Cost of shampoo

I went to get some purple shampoo and conditioner in Superdrug yesterday and was shocked that it's now £6 bottle! All the other types seem to be about this price too.
I usually buy on special offer and store them so haven't had to purchase any for about a year!
Yes I know I can buy cheaper brands but they don't work as well.

Seems reasonable to me. I pay about £7 for a bottle of t-gel shampoo and it lasts me about a month.

I think that it's because last time I bought it was only £4. I guess that's gone up as well as everything else.

Yes things have gone up in price, but things do that anyway over time. Maybe you can find bigger bottles online that are better value?

MarchingintoSpring · 04/03/2025 15:36

I’ve tried countless bottles of shampoo and always goes back to Vo5 which is about £1.20 a bottle.
Savers is cheaper so maybe try there.

I think I remember this being about the same price for years! Then increasing lots in a short time.
I've managed to find some cheaper online.

Yes forgot about Savers! Will try that too.

I like the schwarzkopf live silver shampoo which is about £3 a tube. I usually stock up at Home bargains. Savers is another good place to look though doesn't stock that one.

I used to use the t-gel with salicylic acid for my gunky scalp but discovered that vosene works just as well at £2-£2.50 a bottle. It has quite a simple ingredients list so nothing irritating for me.

Thanks - need something purple to tone down the orange but could maybe use a cheaper brand in between washes.

@PickAChew
I don't think I've used Vosene since I was 8! Many years ago!

They sell it at whatever price people are willing to pay. You can buy generic purple shampoo from Poundland

RuffledKestrel · 04/03/2025 16:27

Change to a shampoo bar (yes you can get purple ones)

Most easily last 3 or 4 times longer than a bottle for me. I normally pick up bars priced around £4-6

It's purple. Very purple! It gives my salt and pepper hair a nice sheen and staves off the beigeness.

allstarsuperstar · 04/03/2025 16:29

Ditch it. No one needs it. Use conditioner if you must, but you don't need anything really.

dottydodah · 04/03/2025 16:30

I shop around .Sometimes Asda or Sainsburys Even Boots are cheaper .Seem to take in turns or you can get 3 for 2 offers as well.Same for mouthwash sensodyne 5.50 normally 3 for 2 means effectively 1 free

stayathomer · 04/03/2025 16:31

Shampoo was my biggest shock when prices jumped. I work in a supermarket and people now only buy what’s on deal now

Sounds interesting- can you recommend a brand please?

I think with the 3 for 2 they seem to just bump the price up!
I had a look in Boots and the same shampoo was more expensive than Superdrug.

So it's definitely jumped a lot in price and quickly too?

I think £6 is not expensive. That's not much more than a big latte at Starbucks and that's a one off thing. Shampoo lasts weeks.

stayathomer · 04/03/2025 16:52

Am in Ireland but yes it flew up- noticed first that 2 for x was shocking- x was a practically unachievable price! A shampoo for eg three something suddenly jumped to a fiver then suddenly practically none were under a fiver. Was the first time I got a proper sick feeling over col

CaptainAwkward · 04/03/2025 16:53

I sometimes get some purple hair dye drops (about £5) and add a couple of drops to shampoo/conditioner

Works out loads cheaper and lasts longer plus you can adjust how much toning you need

Well maybe not for you! I can't afford Starbucks either!

I don't tend to stick to a particular brands but been using "Rosemary Shampoo Bar 2 Pack" from Amazon for the last 5 months (yea, 2 bars have lasted me that long).
Bathing beauties is another place I buy them, they do a whole range.
