2020 10:36

Happy mother's day. Luckily I can still my parents. It's hard though because I cant see my own son half an hour away. Going to try and video call him later but he's 20 and he doesn't really like when I contact him. Funny because I was the exact same at that age. 😂. I miss him though.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/03/2020 11:25

There are lots of little things that are providing some consolation and happiness at the moment. According to RTE News 50,000 people applied to the HSE to be 'on call for Ireland'. The drive in movie place that sets up occasionally nearby is parking cars further apart and keeping going for as long as there is demand (we're going to see Stand by Me tomorrow). An Post have given every household two postcards that can be sent for free anywhere in Ireland. My favourite Chinese restaurant is doing call and collect (they normally don't do take away). DS's mental health appointment that we've waited well over a year for hasn't been cancelled (yet).
