Im trying to get an idea of whether what we use is normal for the size of our house. I've been making real efforts to reduce the amount of electricity we use but it's still going to be over £100 this month. DC have just gone back to uni and so it should drop a bit next month but not dramatically.

4 bed detached, gas central heating, usually around 130 a month

mamagogo1 · 01/10/2025 17:52

£38 last month but we have gas hot water and hob. Kids left home

flapjackfairy · 01/10/2025 17:56

We live in an old 5 bed with a large family. 2 children have complex needs so lots of washing of bedding, tumble drying etc etc. Also we have to keep the house warm for health reasons. We have bought good windows and insulated as much as possible.
Our costs are v high
We are spending 11 quid a day at present but that will go up once the gas heating is on more.
It is ridiculous but we have no other .choice than to pay it.

HPD76 · 01/10/2025 17:56

Two bed terrace, my electricity is about £45 and gas currently £10. I’m very frugal with it and live by myself 50% of the time so tend to make do a lot with solar lamps and warm blankets when it’s just me.

ThirstyMeeples · 01/10/2025 17:58

Our seems so expensive! 5 bed old stone house. Always cold. £570 a month. We do have an electric car.

isthesolution · 01/10/2025 17:59

£115 a month-ish. 5 bed detached. Gas heating. 2 electric cars. Electric oven. Induction hob. We don’t have a tumble dryer.

I live in Ireland , our bills are every 2 months , mine is always in around 480 euro ..
I have a 3 bed house , electric shower , cooker , no dryer , my heating is air to water ( it’s amazing ) ! , that’s electric too , I’m happy with my bill 🤷🏻‍♀️

Crikeyalmighty · 01/10/2025 18:00

Around £88 in summer and around £180 in winter ( 2 big rooms have electric underfloor heating and not the kind that feeds off our central heating which is gas - rented house so can’t change it - 4 bed stone built semi, H at home a lot with multiple screens on all day

TheFairyCaravan · 01/10/2025 18:01

Over the Summer it’s been around £60 a month. We live in 4 bed detached, but there’s only two of us, I’m at home all day and we have an electric vehicle.

MardyAnn · 01/10/2025 18:02

£475 a month for electricity and gas. It’s our second largest expense. Food is first.

GreenGodiva · 01/10/2025 18:05

I live in a 2 up 2 down, a stone built miners cottage in the nw. I pay £90 a month electric and I use an electric oven, tumble dryer, run a large fish tank, plant lights and a 3d printer. I pay £90 gas and only have the heating on (if needed) from 1st October to 1st April unless it’s horrifically cold. My water is £37.

DarkTreesWhisper · 01/10/2025 18:08

It really isn't anything to do with the size of the house but how many things you have that consume electricity. For example Dh has a laptop and 2 monitors and works from home 3 days a week. Eldest Ds has the same work set up as Dh. When youngest Ds is here and not at uni, he has a laptop and one monitor. I just have a computer and one monitor. None of that would change if we had one less bedroom.

It is all the charging of phones, watches, electric toothbrushes, ipads, everything just adds up. Plus Sky boxes, Xbox or PlayStations, tvs, laptops, plus kitchen appliances, washing machines and tumble dryers, dishwashers, coffee machines, undercab lighting in the kitchen as well as normal lights, outside lights, all just add up. It is a bit like when you go round Ikea and this item is £2 or this is £4 and you get to the till and all of a sudden you have spent £78!

For reference, we use £184 a month in electric, we are in a 4 bed house with 4 reception rooms - lounge, dining, and 2 studies. There are 4 adults living here.

LavenderViolets · 01/10/2025 18:09

2 bed detached bungalow with 2 adults. No WFH so very low usage in the day and mostly used on the evenings. We pay £128 monthly DD but just checked last month and we paid £42 for elec but we have solar. Goes up of course in winter quite a lot so now looking at getting a battery.

Size of property is a guide but a lot depends on its insulation/age.

Whyamiherenow · 01/10/2025 18:09

We live in an area without gas so we have oil heating which we fill the tank up about 3 times a year for about £350/£400 - so around £100 a month. Our electric is currently £103 a month and we are £106 in credit. I think around December they will put it up to around £120. We are a family of 3.5 ish (dsd half a week plus mother in law comes for tea 2-3 times a week). I work from home full time. So that includes working costs etc. we don’t actively try and conserve energy etc. ie we just use what we want. We don’t have solar panels and we don’t have an electric car.

kelsaecobbles · 01/10/2025 18:12

Ours is a four bed detached but it’s not that big either. 2/3 years ago it was around £100 a month

Nellieinthebarn · 01/10/2025 18:38

I pay £100 a month, no gas or oil, its all electric heating (air pump) hot water and cooking, and logs for extra heat in the sitting room in winter. Also the log burner the only heating in the event of a power cut. 5 bedroom house. I keep the heating to come on when it gets to below 20 degrees. So I don't have it really warm, but its comfortable enough.

We have solar panels, so over pay for most of the year, and also export in the summer, so I can build up money in my account for winter. Going into winter this year I have just over £500 credit, this will be used up by March.

lindyloo57 · 01/10/2025 18:44

3 bed semi 2 adults we pay £115 for gas and electric
