what is your monthly electricity bill and how big is your house?

Im trying to get an idea of whether what we use is normal for the size of our house. I've been making real efforts to reduce the amount of electricity we use but it's still going to be over £100 this month. DC have just gone back to uni and so it should drop a bit next month but not dramatically.

I live in a two bedroom large apartment with high ceilings. No gas so all heating is electric. In summer (no heating) £100 per month. In winter with heating it can be £400-£500 a month.

Olive567 · 01/10/2025 19:18

Two bed, £70 per month for gas/ electricity. I am quite frugal.

SuchiRolls · 01/10/2025 19:19

3 bed end terrace, family of 5 and we have an electric car. Electric is about £120 a month at the moment, and Gas £25. The electric will go up slightly over winter but I use the tumble dryer during the lower rate period overnight and it’s a heat pump one. Central heating in of course so that goes up. But the electric won’t change much.

Pollypickme · 01/10/2025 20:01

Family of 5 in a 5 bed detached all electric house. We have solar panels but still pay £75 a month in the summer and up to £500 a month in the winter. I’d never recommend an all electric house, the costs are INSANE

Foolsgold74 · 01/10/2025 20:03

3 bed house. Elec monthly bill is about £35.

CrimsonStoat · 01/10/2025 20:10

For the last six months electric has been around £20 a month, and gas £10 including standing charges. Selling solar back to Octopus seems to on average knock £10 off a month.

Gas cooker, gas CH, electric everything else.

I've started to have an occasional bit of heating on so it'll goup now, but have £300 credit as I pay £85 a month.

Central heating is new, so don't know exactly how much bills will be over winter.

AllTheChatsAboutTea · 01/10/2025 20:17

£242 direct debit for gas and electricity with Octopus. 3 bed semi with 2 adults 1 teen.

For a long time I’ve been confused by our electricity consumption. We’re averaging 6000 kW a year which is huge. I don’t think we have any more devices than an average family. Teenager is inclined to use the tumble dryer. I have the hot tub on a handful of times over the summer. Logfire and electric blankets in the winter to save on heating.

Getting a smart meter installed later this month so I can figure out WTF is going on!

Blablibladirladada · 01/10/2025 20:49

60-70£ per month, 3 bed semi detached…

Have you looked at getting a battery installed as you already have solar?

No, not really. I thought they were very expensive. Do you have a battery?

We’re looking at getting one now we have an EV as we export most of our solar at a lousy 5p. So once we have the battery I’ll move to a better octopus tariff and better SEG tariff.

I had a look on Reddit on the U.K. Solar sub and it’s very helpful. With some number crunching I expect the battery cost (approx £5k as we don’t need a large battery) to be recouped within 5 years. With your costs per month I’d expect you to recoup much quicker. I’d recommend getting a couple of quotes at least, we only use approx 2300 kw per year so quite low usage. That will go up with the EV but we are only charging from solar currently so it’s in effect free.

boredwfh · 01/10/2025 22:53

£260!! 4 bed, solar panels, electric car. EPC A. Should be £190 but we are in arrears for underpaying when we first moved in. Also only just gone on an EV tariff & saw £30 difference in elec last month. 3 adults, 1 teenager & a child, washing machine on everyday if not twice, dishwasher on twice, tue drier a couple times a week. Both wfh 5 days a week. I think it goes down when eldest goes back to uni and we have less washing to do!

TeenLifeMum · 01/10/2025 22:59

Our gas and electric combined is £118 for 5 people 2 adults and 3 teen girls constantly showering, washing machine and dryer constantly on, charging phones etc. house is 4 bed detached with 3 reception rooms plus garage with fridge freezer and treadmill. I’m surprised it’s not more.

That’s very high compared to ours. We got rid of our hot tub last year (after 7 years we weren’t really using it much) but it’s had a minimal impact on electricity as we had it on all the time and it was very well insulated.

Higglea · 01/10/2025 23:04

4 bed detached, £50-£70 (winter) per month

Wow, that's a LOT! We're on 9,500kWh a year, but that's running one electric car (about 5000 miles/year) and fully electric CH and hot water via a heat pump.

I'm expecting about £175/month averaged across the whole year, as a big chunk of it goes onto the nightime rate.

4 bed detached, reasonably well insulated now, but 1920s build.

£250 a month, 4 adults (1gamer and 1wfh) and 1 child. For electricity and gas combined. With octopus. It feels very high.

We are paying almost that for just 2 of us in a 3 bed semi with Octopus. Both at work all day and in bed by 10, heating rarely on, no tumble dryer. I have no idea why it is so high.

RobinEllacotStrike · 02/10/2025 07:42

£50 electric in September - 3 bed one adult, 2 teens.

our hot water & heating is gas.

my monthly dd is £130 & the summer overpay covers higher energy use in winter.

£145 a month includes small amount of overpayment

Spiderseverywherenow · 02/10/2025 08:07

It is better to talk usage rather than bill. Or combo of both. We use approx 130kwh a month. 2 of us in 3bed. Plus standing charge about 50 a month.
We do have extra freezer

Jmaho · 02/10/2025 08:09

Pay just under £300 a month for gas and electric
4 bed detached house built about 25 years ago
Both mainly wfh, use oven daily, one electric car

bedwater · 02/10/2025 08:12

WFH, one adult, one child, 2 bed flat (draughty and old), £95 a month gas and elec combined. I think I have built up a bit of cash over the summer though

Is it because it's set to expected usage? What's your actual usage a month?

SurvivalInstinctsOfABakedPotato · 02/10/2025 08:29

2 bed terrace just me and teenager. Pre payment key meter and it's about 150 just for electric a month.
I do run a dehumidifier a lot as it gets damp. Just had smart meter installed and see now where it goes. Lights and charging things are next to nothing

Electric shower is about £2.70 an hour so by far the most expensive thing to run so have limited shower times.

Oven is next thing so use the air fryer a lot.
Dehumidifier is about 12p an hour

I guess it just all adds up but I like the pre payment as I never have to worry about a bill etc

Janeeyrre · 02/10/2025 08:30

£12/14 electricity use in summer per month plus £18.00 standing charge.

3 bed small new build semi I live on my own.

Just remembered sept it's been up to £22 electricity as ive been using a fan heater in evenings for a short while in my bedroom. I don't have a tumble dryer but thinking of getting one so that would increase it obvs, same as winter using lights more and being at home more.
