Coronavirus in Ireland/N Ireland

beanaseireann · 27/02/2020 19:56

The first case of Coronavirus has been confirmed in Northern Ireland.
A passenger travelled from Italy to the North via Dublin.
I don't know how we will cope in the Republic if we have large numbers ill with the virus as our health service is already at breaking point.

Why do old people go up trees? We have a man who does that.

buckeejit · 18/03/2020 22:49

I actually can't believe how quickly the days are going. I have spent quite a lot of today getting organised & on stock rotation & feeding dc the out of date tinned spaghetti hoops for lunch to get them used & then getting no housework done.

I haven't even done any reading yet. Plan on that for a bit tomorrow. Today I wondered if it would all ever feel normal before it's over & if I'd start to be able to get back to sleep when I wake up early. Feel the need to start some mindfulness or yoga or some shit.

Myshitisreal · 18/03/2020 22:53

👋 Need to catch up. If anyone's in Belfast, Tesco have magically appeared quite a few shopping slots this Friday coming. Just in case it helps someone

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 18/03/2020 23:06

They days are going fast. I had planned lots of house organising, reading etc. None of it has happened. I’ve decided just to let us all have this week to decompress and let the whole situation sink in. We’re going to be in this boat for a while so no rush to do anything. One plus point- I’m actually feeling well rested for the first time in about 10 years! Grin I’m getting lots of sleep.

eggandonion · 18/03/2020 23:08

I need to get the final sliced pan out of the freezer. After that we're going to have to eat the healthy brown bread.

JaneJeffer · 18/03/2020 23:40

buckeejit I thought at first that you were up a tree keeping an eye on your neighbour Grin

eggandonion · 18/03/2020 23:55

I have reintroduced the word buckeejit into our family vocabulary.

buckeejit · 19/03/2020 00:00

Grin jakers no chance of me up a tree. I'd break it for one thing!

Egg - are you like my ma & da who'll get the loaf out of the freezer when the fresh one arrives to go in?!

One of my dad's favourite phrases when he's trying to feed people is 'it's fresh from the freezer!' (Although they do freeze bread stuff better than me)

How long do we think we will have until things start going back towards normal? I had thought start of July as an aiming point date since Wuhan just shut it's last temporary hospital so 2.5 months since kick off. Is this just silly or is there a modicum of logic in it?

Iblinkedandiamold · 19/03/2020 00:20

I find the days are dragging. The announcement made last Thursday seems ages ago. I'm eating myself out of house and home. I'm used to being busy and there's so much I should be doing but I'm watching movies and tv shows instead. I was meant to go to bed early tonight but I haven't.
I swear I will clean tomorrow.

Iblinkedandiamold · 19/03/2020 00:24

I'm also waiting for something to happen because of the call put out to tell people on hols to be home by Thursday. I'm assuming flights will be grounded but I'm waiting for something more, I dont know what though.

Dk20 · 19/03/2020 06:38

@buckeejit when it first came to Italy they were saying it would be 3 months to peak and 3 months to die down, so thatd be going until September Sad

peppersneezes000 · 19/03/2020 07:51

I'm thinking August or September too for some normality. I can't believe pennies has closed (well I can & I'm sure the workforce as very glad) I has loads of little bits to buy just leggings, comfy tops etc for the isolation, I'll be living in my PJs now🙈

Linwin · 19/03/2020 08:02

They are saying Italy numbers likely to peak early next week.

I have also great faith that the scientists will figure a treatment out soon 🙏🙏

ManorMouse · 19/03/2020 08:28

I can't believe pennies has closed

I don't know about the national picture but a friend of my SiL works in one of the Cork stores and said that they were unable to operate a containment policy due to the idiocy of a section of their customers.

Customers would crowd around the door and then push their way inside as soon as someone left the shop and would not obey any instructions on distancing once inside.

LadyEloise · 19/03/2020 08:59

JuanSheetIsPlenty
I hope when things return to normal that you will get sorted quickly. Thanks

Scary times. Sky News has it that more young people are being affected than was previously thought would be.

Iblinkedandiamold · 19/03/2020 10:05

Very strange watching tv this time in the morning. Watched Ireland am and all the presenters are sat away from each other. Now This morning is on and Phil and Holly are sitting so close together. No social distancing.

Cocolapew · 19/03/2020 10:10

Luckily I'm a lazy sod so I'm not struggling atm Grin
I'm still a bit off colour but will start on jobs I've been putting off soon. The house needs painted and a bloody good clean.
DD is buying me a jigsaw Grin, and I've joined the library online so have a good reading supply.
DH was told all his overtime is cut and hours will be too, but hopefully he will still have a job.
DD2 had just set up a nail business so is out of a job now, she's been trying to get into one of the supermarkets, but no joy yet. DD1 works in Smyths toyshop and is very busy atm, selling a lot of craft stuff and board games but I can see that dying off eventually.
It's lovely to see the sun today ☀️
Hope everyone is well and not too stressed.

Iblinkedandiamold · 19/03/2020 10:18

Oh my gosh, listening to Holly and Phil my head hurts. I'm glad our guidelines are so clear. They were talking about self isolation and school closures. They said there's no test available for covid 19. Mind boggling.

JaneJeffer · 19/03/2020 10:22

Those two are mind boggling at the best of times!

buckeejit · 19/03/2020 11:03

I've just been to the chemist & it was apocalyptic. They've built a protective wall which staff are working behind which is great but so busy-piles more prescriptions & people than normal.

Can I pls ask if you think this is ok to distribute to the houses in my estate-there's about 40 maybe & I expect most people have family help but don't want any older or vulnerable people isolated while also conscious of not being intrusive, (we usually keep to ourselves for the most part)

hope everyone is keeping well. We thought it might be helpful to connect any neighbours that might be in need of support, and anyone who is safely able to offer support if needed.

If you need assistance in collecting essential groceries or medication for doorstep delivery, or would like someone to check on you by telephone, or just for a chat, please get in touch. Or if you'd like to hold on to this number in case you may need assistance in the future, please do so.

Please telephone or text with your name & number & how we can support you - buckeejit

buckeejit · 19/03/2020 11:05

Also there's a line after get in touch to say ' if people are interested, we could set up a WhatsApp group'

Sad to say but I'm also concerned about home security down the line when things get worse ☹️

eggandonion · 19/03/2020 11:14

I think it's fine. I don't have contact details for any of my neighbours! But we did a mental audit of older people and are fairly sure they have adult children checking in with them.
St Vincent de Paul and Gaa are also on the ball.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 19/03/2020 11:42

DS (10 with SEN) keeps coming to get a hug and saying “I don’t know what’s wrong”. He feels all out of sorts but doesn’t know why.

eggandonion · 19/03/2020 12:08

That's the way I feel every morning when I wake up. My Dd1 normally works in the disability service part of the hse, but most staff are now front line care. She's scared of the new work, and worried about the kids she normally sees.
I suppose once decisions are made and we get used to our new lifestyle some of the insecurity will lessen?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 19/03/2020 12:17

Yes I hope so. It will become the new normal for a while.
