what is your monthly electricity bill and how big is your house?

Im trying to get an idea of whether what we use is normal for the size of our house. I've been making real efforts to reduce the amount of electricity we use but it's still going to be over £100 this month. DC have just gone back to uni and so it should drop a bit next month but not dramatically.

We pay £260pm gas and electric, 4 bed detached, use log burner in the winter.
We do have lots of solar panels and are on a very, very old tarif so get around £3k back every year.

GreenMarigold · 02/10/2025 08:45

4 bed mid terrace, £120 a month for electric. No gas. Includes electric car, dishwasher every night and tumble dryer once a week.

CrepuscularCritter · 02/10/2025 08:54

Pretty sure we are an outlier, but less than £20 per month. We have electric oven, dishwasher, tumble drier, but gas heating. 8 bed semi, 2 adults, me at home at the moment because injured. Solar panels have reduced the bills from £50ish per month to nothing for 6 months of the year.

CaptainSevenofNine · 02/10/2025 09:07

3 bedroom semi detached. Scotland. Total bill £120.08 every month

Split so far £75 electricity and £25 gas (we’ve got a credit of £180 in our account and rising)

Electric oven and hob. Gas powered heating and hot water (including shower though we have the option of electric shower).

Electric use high because our towel radiator is duel fuel and we have it running on a timer on electricity.

PositivityVibes · 02/10/2025 09:22

£150 per month on direct debit for both gas and electric with Octopus on their fixed tariff.

4 bed detached, 4 adults - just looked at recent electric bill, I submit monthly meter readings, roughly £50 on usage and £20 on standing charge.

bedwater · 02/10/2025 09:34

Note: I don't think it's that helpful for posters to state their house size without also stating how many adults / children live there. You might have a 4 bed house with only two adults, for example. it's all about context.

tedibear · 02/10/2025 09:55

Currently £145 we pay this 12 months of the year so it builds up a credit over summer. Not sure if split between gas/elec. It was up at £230 a couple of yrs ago. It seems so low now but at the moment seems to be enough. Will prob need to go up though as prices have increased.
5 bedroom detached house. Heating at the moment is on 1hr morning and 1 hr night. Once it gets proper cold it’s on pretty much all day. Usually around 10-12hrs. Also have a tumble drier in daily use.

llittledoveblue · 02/10/2025 10:00

£53 last month for electricity
£26 for gas

4 bed detached - 2 adults 2 children both primary age.
we are with octopus! I find them very reasonable. I do have a referral code which gets you £50 if you switch to them. Happy to share if anyone wants it

Panicmode1 · 02/10/2025 10:03

I give Octopus £194 a month and we have some credit currently (+/- £500) - our electricity is about 120 a month, gas about 20 in the summer and significantly more in the winter. We have a four bed, poorly insulated Edwardian semi, and between 4 and 6 people here depending on uni terms.

Our range is now gas hobs and electric ovens - used to be all gas and that's made a big difference to our electricity consumption....

We do try and be careful - and don't have the heating on until we really need to, and I'm always turning lights off...but it seems high...and with no prospect of being cheaper any time soon!

Ariela · 02/10/2025 10:29

Compact 4 bed, oil (£560 for 18 months yay it's loads cheaper than 2014!! Wish we could buy electricity at the 'current price on the day' OR our direct debit to pay EXACTLY what the bill is....why do they HAVE to hold credit when it's on a direct debit? ), solar and £89/month hideously in credit BUT they say I have to have a month's bill in hand won't let me go lower and I reckon I'll be 3 months in credit by March going on last year's usage!

EachFallenRobin · 02/10/2025 10:48

@Sashh as far as I know there aren't any social tariffs for fuel.

JBJ · 02/10/2025 11:01

£83 last month with Octopus. 3 bed semi, electric shower, electric oven/hob, tumble dryer on a lot, teenager who rarely switches his pc off and menopausal me who has a ceiling fan on most of the time, including all night, every night!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 02/10/2025 11:04

Just under £100 for gas and electric in a 3 bed semi for two of us. Electric oven, combi boiler.

WinterNightStars · 02/10/2025 12:01

Last month was £65 electric, £20 gas. 2 adults, 3 bed detached, charge 2 electric vehicles on cheap overnight tariff, husband WFH 3/4 days a week, no tumble dryer but use a dehumidifier, gas central heating & log burner for heating.

Clutterbugsmum · 02/10/2025 12:51

Exactly. We pay well over £250 on Electricity with solar and batteries, but we a family of 5 youngest 16, DH and DC all gamers.

DH works from home 3 days a week, but as a IT person runs his own servers and god knows how many other it bits and pieces.

For us Electricity is just a cost we have. Gas is less then £30.

Buxusmortus · 02/10/2025 12:59

4 bed house, live alone and here most of the time as retired. Electric oven but gas hob, 1 TV, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer ( hang out if I can), rarely use microwave, one PC. Electricity usage is fairly stable all year round and costs about 45 to 50 a month.

Willowcat77 · 02/10/2025 13:13

Nellieinthebarn · 01/10/2025 18:38

I pay £100 a month, no gas or oil, its all electric heating (air pump) hot water and cooking, and logs for extra heat in the sitting room in winter. Also the log burner the only heating in the event of a power cut. 5 bedroom house. I keep the heating to come on when it gets to below 20 degrees. So I don't have it really warm, but its comfortable enough.

We have solar panels, so over pay for most of the year, and also export in the summer, so I can build up money in my account for winter. Going into winter this year I have just over £500 credit, this will be used up by March.

@NellieinthebarnThat sounds pretty good for a 5 bedroom house! We have just installed solar panels and a heat pump, so am curious how it's going to work out costwise. Do you have good insulation? We have solid stone walls but also installed some internal insulation at the same time as the solar panels...

Panicmode1 · 02/10/2025 13:39

Coincidentally, I've just had my latest bill emailed and am somewhat shocked by how high the standing charges are. I know they've been creeping up but my actual monthly gas bill is £31.39 and my standing charges are £8.88 so by my calculations that's over 20% of the bill!! (Electricity was £94.69 and £13.33,.so slightly more manageable at ish 12%)

Spiderseverywherenow · 02/10/2025 13:51

That's a cheap standing charge! Mine is 58p foe electric. 29p for gas😭

Edited

I'll stop complaining then 😂😂

My gas is the same as yours (29.59p) but electricity is 44p

Fridaysgirl17 · 02/10/2025 14:20

I'm in Ireland & we have recently moved so getting used to everything here but we are a 2 bedroom end of terrace house,2 young kids, I paid €74 last month & according to my bill insights I'm on track for that again maybe a few euro more but I have used the washing machine/dryer a bit more this month as weather has dipped & I can't hang clothes out & I need to leave a light on at night in the bathroom as kids are adjusting to new house.

autienotnaughty · 30/09/2025 18:25

£250 a month, 4 adults (1gamer and 1wfh) and 1 child. For electricity and gas combined. With octopus. It feels very high.

Ours is similar, 3 adults, 3 children (2 WFH) it's painful but usage hasn't changed much for years (the cost has just gone up 😭).

Aikko · 02/10/2025 18:12

2 bed Victorian mid-terrace.

September bill was:
£39 electricity
£17 gas

Emcolmol · 02/10/2025 19:19

£40 a month. 2 bed maisonette, tumble dryer on 5 days a week, 3 tvs in the house, PS5 on every day

LBOCS2 · 02/10/2025 19:28

Ours hovers around the £100 a month mark, with 5 of us in a good sized 4 bed semi. We have gas for heating and hobs but the oven is electric, we use the tumble dryer all year around, and I WFH full time with DH here 3 days a week.
