Coronavirus in Ireland/N Ireland

beanaseireann · 27/02/2020 19:56

The first case of Coronavirus has been confirmed in Northern Ireland.
A passenger travelled from Italy to the North via Dublin.
I don't know how we will cope in the Republic if we have large numbers ill with the virus as our health service is already at breaking point.

I think that in a week+ we'll be more used to it. It was last Wed that I started to get intensely worried & I feel less so now that the government are finally doing something.

@JuanSheetIsPlenty I definitely think we all have the underlying tense feeling. Dc spilled ice pop all over ds bed this avo & I had just started brushing kitchen & was so annoyed at them both (not supposed to eat in bedrooms & I'd said take the ice pops outside), & so I shouted to go back outside for 10 minutes & they both got upset. Made me realise how much I'd be trying to be breezy too.

I was so grateful that the sun peeked out today though. If we're on full lockdown, I hope the sun keeps coming out

I noticed today that everyone seems more agitated Sad
At work we have half in and half out of the office, those in the office sound so fed up and I dont blame them.
My dad is worried because he cant work as he has an underlying issue and his work have done nothing to make it safer. Hes worried about money.
My dp is fed up also, hes had to go to work to a place where 1200 people work and he is looking at the figures coming in every day and is worried - hes working away from home in Dublin so is weary of the number of cases up there.
My BIL is also panicking as he has an underlying condition and has fully self isolated.
It just feels like everyone is completely worn out from it.

7Days · 19/03/2020 18:16

Numbers not good today.

Still it is probably due in part to increased testing

Dk20 · 19/03/2020 18:21

Huge jump @7days

They just said they expected that this week and even to be up to 350 per day by the end of the week but then hopefully our social distancing etc will start having an impact on the figures

Iblinkedandiamold · 19/03/2020 18:29

Yeah massive jump there. Made me gulp a bit. I'm bored and a bit figigty now. I actually cleaned my presses today.

Dk20 · 19/03/2020 19:01

I wonder will we get a breakdown by county or will that just be a weekly thing?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 19/03/2020 19:13

Oh it was lovely. We’ve been walking around town every day but today I took them to castleward and spent a lovely couple of hours embracing the chance to do it with no time constraints. National trust have stopped all entry fees BTW if you need to get the DC out to burn off some energy.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 19/03/2020 19:16

Social distancing seems to be an optional past time here! I’ve seen people commenting about the town and shops being full of kids and teens. Even my own bloody mum is going shopping for the second time this week! Angry Food shopping but still!! Why don’t people know how stupid they’re being?

LadyEloise · 19/03/2020 19:33

Oh dear - what a jump in the nimber of cases.
Anxious dh will go into meltdown.

Dk20 · 19/03/2020 19:40

@JuanSheetIsPlenty here where I am people are being called out for still bringing kids out when it isn't necessary eg two parents bringing 4 kids out around the shops and reminding them that one parent should be staying home with the kids where possible. I hope thise people are listening.
I heard that Dunnes inLimerick have taken measures to help with the social distancing, ie only letting people in on their own, not as families.
I don't know why people are ignoring the social distancing rules still - one parent asked me if we wanted to meet for a play date for the kids

Squigean · 19/03/2020 19:40

Do we know how many of the 191 are hospitalised?

It could be more testing has taken place to some degree.

Good. Glad to hear it.

I’m getting really fed up with my local town. Kids all over the place. People in browsing trinkets in fancy shops. Clothes shops, gadget shops, e cig shops, card shops. All open. Why?? Flipping shit the shops and set the example that people shouldn’t be shopping! Also- childminders advertising spaces to take children who are out of school. And people offering babysitting services. Umm- how is that following social distancing guidelines?? No non essential contact people!! They need to close for all but the children of key workers.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 19/03/2020 19:55

shut!! Grin

LadyEloise · 19/03/2020 20:21

I despair at the stupidity and selfishness of people.

honeyrider · 19/03/2020 20:30

They gave a breakdown by county last night, I think when people are seeing low numbers in their county they're now thinking the chances of getting it are slim so are taking chances today. I've seen more people out and about today, more neighbours out chatting to each other.

Squigean · 19/03/2020 20:57

Saw that too honeyrider. What I thought odd was many of the counties in the West were

honeyrider · 19/03/2020 21:10

I reckon there's a lot of people with it and haven't been tested yet.

Deadringer · 19/03/2020 21:31

My local medical centre is closed, rumour has it that THREE of the doctors have the virus. Ffs!

chartreuse · 19/03/2020 22:28

Did anyone see Primetime? It literally gave me the chills. If you missed it watch it on the player. I wish they would just lock down now.

AngelaScandal · 19/03/2020 23:17

It was terrifying, the limerick doctor didn’t pull her punches.

Iblinkedandiamold · 19/03/2020 23:19

No, I didnt see it. Do I want to? I'm only skimming the news as I dont want to dwell on it.

DuchessDumbarton · 19/03/2020 23:50

Didn't see it.
But, I agree, there was something about seeing the low numbers that makes it seem like it's a small problem.
Whereas all the modelling suggests that if there are 7 cases in your county, there are at least 70 knocking around and probably 700 infected who haven't been aware.

I didn't go out today, so cant say that I saw people out.
But, as Leo says, the surge is coming.
The job of social distancing is to keep it as low as possible.

A bit like how , when there's a high tide+heavy rain, they let off water to reduce the overall level of flooding. Wont stop flooding, but reduces the level of damage caused.
That's what we're trying to do.

eggandonion · 20/03/2020 00:03

If you thought it was bad, the northern Ireland equivalent, the view, was terrifying. Forty years of the troubles is nothing in comparison.
Thank God they are starting to move ahead in closing things.

peppersneezes000 · 20/03/2020 00:32

I sincerely hope the limerick doctor on primetime goes viral, she didn't sugarcoat it... Very tough times ahead...

Dk20 · 20/03/2020 06:35

@squigean is that the family of 4 you're referring to from Clare? If so, they seem to be coming under the count for Limerick because they were at UL hospital.

It's only my opinion, but it seemed that the east west and south figures released up to this week referred to the county the people were tested in, not where they were from. As there were only 5 testing centres we couldn't get a detailed breakdown. But now that they are doing at home tests since this week, I hope we will start to see the proper figures by county.
