Coronavirus in Ireland/N Ireland

beanaseireann · 27/02/2020 19:56

The first case of Coronavirus has been confirmed in Northern Ireland.
A passenger travelled from Italy to the North via Dublin.
I don't know how we will cope in the Republic if we have large numbers ill with the virus as our health service is already at breaking point.

That's awful 7Days.
That poor woman married to a selfish fec*er.
The pub owners should be named and shamed and reported to the authorities including their own Vintner's Association.
It's not fair to those civic minded publicans who have closed.

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 18/03/2020 13:14

I’m self employed too, Juan, I suspect I’ll be applying soon myself.

7Days · 18/03/2020 13:16

I agree with name and shame.
Not if it's just hearsay or fb forwards. But if I knew of one in real life, I will.

Dk20 · 18/03/2020 13:34

Experts think the virus can live as long as 72 hours on some surfaces, so I will be starting to wipe down any food deliveries I get.
My work have put anyone with underlying conditions to work from home until further notice since last week.
In a bit of good news today, the next group that will be WFH are those who's family members have underlying conditions.
All this talk of clarinet has made me think I might add music lessons to ds daily schedule while hes off school. He loves structure and actually asked me to make a schedule for him (hes 6)

buckeejit · 18/03/2020 13:53

@Dk20 I'm planning to teach mine both some piano.

Dh bought me a kalimba (thumb piano) for Christmas-I made it as it had been top of my Amazon wish list for 2 years! I have accessed it & had a play this morning & it is so calming. Going to play some classical music for dc now as part of their studies...

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 18/03/2020 14:04

Ha! Nothing drives DD and I to the point of murder faster than piano practise. Grin

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 18/03/2020 14:19

SURELY the NI schools must be about to shut, if Wales and Scotland are?

Linwin · 18/03/2020 14:24

My DC school has already sent out a note saying they are shut until Friday. If you ban mass gatherings you can’t allow children to continue to go to school.
We also need to take an all Ireland approach otherwise it’s pointless.

JaneJeffer · 18/03/2020 14:25

Juan hope you get your money sorted Thanks

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 18/03/2020 14:26

Thank you jane! X

Dk20 · 18/03/2020 14:34

@buckeejit he has a little keyboard, I wrote all the letters onto it for him a few weeks ago and wrote out the notes of a few songs so hope this will be a good start for him.

@ArlenesWoodBurningStove my dp thinks he is a great keyboard player and will play the same song repeatedly, it drives me and ds insane to the point that ds hides the keyboard from him Grin

600+ cases in the UK today, that was a big increase Sad

buckeejit · 18/03/2020 14:47

I've been keeping off the news so far today & feeling better for it-feel like I know well enough how bad it could be. Would like to find information on what type of breathing helps (if any particular type), when infected. I've been worried for ages & bought a nebuliser as ds has asthma & has been on one quite a bit in past when hospitalised, (thankfully hasn't been that bad for a while)

Even though I am the one that constantly nags ds to practise his clarinet, the skitter always follows me to whatever room I go to so I have to endure his practice 🙄

LadyEloise · 18/03/2020 15:25

Sky News has it that all schools in Scotland and Wales are to close.
Why not Northern Ireland and England ???

I don't understand the logic.

SlayingDragons · 18/03/2020 17:17

Finally!!! My DS’s school has actually announced that school would be closed to forms 1-4 anyway, but now they are closed to everyone. As a school staff member I am delighted. I do totally understand the concerns but what we were going through each day was totally unsustainable.

Cocolapew · 18/03/2020 17:21

At last!

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 18/03/2020 17:38

Very welcome news! Long overdue. Arlene won’t act if boris doesn’t. Pathetic. She has no gumption at all. She doesn’t serve England- she serves NI. She needs to start acting like it.

(Also for those asking- I’ve managed to get a discretionary payment to tide me over. Not much but will definitely help.)

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 18/03/2020 17:39

There's some confusion going on. Our school has emailed to say that they saw on the news that closure is immediate for children, and then they emailed again to say that the news is now announcing that Friday will be the last day.

SegregateMumBev · 18/03/2020 18:37

No pupils from tomorrow (Thursday), but teachers still required Thursday and Friday.

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 18/03/2020 18:46

Is that just your school, Bev? Arlene is quoted as saying schools close from Monday.

SegregateMumBev · 18/03/2020 18:48

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-51950900

Sorry, here's the correction about pupils stopping from tomorrow.

buckeejit · 18/03/2020 19:01

@juan that's good news. Still older people ignoring it all. Just been keeping an eye on my (I thought sensible) neighbour up a tree ffs. He's about 70.

Just read they're hoping to keep deaths below 20,000?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 18/03/2020 19:46

That’s quite a shocking figure and gives us an idea of how long they expect it to continue for when the death toll currently sits at just over 100! Italy is by far the worst affected country and currently has a few thousand deaths. We are in this for the long haul. 12 weeks is just the beginning.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 18/03/2020 20:01

Btw: now that I’m out of work- does anyone have another excuse for why my house is still a tip? Grin

Iblinkedandiamold · 18/03/2020 20:10

I wish, my house is also a tip. I'm pacing myself? I dont even have any children at home to blame. I keep saying, tomorrow I'll get up, get dressed and do some house work. Tomorrow never comes.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 18/03/2020 20:24

Same! We’re all in shock, surely? Wink
