what is your monthly electricity bill and how big is your house?

Im trying to get an idea of whether what we use is normal for the size of our house. I've been making real efforts to reduce the amount of electricity we use but it's still going to be over £100 this month. DC have just gone back to uni and so it should drop a bit next month but not dramatically.

We’re looking at getting one now we have an EV as we export most of our solar at a lousy 5p. So once we have the battery I’ll move to a better octopus tariff and better SEG tariff.

I had a look on Reddit on the U.K. Solar sub and it’s very helpful. With some number crunching I expect the battery cost (approx £5k as we don’t need a large battery) to be recouped within 5 years. With your costs per month I’d expect you to recoup much quicker. I’d recommend getting a couple of quotes at least, we only use approx 2300 kw per year so quite low usage. That will go up with the EV but we are only charging from solar currently so it’s in effect free.

Thank you. We are using around 12,000 units a year.
Ive messaged a company for a quote today- thank you for your help

Good luck! Just a quick note quotes vary hugely depending on battery brand etc. One co quoted £4,400 and also £8k lol for an expensive though not necessarily better brand!

Combined bill, DD is £60 pm and am currently £95 in credit.

3 bed terrace, 1 bath, 1 me. Washing machine, shower, dishwasher, GCH, home all day every day.

hcee19 · 02/10/2025 23:15

5 bed detached 3 bathrooms upstairs one shower room downstairs. All my cooking is done on electric hob & ovens. Have 3 freezers, one fridge, and dd who permanently has on a hairdryer, straighteners and curling wands, plugged in... Phones on charge nearly all the time, we shpwer daily, there's four of us..l am with Octopus and it has just gone up from £162 a month for dual gas and electricity, to £195 a month. Got just over £600 in credit, which will be used when it becomes cold. As yet, we haven't had the heating on, so not doing too bad

GustavMunchkin · 02/10/2025 23:29

I think what’s so out of order for energy bills is the standing charge. I understand what is for just feels unfair. You can’t save much more once you’re doing virtually everything you can to reduce actual usage.

mondaytosunday · 02/10/2025 23:58

I pay £100/month for both gas and electricity. I think it’s a 40/60 split. Three bed terraced house.

Snippit · 03/10/2025 00:59

4 bed 1960’s detached house, electric oven. We have a South facing roof with 8 solar panels that were installed under the ECO4 scheme (free of charge)

The electricity averaged £68 a month, it is half of this now with the panels. I don’t have a battery so need to sort out payments for the unused power to go to the grid, EON currently offering approximately 16p pkwh.

Is it because it's set to expected usage? What's your actual usage a month?

Not sure, I submit my readings online at the beginning of each month, so I suppose they know what I have been using.

Btowngirl · 03/10/2025 11:07

About £100 a month for gas & electric. 3 bedroom house and 2 adults and 2 children. We have electric shower/oven etc.

That's just so high for 2 people in my eyes😱

lilkitten · 03/10/2025 13:21

We have two adults and two teenagers (one of whom has home tuition so he's in the house most of the time). 2 bedroom house, usually £60 a month. Tumble dryer, electric oven, usually 3 PCs on at once. We do have a fixed rate tariff ending soon.

I agree. I would hate to think they had us mixed up with the family of 6 next door, but I am submitting my readings...

dementedpixie · 03/10/2025 15:09

I submitted readings yesterday and usage for last month was about £40 gas and £230 electricity. 2 adults, 2 teens, electric car, 4 bed detached in Scotland

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 03/10/2025 15:14

Single occupant, electric only, two bed mid terrace house and I pay around £80 per month averaged out (I pay monthly for what I use). I have no heating on and no hot water - just electric shower and I boil a kettle for hot water. It was too expensive to heat an entire immersion tank of water which I never used all of, so I turned it off. I wear an Oodie to keep me warm and light the logburner when it's really cold. The electric heating (ie, the one radiator in the living room) goes on maybe a dozen times a year.

Not much as I can see: 1st April to end of June 2240 gas, 800 electric. On what, I know not.

RaraRachael · 03/10/2025 15:49

Around £60 per month for 2 people in a 2 bedroom house with me at home all day

FluffyBenji23 · 03/10/2025 16:36

Three bed detached with mostly only me. £160 per month gas and electricity and I'm at work all week!

I think something is chewing on your energy especially when you would rarely have heating on Apr-June! I wouldn't want to see what gas use you have in winter😱
This would bug the hell out of me if it were my bills. We have naturally somehow low consumption even with me wfh.
Do you have smart meter? I found Octopus app quite helpful tbh. Tracked that the bloody oven is the biggest culprit when it comes to electricity usage. Can't think of what could be secretly eating on gas though.

When we plugged in the little smart meter last year, we found it was the electric oil heater costing us a fortune. About £60 a month! It was supposed to only be about 6p an hour according to the box.

OhMehGoddess · 04/10/2025 15:40

3 bed semi. Last month was £88 for electric only. Gas gives us heating/ shower and hob/oven.

I use the tumble drier as needed, but not when I can dry outside.

MCF86 · 04/10/2025 16:10

Just checked, electric was £35 in august, we were away a week but also at home more than normal the rest of the month. 2 bed flat. Only gas we have is the heating.

WittyTaupeFox · 04/10/2025 17:42

If you’re trying to reduce your costs ask your supply company about your overnight tariff and set your appliances to come on during those times - so set the washing machine and dish washer on delay timers to start at 3am as an example. Can also do this with your electric heaters to heat your home when asleep and then you wake to warmer house.

solar panels and a huge battery have made our home very cost effective.

also prioritise great insulation & effective heating systems if you’re wanting to reduce costs over the long term.

WittyTaupeFox · 04/10/2025 17:44

Oh and if your husband is using PlayStation that is consumption heavy so id be encouraging a stop (or drop) in that! 😉

marmitencrumpets · 04/10/2025 17:55

Depends on time of year but between £250 and £550 a month, gas and electricity combined.
