Cost of shampoo

I went to get some purple shampoo and conditioner in Superdrug yesterday and was shocked that it's now £6 bottle! All the other types seem to be about this price too.
I usually buy on special offer and store them so haven't had to purchase any for about a year!
Yes I know I can buy cheaper brands but they don't work as well.

I agree. I accept that things have to increase a bit in cost, but it's the % increase I find hard to accept. Both the body wash and shampoo/conditioner I use doubled in cost overnight, and so I now have to buy cheap brands unless I see my usual ones on offer (not often)

BurntBroccoli · 04/03/2025 20:18

Thanks @RuffledKestrel I'll look into those.

Yes I know - I think if you don't buy something everyday like bread (which has also crept up gradually) then it's more of a shock!

I'm sure home bargains has purple shampoo for a good price! Can't remember exactly what but much cheaper

faithspikebuffy · 04/03/2025 23:47

Not purple but I really like the Aldi volume shampoo and conditioner

I think £6 is not expensive. That's not much more than a big latte at Starbucks and that's a one off thing. Shampoo lasts weeks.

It's very expensive.
OP don't buy toiletries at superdrug and boots, they are a rip off.. get from poundland, bodycare, savers etc. I only pay £1 a bottle

HollyBerryz · 05/03/2025 00:23

I use shampoo bars now and was very shocked when i saw the price of some shampoo in boots recently. My kids use the apple shampoo from Tesco which is cheap or alberto balsam.

JadededViewer · 05/03/2025 01:21

i get tescos cheap brands

Savewell · 05/03/2025 21:07

I use clean products so 3 females we wash long hair daily Sukin shampoo on Amazon 1 L £10.75 or tkmaxx similar price it last for 2 months or longer and no chemicals.

Dueanamechange2025 · 05/03/2025 21:30

I’ve found deodorant to have really jumped up. I used to always stock up when it was on offer at £1 a tin and now it’s always £2.50+.

paintedwallpaper · 07/03/2025 20:09

I use faith in nature - you can get huge 5l bottles for £40

I think Ocado, Holland and Barrett and more sell them.

Works out super cheap and lasts for about 3 years.

paintedwallpaper · 07/03/2025 20:10

For those interested you can also use unusual stuff to wash your hair more gently - such as chickpea flour mixed with water, or chickpea brine from a can stuff like that. It works for a gentle wash every so often.

PickAChew · 07/03/2025 21:11

Hair bhaji. Yum.

Xraytime · 07/03/2025 21:16

Poundland

UpTheLaganInABubble1 · 07/03/2025 21:20

I've not especially noticed it with shampoo as I tend to just buy whatever is on offer.

Definitely noticing it with other things though.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 07/03/2025 21:25

Pound shop, Savers or Home bargains.
Currently using Alberto Balsam shampoo bar from £1 shop.
Boots own brand shampoo is 75p

Squirrelsnut · 07/03/2025 21:26

Soap nuts are about £7 a bag, which can make gallons of gentle shampoo. They work really well.

SnoopysHoose · 07/03/2025 21:31

Superdrug have it at £2.99 members price

Cost of shampoo
KimFan · 07/03/2025 21:32

Yep. Average price for drugstore shampoo…

Fargo79 · 07/03/2025 21:39

It's ridiculously expensive now. People just accept it though, so they keep taking the piss. Bog standard brands like Herbal Essence, Pantene etc never used to be anything like the prices they are now in comparison to other grocery items.

I'm very all-or-nothing so occasionally I'll splash out on my favourite shampoo which is over £30 a bottle, but when I'm not using that I will buy £1 Alberto Balsam. It's crap and it only lasts me a week, much less than my expensive shampoo. But I think the mid range shampoos are only very marginally better and I'm not prepared to pay 6, 7, 8 X the price for only marginally better performance.

Shampoo was my biggest shock when prices jumped. I work in a supermarket and people now only buy what’s on deal now

That’s me!

Moominsmoo · 07/03/2025 22:10

I found this…and I drop in a few drops of scented oil., I’d love to say aromatherapy oils but at the moment it’s left over oil from m and s that was to scent the room! My theory is that when body shop first opened, you could buy the basic shampoo and choose from litttle bottles of scented oils that you could add.

I also dissolve salt into water and spray it on for instant very cheap beach curls ( I did buy some beach curl spray and it was just this with scent)

And a hairdresser friend told me to use any oil , doesn’t have to be fancy. She rubs a teen y bit of olive oil through her hair while it’s damp. She’s been know to rub hand cream, and cream she doesn’t use any more, e45, whatever,, in and has a really glossy healthy head of hair.

The hairdressers friends mum was a chemist, she said it’s all packaging - e45 is as good as any face cream, and olive oil is very good rubbed into dry skin or left overnight on dry hair, especially dry dandruff scalp.
she may have a point- I picked up a super pricey, beautifully packaged exfoliating thing -and it was basically ground porridge oats with some salt and scent.

i get really good strong nails when I rub Vaseline in.
id still love to buy Aesop and all the other fancy makes though!

Interesting about choosing your own scent for shampoo.
I do actually use E45 as a bedtime moisturiser- it works really well for older drier skin. May be a bit greasy for younger people. I also bought a huge tub of Astral for the other nights. Again, greasy but very moisturising.

Aussie silver shampoo is £3.80 on offer at ASDA if that helps.

Moominsmoo · 08/03/2025 07:07

Thanks for the tip burnt broccoli I’ll try astral. And of course grannies always used ponds cold cream which seems to work well too! Trouble with these things is you can’t tell if they’ve worked till 20 years later!
adding your own scent was the body shops selling point - you’d take your bottle back, refill it with the basic shampoo and add the scent. Blimey I am old!
