I went to get some purple shampoo and conditioner in Superdrug yesterday and was shocked that it's now £6 bottle! All the other types seem to be about this price too.
I usually buy on special offer and store them so haven't had to purchase any for about a year!
Yes I know I can buy cheaper brands but they don't work as well.

I discovered my ds has been using my Ouai shampoo when he came in after his shower smelling really good 😂 at £30 a bottle it lasts me ages so doesn’t seem bad value until a 13 year old starts using massive amounts of it daily! I’ve bought him a decoy cheap tresemme and told him it’s his special one. It was pretty reasonable considering he goes through it very quickly and also doesn’t give a shit about shine/body/volume!

Missionimprobable · 08/03/2025 20:29

Ooh I've just had this conversation.
Went to Superdrug today, bought a bottle of Aussie purple shampoo and purple conditioner, £3.99 each (half price) with the members card.
Got to the till and they both came up as £7.99 each.
Questioned it and they reduced them to the £3.99 stated on the shelf ticket.
Really naughty, this happened last week too in Superdrug, you need to keep a watch on it at the till. Apparently, the till system hadn't caught up 🙄 got told that both weeks.
Anyhoo, Aussie purple shampoo and conditioner is half price in Superdrug 😁

Yes I have a Superdrug card too - I think they emailed me with offers yesterday so will check that out (and check they put the right price in!)

I switched to using bar shampoo and conditioner a couple of months ago. I get mine from Holland and Barrett usually with the 3 for 2 offer.

My hair is looking much better for it.

I have a sensitive scalp that can get itchy and the bars have made a massive difference!

Hair bhaji. Yum.

The chickpea flour paste sounds pretty gross but it actually works if you make a paste, brush it through in the shower, work it in at the roots well and wash it out properly! And chickpea brine is actually really good as it also contains natural saponins (soap type ingredients) - cleansing but not overly stripping for the hair. Leaving it nice and shiny.

Many ingredients in supermarket shampoo are not great for us humans and can make things like thinning hair worse (SLS being a main culprit). As such I have been on a mission to find alternatives and many can be found in your kitchen cupboard (rye flour is another). They are not exactly the same and have a less long lasting clean but for those who might find shampoo overly drying or struggle with thinning hair they are really good. So many natural things out there one just needs to do a bit of research. Not to mention most of the time they are much cheaper - double bonus.

I think £6-£7 a bottle would seem reasonable-if you're still living with your mum!

OneTwinklyPlumBeaker · 09/03/2025 10:34

I pay £57 per litre from a salon supplier (the same as my hairdresser uses). Pre COVID it was £30.

SwanOfThoseThings · 09/03/2025 10:38

The large bottles from TK Maxx work out cheap if you can find one you like. I have one I alternate with other shampoos to stop build up and it's been on the go for months.

Ursulla · 09/03/2025 10:42

Savers is consistently best value and doesn't depend on you having loyalty cards etc - they don't piss around with their prices as much as the supermarkets and boots/superdrug do.

If you do go to supermarket/boots/superdrug always check your receipt - prices are so volatile that very often shelf tickets don't keep up.

B&m isn't great value for the basic brands, but they can be decent for tigi.

Part of me can't quite believe I'm having to strategize shampoo buying but here we are.

ClassicalQueen · 09/03/2025 10:51

Boots have a few for £3-4 if you order online and have an advantage card.

Thank you - a few have recommended the shampoo bars.

Wow! So it's doubled in price basically. I bet hairdressers are feeling the effects of massive rises in product prices.

The pro:voke intensive brightening shampoo that a pp showed is 2.99 right now is honestly so much better at brightening than all the others unless you're spending a serious amount of money on a salon brand. So, yes, everything is way more expensive now, but you're also wasting money needlessly on expensive brands when the best purple shampoo is still available pretty cheaply. And you only need to use it every 2-3 washes.

Seems reasonable to me. I pay about £7 for a bottle of t-gel shampoo and it lasts me about a month.

Home bargains etc do a cheaper version of t-gel for £1.99. I use it every 3 months or so when my scalp is playing up. Its the same as t-gel (as i used to use that).

MarchingintoSpring · 16/03/2025 09:55

I thought alot of hairdressers ditched purple shampoo and stopped recommending it. Maybe having a toner would be better for you.

I thought purple shampoos were toners?

You can get massive bottles (750ml) of Bed Head shampoo and conditioner for around £7 each in Home Bargains. They last my partner and I months!

They retail at £31.50 for a twin pack (containing one shampoo and one conditioner) in other places.

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/05/2025 16:12

I think £6 is not expensive. That's not much more than a big latte at Starbucks and that's a one off thing. Shampoo lasts weeks.

A latte is nearly £6?! 😲 amazed any coffee shops are still in business

Fifthtimelucky · 13/05/2025 17:09

I buy shampoo bars from Lush. I’ve just checked the price on their website because it’s so long ago that bought one. It’s £10 but it lasts well over a year and I wash my hair 4-5 times a week.

Thesleepykettle · 13/05/2025 20:10

I bought this and like it, hand made soap bar from Amazon

Ds uses Simple shampoo from Home Bargains. An unbeatable price of £1.25!

Foolsgold74 · 16/05/2025 07:43

Fanola purple shampoo. Really strong stuff and smells awful but by far the best purple shampoo out there. At £12 for 1000ml, it's also the cheapest by miles and will last forever.
